The truck has not been painted since it's conversion to a Custom Cab in 1985. The last 21 years have been fairly uneventful, in terms of body damage, for a truck that was used off road nearly as much as on.
There is some damage at the left rear corner from a run-in with a delivery truck some years ago as well as some minor parking lot digs. The worst news is that the paint is breaking down from UV exposure. On the driver side the clear coat is nearly gone.
Though a few people have told me that they liked the "brown and gold rainbow", as I un-affectionately refer to the graphics, I would like to see this 20 year old legend "Overhauled" (like the Chip Foose TV show). Trans Ams didn't have "screaming chickens" on their hoods after the 1980s and this truck shouldn't have those old fashioned graphics either.
I had the black grill and bumpers painted the body color to update the look. The old "tow mirrors" were removed and replaced by sleek 1988 4Runner side mirrors, also painted red.
Though it can't be seen in these pictures, the bed and wheel wells were sprayed with a black undercoating. Later I'll show you the "wood and carpet" bed liner I'm building.
The rear bumper has been removed until I find a bumper I like. I love the look of the rear bumpers made by Bent Up. They are simple, small, yet heavy duty, and expensive.
Currently, there are no badges on the body. I'm looking into having some custom "Toyota Custom Cab" badges made.
