Deborah Bull introduces the special celebration of ballet on BBC 2 on Christmas Day, featuring also Peter Wright's magnificent production of Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker" and Nureyev's acclaimed production of "Don Quixote". In the afternoon on Channel 4 choreographer Matthew Bourne looks at the history of male dance from Nijinsky to Adam Cooper. The programme explores the influences of some very diverse performers, such as Fred Astaire, Rudolf Nureyev and Olympic ice skater Robin Cousins.

Succès dus à la légende populaire qu'imagina Victor Hugo à vingt-neuf ans, récit d'amour et de mort.
On verra encore ce ballet à Milan en Mars.

"He’s the swan that flew the nest, but Adam Cooper is starring again at the Royal Ballet. Cooper leapt over the ROH walls to a wider West End audience with Adventures in Motion Pictures’ male Swan Lake. Since when, this prodigal son has leapt gracefully back inside again. So here he is with the Royal Ballet where he first started, learning the title part of Onegin (a company premiere). Cooper is dancing opposite Tamara Rojo on Thursday." (Nadine Meisner)

Tomorrow the Royal Ballet’s new season opens with Rudolf Nureyev’s joyous action-packed version of Don Quixote.
Created in 1966, this delightful production - never before danced by the RB - tells the story of Kitri, the adventurous peasant girl who runs off to a gypsy encampment with her sweetheart, the local
barber Basilio, rather than follow her father’s wish that she marry the outrageous, ludicrously silly fop Gamache. After romantic and comedy complications, including a splendid sword-fight, tilting at a windmill and a moonlit pas de deux, the chivalrous Don Quixote resourcefully ensures a happy ending.

23 years ago on October 17th French dance maestro Roland Petit presented in Paris a dance version of the Tchaikovsky opera "The Queen of Spades", based on a story by Alexander Pushkin, with Mikhail Baryshnikov dancing the complex character of Hermann.
Next week a new version is to be presented at Moscow's world-famous Bolshoi Theatre.
Baryshnikov being no longer available, Petit said he was confident of finding a comparable dancer to replace him. 
The ballet would have to be re-choreographed because the 1978 version was never recorded, he said.

Cranko's "Romeo and Juliet" was premiered by La Scala ballet company in Venice in 1958.
After a couple of performances in Wien, Simona Noja will dance Cranko's Juliet tomorrow in Rome, partnered by Gregor Hatala.

With two stage appearances as Romeo, Vladimir Malakhov celebrated his jubilee of being ten years at Vienna. On October 4th 1991, the dancer appeared for the first time at Vienna - not at the State Opera House, but at the Wiener Stadthalle where he performed Swan Lake with the Moscow Classical Ballet.
At the Vienna State Opera he performed since then more than 21 roles and choreographed two ballets.

13 of the world's foremost ballet dancers meet up in Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen for a grand Ballet Gala on Saturday and Sunday.
Johan Kobborg, principal dancer of the Royal Ballet, is the artistic director of the Gala, which marks the end of Tivoli Gardens summer season.

On Thursday the 13th the 3rd Terpsichore Gala opens the Autumn season at the Prinzregententheater in Munich.
Beside the Staatsballett Igor Zelenski will dance in Scheherazade with Svetlana Sacharowa, Aurelie Dupont and Manuel Legris from POB, the young star Rasta Thomas from New York, Steffi Arndt and Toni Rizzi from Ballett Frankfurt and others.

Cranko's "Onegin" will return tomorrow at the Finnish National Opera.
In addition to the wistfully beautiful pas de deux scenes by Onegin and young Tatyana, who is in love with him, the ballet contains impressive ensemble scenes.
The Royal Ballet will dance Cranko’s ballet for the first time at the end of November.

23 years ago first performance of the ballet »Zorba il Greco«, in the Arena of Verona. Choreography by Lorca Massine, Mikis Theodorakis conducting: the ballet is a tremendous success. Since the premiere, it has been performed more than six hundred times all over the world.
One month ago the title role was danced by Irek Mukhamedov at the Lithuanian summer season at the Trakai Castle.

