Spinning Into Sweet Uncertainty

Hannah straightened out her black lace top that was cut diagonally on her mid-drift and pulled her blue and purple flannel-looking short skirt down as far as it would go…not far. This ensemble was chosen by Samantha, who informed Hannah that she needed to live a little and show some skin before she left the wonderful city of LA. Hannah was doubtful, she wasn’t a big fan of scantily clad women; lest of all herself as one of them.
Samantha emerged from the bathroom in a cloud of fog; her hair was piled atop her head in masses of perfect curls, her makeup was done to perfection and she was wearing strappy sandals, a light pink tank top (also cut diagonally across the mid-drift) and a little black skirt with a slit up each side.
“Ready?” Samantha asked, flashing the tickets like they were made of gold.
“Yeah. Sure.” Hannah shrugged and followed her friend from the apartment.
Hannah slouched into the car and leaned way back in an attempt to relax herself. She was sad about leaving and she really was not in the mood for a concert. Especially a concert with an overly energetic Samantha would was spewing off Jimmy Eat World facts at five second intervals.
“Huh…yeah…eh…hmmm…wow…yeah…whoa…interesting…yes…yeah…no…maybe…yes, I am listening, Sam.”
“I saw Jake in Donnie Darko last night. I pulled it out of your packed bag and watched it after you went to bed.”
“Huh,” replied Hannah sleepily.
“Yeah. And he looked hot, but he freaked me out with his weirdness. Don’t you think he’s weird, Han?”
“Yeah, sure,” was the stoic reply.
“But he looks hot, ya know?”
Hannah nodded groggily, “Eh.”
“Hannah!” Samantha shouted, “You’re not listening to me AT ALL!”
Hannah sat up in the seat, rubbing her eyes but not enough to make much of a mess of her makeup. “I’m sorry, Sam. I have a lot on my mind.”
“Did you hear what I said about Jake?”
“Jake? What?” Hannah asked, now full on attention-wise.
“I said I watched Donnie Darko and he looked hot, but he freaked me out. Then you said you didn’t think he was hot.”
“I never said that,” argued Hannah.
“Then join the world of the living and be the other half of this debate. It’s hard to debate by yourself.”
Hannah laughed lightheartedly, “Yeah. Sorry.”
“So…do you think he’s hot?” Samantha asked slyly.
“Yeah, I’ve always thought that. You know I’ve always had a crush on him.”
“Mmmmm,” Samantha said, turning a corner, “Why didn’t you ever tell him?”
“Well, obviously I was scared.”
“Right.”
Hannah shrugged her shoulders and sighed heavily, “Anyway.”
“Change of subject. Jimmy Eat World. Go.”
“I don’t know anything about them. Except I liked Bleed American better than Clarity because there were more fast paced songs on Bleed American. But Clarity had ‘For Me This Is Heaven‘…”
Samantha shook her head, “Hannah.”
Hannah turned in her seat to face her friend with an eyebrow poised.
“You should call him when you get home. Make some time to meet him or something. Maybe he still lives there.”
“He doesn’t, he moved to LA.”
“He moved to LA and you haven’t contacted him?! Hannah! We freaking LIVE here! You could have caught up months ago.”
Hannah shrugged sadly, “I know. Sam…I don’t want to see him. It’ll be weird.”
“So? All good relationships have weird points, you just have to work through them.”
Hannah raised an eyebrow, “Maybe.”
“Promise me you’ll call him the second you land.”
“Yeah. Alright.” Hannah said half-heartedly.
“Hannah,” came Samantha’s warning voice.
“I promise, Samantha. Geez, you’re acting like my mom. She calls me and wants me to call Jake…she knows how much it hurt me when we stopped talking.”
Samantha gave Hannah an ‘I told you so’ look before turning into a very full parking lot.
“Oh good Lord, Sam. I don’t know if I’m up for all these people,” muttered Hannah as she slowly unbuckled her seat belt and craned her neck around at all the teenagers milling about.
“Buck up, Hannah. This is a concert. It’s supposed to be fun.”
Hannah looked at her doubtfully, “Can I go home? I’ve got tons of packing to do.”
“Hannah Victoria Mason! You are staying put. This is for your own good, okay? Now get out and at least pretend to enjoy yourself.” Samantha unbuckled and threw herself from the tiny car in frustration. She locked the doors manually after Hannah had slowly gotten out.
