Athletics Athlete Commits Anti-Doping Rule Violation

(Ottawa, Ontario June 12, 2007) The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) announced today that Jeff Adams, an athletics athlete, committed an anti-doping rule violation. The violation occurred during an in-competition doping control conducted on May 28, at the 2006 Canadian Wheelchair Marathon Championships held as part of the ING Ottawa Marathon.

Mr. Adams anti-doping rule violation was a result of his urine sample returning an adverse analytical finding for cocaine metabolite, a prohibited substance on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List.

In response to the CCES notification of the adverse analytical finding, Mr. Adams exercised his right under the rules of the Canadian Anti-Doping Program to a hearing before an independent arbitrator for a final determination. The independent arbitrator determined that Mr. Adams adverse analytical finding constitutes an anti-doping rule violation, and imposed a sanction of two years sport ineligibility and permanent ineligibility for federal sport funding. A copy of the independent arbitrators decision is available on the website of the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada (www.adrsportred.ca).

The CCES is an independent, national, non-profit organization. Our mission, to foster ethical sport for all Canadians, is carried out through research, promotion, education, detection and deterrence, as well as through programs and partnerships with other organizations.
