This Time Around

“Pour some sugar on ME!”

Elijah stared at the phone in confusion. “Hello?” He said again, his forehead creased.

“IN THE NAME OF LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE!” Came the high-pitched horrifically bad singing reply.

Elijah set his drink down and started to the living room, looking for his cigarettes. “Hi, Dom,” he said offhandedly.

“Hello Elijah. Your cigarettes are on the coffee table.”

Elijah stopped walking. “On your coffee table?”

Dom sighed. “No, on YOUR coffee table.”

Glancing to the coffee table, Elijah was surprised and delighted to see the packet sitting there just waiting to be found. “How did you know that?” Elijah questioned, pulling a cigarette out of the pack and sticking it in his mouth. “Better yet,” he said through the cigarette, “How’d you know I was looking for them?”

“Ahhhh you forget,” Dom said in a knowledgeable voice. “I know all.”

There was a slight giggle and then the sound of a toe hitting the leg of the table and then a curse as a cigarette tumbled to the ground.

“Watch your step,” Dom said brightly.

“Thanks,” Elijah grumbled, bending to pick up the lost cigarette; he slid the packet into the pocket of his jeans for safe keeping. He cursed again, and shuffled back to the kitchen.

“Your lighter is probably in your jacket pocket.”

“Thank you,” Elijah said, heading toward the jacket he wore the night before; he fumbled around in all the pockets until he found what he was looking for. “Ah ha,” he said in triumph. “Fantastic.”

“So, other than swearing, what are you doing?”

“Smoking.”

“Ah, yes, of course.”

“Did you call only to find my cigarettes and lighter or was there another reason?”

There was silence for a moment and then Dom laughed. “I just called…to say…I love you.”

“You could speak in song lyrics for days on end, couldn’t you.”

“Bye bye bye.”

“Oh, God,” Elijah groaned. “Do NOT sing *NSYNC or I will never speak to you again.”

“I was actually just saying bye because my ride is here.”

“Oh.” Elijah took a drag from his cigarette. “Well, thanks for your help.”

“Thanks for keeping me entertained while I waited.” There was another pause, and Elijah could hear the jingling of keys, probably as Dom gathered up his things. “I won’t wait another minute. I’m on my way this time around!”

“Dominic, are you singing Hanson?”

“Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe.” They laughed and then there was the sound of a creaking door. “Bye Lighe.”

“Until you’re back here baby!”

“God, are you singing BBMak?”

“Yes, I think so.”

“Get some sleep.”

“Get laid.”

“I always do, Lighe. I always do."
