The Alleluia Ringers of Concordia University Wisconsin

Our Song

Thank you friends for your kind thoughtfulness.
Meeting you has brought us happiness.
It [will be/has been] a joy to bring
You these songs we love to ring . . .
And as we go, well take our memories
Of good friends and hospitality.
May Gods grace with you abide,
Till we meet again.

One of the traditions of the Alleluia Ringers has been to sing this song during tours as a thank you for the meals that hosts prepare for us before our concerts.  In order to be a member of the Alleluia Ringers, you must have this song memorized.  Not to worry, though, because there is usually plenty of encouragement from the other ringers to learn your part.  What few members of the Alleluia Ringers know is the origin of the melody to this song.  It was first written in 1918, lyrics by R. B. Egan and the music by R. A. Whiting.  The song's original title was "Till We Meet Again."  It has been featured in movies such as "On Moonlight Bay" in 1951, staring Rosemary DeCamp, Doris Day, Gordon MacRae, Leon Ames, and Billy Gray.  The original lyrics of the song are as follows:

There's a song in the land of the lily,
Each sweetheart has heard with a sigh.
Over high garden walls this sweet echo falls
As a soldier boy whispers goodbye:

Smile the while you kiss me sad adieu
When the clouds roll by I'll come to you.
Then the skies will seem more blue,
Down in Lover's Lane, my dearie.

Wedding bells will ring so merrily
Ev'ry tear will be a memory.
So wait and pray each night for me
Till we meet again.

Tho' goodbye means the birth of a tear drop,
Hello means the birth of a smile.
And the smile will erase the tear blighting trace,
When we meet in the after awhile.

Smile the while you kiss me sad adieu
When the clouds roll by I'll come to you
Then the skies will seem more blue
Down in Lover's Lane, my dearie,

Wedding bells will ring so merrily
Ev'ry tear will be a memory
So wait and pray each night for me
Till we meet again.
