Chanelle Charron-Watson top Canadian at European swimming competition

CANET, France � Chanelle Charron-Watson of Quebec City posted Canada�s best performance on Sunday at the opening stop on the Mare Nostrum swimming tour with a fifth place finish in the women�s 800-metre freestyle.

Sophie Huber of France won the gold medal in eight minutes and 35.35 seconds.  Linda MacKenzie of Australia was second in 8:40.72 and Arantxa Ramos of Spain took the bronze in 8:49.54.  Charron-Watson, who trains at Universit� Laval, was fifth in 8:52.40.  Her clubmate M�lanie Bouchard of Quebec City was 14th overall.

Other Canadian finalists were Matt Rose and Rick Say, both of Victoria, who placed seventh in the 100 freestyle and 400 freestyle respectively.

Stephanie Horner of Beaconsfield, Que., won the B final in the women�s 200 butterfly in 2:15.27 for ninth overall.  The time would have ranked her seventh in the final.

Other Canadians in the B final were Mathieu Bois and Genevi�ve Saumur, both of Montreal, 11th overall in the men�s 200 breaststroke and women�s 50 butterfly respectively, Victoria Poon of Montreal 13th in the 50 butterfly and Tobias Oriwol of Montreal 15th in the 100 backstroke.

Competition ends Sunday.
