History of Frenchtown by Clarence B. Fargo, 1933.

Jacob was the son of David Manners and Mahalah Ann Sheppard. In 1894, at the age of 48, he married Myra Rapp, aged 20. He is buried in Frenchtown Cemetery with wife and daughter, and brothers Charles, Zephaniah, and John and their families.

Jacob was not the first Mayor in the family. His Great Uncle
David Stout Manners was Mayor of Jersey City from 1852-56. Both Jacob and David were the longest serving Mayors, at the time, of their respective communities. While David oversaw the installation of a public water system in Jersey City, Jacob oversaw the installation of electricity in Frenchtown.

Jacob and his brother Charles were not the first Manners to run a general store. Their Cousin
Peter Van Dyke Manners (1838-86) ran a general store in Wertsville for many years. Peter's account ledgers have been donated to the Hunterdon County Historical Society and are a significant source of local genealogical data.

Jacob was the first dentist in the family. (Unless
Dr. John Manners, 1786-1853, pulled teeth as part of his medical practice). He is believed to have originally practiced in Trenton. He is listed as a resident in the 1881 Trenton City Directory.
