Having been one of the less notable signings for Marítimo this summer Manduca, who was expected to be a back-up player, has quickly adapted and forced his way into the verde-rubros first team.

In his first three competitive games for the club, the left winger has impressed not only the management but also the fans. He was the only real performer in Marítimo’s disastrous opening day defeat (3-0) away to Belenenses, and had an excellent game against Penafiel.

His crowning moment though was in Marítimo’s UEFA Cup first round match against Glasgow Rangers. Usually a left winger, Manduca was played up front as Marítimo’s only striker, in place of the ineligible Bibishkov. He repaid Mariano Barreto’s faith in him with the only goal of the game, a goal which puts the verde-rubros in the driving seat for the second

leg game two weeks from now.

“Obviously I am very happy, but it would be ungrateful on my part not to thank Manuel Cajuda. It was he that brought me to Marítimo.”

“This manager (Mariano Barreto) is also excellent in motivating the team, and assimilating new ideas with innovative methods of training. He has been very good” said Manduca.

The Brazilian, who was misinterpreted as an Italian in the British press, also commented on his place in the Marítimo first team: “For me, the important thing is to play. If the coach (Barreto) believes I can play as a goalkeeper, then I will also believe. Everything is a question of work. The difference in football today is in the psychological aspects. If you believe that everything is possible, then things become easier” claimed Manduca.
