New Marítimo manager Mariano Barreto reckons Rangers' reputation' will count for nothing in Madeira this evening. Barreto admits there is no comparison in terms of stature but he feels the verde-rubros can match the Glasgow giants for ability.

Barreto takes charge of only his second match this evening after quitting his role with the Ghana national team and he is anxious to preserve his 100 per cent record. However, Marítimo will go into tonight's UEFA Cup clash without Brazilian striker Pena and Bulgarian hitman Krum Bibishkov, who scored on his debut at the weekend, after the club failed to register them in time.

Barreto said: "In terms of prestige we can't compete with Rangers. They are a huge club and they have a

lot more European experience than us. However, in terms of playing ability we are equal.'Rangers have the advantage because they have played five games in their league and maybe they have a better rhythm. We will have to wait and see."

Central midfielder Chaínho, who had spells with Porto and Panathinaikos, said: "I knew quite a bit about Rangers when I played around Europe, and we will need to be at our best to beat them. I know of Shota Arveladze, Dado Prso and Nacho Novo. All of those guys can score goals and they are the ones we will have to watch out for. They can be very dangerous."

Chaínho added: "I love these matches and I think everyone feels they are what football is all about."
