Van Koeverden earns fifth World Cup gold, Oldershaw adds silver at paddling World Cup

GERARDMER, France � Olympic champion Adam Van Koeverden of Oakville, Ont., earned his fifth gold medal this season on the World Cup canoe and kayak circuit with a victory in the men�s kayak singles (K-1) 1,000 � metres.

Mark Oldershaw of Burlington, Ont., also continued to shine on the circuit with his fourth medal this season.

Van Koeverden led at every split and clocked three minutes and 34.110 for the victory.  His arch-rival Ben Fouhy of New Zealand was second at 3:34.580 and Eirik Larsen of Norway third at 3:35.985.  Both Fouhy and Larsen needed great finishes to get into the medals.

Oldershaw added a silver in the men�s canoe singles (C-1) 1,000 for his fourth podium appearance this season.  Multiple world and Olympic champion Andreas Dittmer of Germany won the gold in 4:01.647 while Oldershaw followed in 4:02.682.  Erik Leue of Germany was third in 4:07.365.

Oldershaw was first after 250 metres, third at the halfway point and second at 750 metres.

Competition continues Saturday.