The Royal Ballet returns to Covent Garden for two weeks as part of the grand-slam summer season. This season's stars include for the first time in history three Italian male dancers: Giuseppe Picone, Roberto Bolle and Massimo Murru.

On Friday the POB will perform "Clavigo" at the Baalbeck International Festival.
This ballet to the choreography of Roland Petit is inspired by an early play Goethe wrote. It recounts the story of a lover who favors the pursuit of his career ambitions over the call of his heart.
The original music is composed by Gabriel Yared, Lebanese Oscar-winner for  the music of the movie ’An English Patient’ as well as many other awards.

Set on a stage prettily surrounded by crinkled silver foil, "Jaleos" showcase Victor Ullate's full 20-member company. The sleekly dressed, attractive men and women burst with creative energy to breathy Spanish vocals and percussion by Luis Delgado in this decidedly heated affair.
This ballet will be danced at the Carcassonne festival on Friday the 13th.

The Wiener Staatsoper will close its ballet season with a Farewell Gala next Thursday.
Among the guest dancers there will be the couple Kraemer-Tewsley from Stuttgart, the couple Loudières-Legris from Paris, Margaret Illmann from Berlin, Giuseppe Picone and Roberto Bolle from Italy.

In its first appearance at the Kennedy Center since 1995, the company will dance works by its founder-choreographer, Sir Frederick Ashton, including the full-lenght ballet "La fille mal gardée".

Irek Mukhamedov is the choreographer of a new production of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. The premiere is planned for 25 May at the Grand Theatre in Warsaw.
Stage design is by Pawel Walicki, costumes by Irena Bieganska, and the conductor is Andrzej Straszynski.

"Afternoon of a faun", choreographed by Jerome Robbins, was first performed 48 years ago by the NYCB. This pdd set in a ballet studio is dedicated to Tanaquil Le Clercq, for whom the ballet was choreographed.
It will be danced by POB next December.

Il fait appel à François Roy pour la partition musicale et à Ruben Altério pour les décors et costumes.
L’argument lui est venu d’un livre d’un auteur japonais, Prix Nobel de littérature, qu’il a lu il y a dix ans et qui lui "trottait dans la tête".

Neumeier composed a rendition of Midsummer Night's Dream that has the fantasy, wit, slapstick, romance, and grandeur of the original and, perhaps most impressively, he concocted physical and visual jokes that serve as the equivalent of Shakespeare's play with words. The ballet premiered in Paris 19 years ago on the 5th of May and will be seen again next June.

55 years ago on the 24th of April Frederik Ashton's "Symphonic Variations" to the music of César Franck had its première at Covent Garden with Margot Fonteyn, Pamela May, Moira Shearer, Michael Somes, Henry Danton and Brian Shaw.
This plotless ballet, a signature work for the RB, will be presented in Washington in June.

Onegin will be given its Company Premiere by ABT on June 1, 2001, danced by Julie Kent (Tatiana), Robert Hill (Onegin), Vladimir Malakhov (Lensky).

51 years ago on the 8th of April Vaslav Nijinsky died in London. He created for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes the ballets L'Après-midi d'un faune, Jeux, and Le Sacre du printemps. Till Eulenspiegel was produced in the United States without Diaghilev's personal supervision.
Adam Cooper is now dancing Jeux in Rome.

La caméra de Nils Tavernier a suivi les danseurs de l'Opéra National de Paris pendant plus de trois mois dans les coulisses du Palais Garnier et de l'Opéra Bastille et lors de la tournée du ballet au Japon.

"The Nutcracker" set to open tonight at St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Theater promises to be a stark contrast to the more traditional staging of the Tchaikovsky classic. 
There won't be any of the notoriously sugary feel. This will be a Hoffmannesque production and Valery Gergiev will introduce an additional challenge to the dancers by restoring the original fast tempo Tchaikovsky had intended.
