Marítimo have been paired up with Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers, in the first round of this seasons UEFA Cup. The first leg, played on Thursday 16 September, will be played at the Estádio dos Barreiros, while Marítimo visit the 50,000 capacity Ibrox Stadium two weeks later on the 30 September.

This will be Marítimo's fifth European campaign, and the third visit to the United Kingdom in six years. Marítimo first entered the European scene in 1993, but fell at the first round losing to the Belgian team Royal Antwerp 4-2 on aggregate. The following season was to be the verde-rubros most succesful UEFA Cup campaign. After beating Swiss team FC Aarau 1-0 on

aggregate, Marítimo advanced to the second round and were unlucky to lose to Italian giants Juventus, after a 3-1 aggregate score.

In 1998, Marítimo came close to reaching the second round again, but were knocked out after a thrilling penalty shoot-out to English club Leeds United, after a 1-1 aggregate score. Three years later and another trie against Leeds. After Marítimo shocked the English club with a 1-0 win in Funchal, thanks to a 35 yard Bruno free-kick, the whites struck back with a 3-0 win at Elland Road.

Marítimo face equally strong opposition this season, as they face a traditional giant of British football. Competing in the Scottish Premier League, where our very own Mitchell Van der Gaag played for Motherwell, the 'Gers' finished in second place, 17 points behind rivals Glasgow Celtic, and 13 points in front of Hearts, who will play Sporting Braga in the first round. Having already played four games of this season, including one against rivals Celtic (Losing 1-0), Rangers lie in third place behind Celtic and Aberdeen.

It will be a very challenging tie for the verde-rubros, but one that is not impossible to win.
