Major is said to have killed a man in Wheeling, West Virginia. Major was working in the coal mines and on payday, when a man tried to rob him, Major shot him with a gun he always carried. Major abandoned a wife and two sons and fled (on foot) to Carter County, Tennesee, where he wed my grandmother and fathered 8 kids.
Another version of the story has Major working as a guard for White Oak Mills in Greensboro, Guilford County, North Carolina. Major fled after shooting a striking worker (who survived). It is possible that both, either or neither story is true.
On the 1910 Federal Census, Major is listed as a convict (23 and married) in the Rockingham County, North Carolina Convict Camp.
Major died in 1942. The two possible sons of his first marriage have not been located. His 1st wife, Martha Cromer (m. 1907), has not been located on any censuses.
Family tradition has it that my Uncle George changed the spelling of our surname when he joined the military. George also is said to have lied about his age when he joined. He served in Korea and was wounded in combat.
"Coefer" is the spelling on my father's birth certificate. The certificate has a notation that it was amended in 1948. My grandmother signed her name as "Martha Coefer" in 1948 on my father's 4th grade report card. On that card, the school spelt my father's name as "Coffer." His 6th grade card had his name written "Cofer;" his 7th had "Coeffer;" a certificate from Vacation Bible School had "Copher."
My father was the youngest of the siblings and was the first to be born in a hospital.
