Canadians Kelly MacDonald and Meaghan Benfeito reach final at diving Grand Prix

MOSCOW- Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal and Kelly MacDonald of Edmonton qualified for this weekends finals on Friday at the fourth stop on the FINA Grand Prix diving circuit.

On womens 10-metre tower, Benfeito produced one of her best international performances in the event placing fifth in the preliminaries and second in one of two semifinals.  Wang Hao of China is the leader heading into Saturdays final.

Meaghans been managing her meet really well here, said Canadian national team coach Trevor Palmatier.  Shes our super girl here competing in four events and shes been making sure that shes well rested and well prepared.

On womens three-metre, MacDonald appears en route for another strong internaitonal performance this season.  She was eighth in the preliminaries and snared a berth in the final placing third in her semi.  Benfeito was seventh in prelims and just missed the cut for the final placing fourth in her semi.

Kellys been amazing, its just her backwards two and half dive thats giving her some trouble, said Palmatier.  She missed it in both the prelims and semis.  If she can nail it in the final she can be a medal threat for sure.  Shess under-rotating on it a bit and shes been practicing hard to fix that.

On mens three-metre, Eric Sehn of Edmonton was fifth in his semifinal heat and eliminated while David Ovelson of Edmonton was eliminated in the prelims.

On mens 10-metre, Kevin Geyson of Winnipeg was fifth in his semifinal and eliminated.

In the womens three-metre synchro final, Benfeito and Jennifer Abel of Montreal were fifth out of five.

Competition continues through to Sunday.
