About Fishertown

The following image was scanned from a 1951 Alabama Historical Quarterly. History shows that a Town, Village, or Settlement was named after the family who lived there. The Fishers, Joshia and George, settled here long before the Suggs family moved to the area. In the letter from James A. Ramsey, for Simeon S. Strickland, to the Commisioner of Indian Affairs 15 Sept. 1906, says that Jane (Jennie) Hale came to Mississippi from Fishertown, Alabama. It has been reported that Fishertown was the same as the Fish Ponds. I am disturbed about this assumption, because during this time period the Hale families did not live anywhere near the Fish Pond village. There appears to be no Genealogy line established for SEMAHOWAY, wife of Joshia Fisher. Also, there has been no Indian names connected to any of Hannah Hales children. It is highly probable that Semahoway is a daughter of Hannah Hale.
