The family of my Great-Great-Grandmother Annora Josephine Wooton is a bit of a mystery.

Annora was born 21 November 1846 in England. Her mother Ann Bailey (b. 1822) had married her father Joseph Wooton in 1842 in Staffordshire, England. Annora came to America as an infant with her parents.

Annora married John William Noble (b. 1 April 1838 in New Jersey) whose father John Noble was born in Ireland and mother Hannah Beatty was born in New Jersey.

Ann, 26, and Annora(h) Wooton, infant, arrived in New Orleans on the Sailor Prince, 20 November 1848. Also on the ship were Joseph Wooten, 26, and Ann Noble, 64. Coincidence? Ann and Annorah are listed as Family # 120376; Joseph # 120353; Ann Noble #120354.

Joseph Wooton, wife Ann and daughter Annora J. are listed on the 1850 census in St. Louis, Missouri.

In 1890-91, widow Ann Wooton lived in Camden, New Jersey with several adult children. These siblings of Annora are named in her obituary in 1929. (Sarah, James & Mrs. Harry [Margaret] Dilkes).
There is a Jno. Noble on the 1830 census for Trenton, New Jersey. A woman 20-30 yrs. is in his household who could be Hannah Beatty Noble.

Hannah Noble is listed on the 1840, -50, -60, and -70 censuses for Trenton. John W. is not listed on any of the censuses. In Hannah's 1840 household there was a male under 5 that might be John. During the Civil War John served in a Missouri Union Calvary unit. Perhaps he had emigrated West? and returned to NJ after the War?

As yet, I have not been able to locate John Noble on the 1850, -60, or -70 censuses.

9-13-2002 Update: Joseph Wooton and family have now been located in South Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey on the 1860, -70, -and -80 censuses. On the 1860, a daughter, Mary-9, is listed as born in St. Louis while a son, James-5, is listed as born in New York. The youngest child, Sarah-1, is listed as born in New Jersey. Three additional children are listed on the 1870 census--Louisa, Enoch and Margaret. In 1880, the three eldest children are no longer in the household. Annora is located in Trenton with her husband and three children.

Next door to Joseph Wooton on the 1870 census is Levi Wooton and 8 households earlier on the census is William Wooton. These brothers are from Burslem, Staffordshire, England and on the 1880 census both reside in Trenton each one block on either side of John William and Annora Josephine Wooton Noble. An English Wooton researcher lists a brother Joseph with wife Ann for Levi and William. I believe this is my ancestor, however, my England based cousin insists that Joseph died in 1854 and is buried in England. I think that the Joseph buried in England is a different Joseph and without more information lack the ability to disprove the claim. At the very least, my Joseph is a cousin.

Note that the Burslem Wootons were potters. Joseph is listed on the 1860 and -70 censuses as a potter and on the 1880 as an earthenware manufacturer. All his children, other than the youngest Margaret, are listed as potters, in the "potter's trade" or as "artists in pottery." John William Noble is listed as a moulder and his (likely) brother Charles as a potter on the 1880 census and 1881 Trenton City Directory.
