Although the shell looks OK in these pictures, when you walk up to it you can see that the paint is a flaky powder clinging to bumpy fiberglass. I think it was originally what they call a "gel coat" paint job. I also didn't want white shell with the red paint on the truck. Black has a more rugged look. After doing some research on the internet, I decided to use Rustolium Professional paint and apply it with a roller. Stop laughing. DIY bed liners are rolled on as well as the paint on large boats. It's not like I'm painting the truck (a smooth surface) with a roller. The shell has a textured surface. I didn't notice that the only black store had was glossy paint. Even then, I didn't think it would matter. It did. |

| After sanding with 60, 150, and finally 220 grit sand paper on an orbital sander, I rolled on the paint. The glossy paint looked weird. The texture of the shell all glossed up freaked-out my eyes. I went back to the store to get some flat black in the regular Rustolium. After adding the second coat of flat black, the shell looked exactly as I imagined it would. Then that weekend I put the shell back on the truck.... |
