Across the Universe

A long time ago, when he was young, he’d sit in his living room with his mum; he’d be laying on the floor reading, and she’d be doing something creative (painting, or writing usually) and the Beatles would be playing in the background. To this day, every time Charlie thought about the Beatles, he thought about his mother.

This was before everything went to crap. Before his father came home trashed, throwing things about and yelling at everyone for breathing too loudly. Before the band, before Liam stopped being a big brother and just became a big ass.

Before everything changed.

He watches her across the cave. She’s sitting in the dim light, the water running steadily behind her, creating a magnificently beautiful effect. She has a book in her lap and she’s humming as she writes.

Charlie clears his throat as tears prick his eyelids and he remembers. Something his mother always used to tell him when things got bad.

“All you need is love.”
