Alex McLeish could be plunged deeper into trouble tonight - by a player he helped turn into a star.
Marítimo defender Mitchell van der Gaag played under McLeish when the Rangers boss was in charge of Motherwell.

Van der Gaag admitted McLeish was a major influence in his career but is determined to make life hell for him tomorrow in Madeira. He said: "Alex taught me a lot as a defender while I was at Motherwell in the mid-nineties and I'm very grateful to him for that."

"He passed on many pieces of advice that I have never forgotten and that has helped me throughout my career. He was an excellent manager to play under so I am looking forward to seeing him again in Portugal."

"Rangers will be favourites to beat us. I also know they will want to do extra well in the UEFA Cup because

they are not in the Champions League. They must have been very disappointed to have gone out to CSKA Moscow and I hope they don't take it out on us. "

"But we are confident and played well in our last Portuguese league game against Penafiel. So I think we can do well in the home tie. It is a difficult draw for us but we will give Rangers a tough test, I know that."
