On Paula's birthday we swam with dusky dolphins in the morning and watched sperm whales in the afternoon.   A good day.

The ocean drops thousands of metres just a few hundred metres off shore from Kairkoura (East coast of the South island). Cold & warm currents meet creating an upwelling that carries nutrients to the surface. These provide the basis for the vibrant ecosystem in Kaikoura's waters with huge dolphin schools and a resident population of teenage male sperm whales. Other types of dolphins, seals, sharks and whales are regularly seen.

Spray from the blowhole as the whale recharges its lungs for another 45 minute dive to 2000m in search of giant squid. The sperm whale raises its tail fluke before its dive (below) as it puts its body vertical for a fast descent
The blowhole slit is visible at the front
