. Full Name : Rahul Sharad Dravid Style : Right hand top order batsman Occasional Right-arm Off Spin bowler Teams : India, Karnataka, Kent Highest ODI Score : 153 vs New Zealand Highest Test Score : 190 vs New Zealand Career Highlights : Sparkling ninety-five on test debut at Lord's (1996) |
| When Rahul Dravid first
made his entry onto the international scene he was very much a part of
the Karnataka boom that had invaded Indian cricket. Kumble, Srinath and
Prasad were already known names, Ganesh, Joshi and Johnson were looking
to make their mark and then there was Dravid, the lone batsman from the
Karnataka brigade.
From the outset itself, the lad seemed to be in a class of his own. He boasted of a technique few in world cricket could dream of, and plus he seemed to have all the shots in the book. He showed us that he had the ability to translate all this promise into big scores on his debut itself, when he made a majestic 95 against England at Lords in 1996. He has consistently followed up that dream debut with invaluable test match efforts, the high points being a glorious 148 against the deadly South African bowlers in their own backyard, and a magical 190 versus the Kiwis in Kiwiland. What sets Rahul apart is that he has managed to score heavily in |
unfavourable and unfamiliar
conditions, with five out of the six centuries he has hit, coming on foreign
soil.
.Dravid has, however, struggled from time to time in the limited overs game. Not being a natural boundary hitter has proved to be a disadvantage and his scoring rate has often been well below par. But to his credit, Dravid has worked on this grey area and of late has been notching up useful scores in one day cricket, making him an important asset to the Indian side. Dravid is also a complete team man, willingly taking up any assignment handed to him be it opening the batting in Test matches or keeping wickets in crises or relinquishing his favourite number three position to the in form VVS Laxman. He is presently vice captain, and with skipper Ganguly and Sachin forms the think tank of the Indian cricket team.. |
