The twins are two months before their eighth birthday. The twins went to school as usual. Mommy was mad at the twins for making a mess in their closet. She just left it as the mess and the twins had to clean up on their own.
Tuesday, Jun 7, 2005 (7y+10m+1d)
The twins set the alarm clock at a quarter to 7am. They didn't have to set up so early. But they said they usually couldn't get up right after the alarm set off. They needed to let the alarm ring for a while. The twins went to school as usual. They went to piano lesson in the afternoon.
Wednesday, Jun 8, 2005 (7y+10m+2d)
The twins went to school as usual. They went to piano class in the afternoon. Mommy stayed behind to chat with Ms. Shwu after the class. They didn't come home until after 7pm. The twins requested udon noodle for dinner. That was easy to make. Mommy had dinner ready in no time.
Thursday, Jun 9, 2005 (7y+10m+3d)
The twins went to school as usual. Mommy took them to the shopping mall in the afternoon. Nordstrom had the semi-annual sale today. But they didn't find anything worth buying. They bought some lollipop rings from a candy store instead.Mommy cooked abalone as one of the dinner dishes. Grandpa got it few weeks ago on the north coast of California. He got a permit to harvest abalone as a sport. The permit allow him to catch 24 abalone per year. The twins loved to eat abalone. The one tonight was 8" in long on one side. We had another one a few weeks ago which was a quarter inch smaller. Jasmine broke the rule of eating a lollipop ring in late afternoon. As a result, she lost appetite and couldn't finish her dinner. She had many slides of abalone though.
After dinner, mommy kind of nagged about losing sleep in the past few nights because of daddy's snoring. Before bedtime, Joanne came downstairs and asked if Joanne could sleep with daddy and Jasmine would sleep with mommy. The twins talked about mommy's insomia in their room and they came up with the sleeping arrangement for the night. They were very considerate because they knew Joanne snored and she was never bothered by daddy's snoring. Daddy told them that it wouldn't help much because Jasmine would kick mommy in her sleep. Later when we went upstairs to check on them. We found Joanne asleep on the day bed in daddy's room. And Jasmine in her own bed. They had arranged in such a way that we both would have a good sleep. Their gesture and effort brought a smile on mommy and daddy's face.

The twins went to school as usual. Daddy came home a little earlier than usual to had an early dinner. Mommy went to her tennis practice. Daddy took the twins to the same park where mommy played tennis. They rode bicycle and played in the playground until dark. Mommy continued her practice until the lights in the tennis courts turned dark. She came home at around 10:30pm.
Saturday, Jun 11, 2005 (7y+10m+5d)
We went to see Star Wars Episode III. We had pasta for lunch. Mommy went tennis practice. Daddy and twins went to play tennis in local park. After a few serves, Jasmine gave up because she complained daddy served too hard because they were only kids. She rode her bicycle instead. Joanne played a little longer, but then complained the sun was too hot for her. So after less than 30 minutes of tennis, we changed venue to the playground instead. As soon as mommy was back home, we went to Deanna's home for a dinner gathering. The twins were quite occupied in Deanna's room. Christen and Vivian were among the guests. Christen was young, but she fit in quite nicely with the girls' group play. Vivian was freshman in colleage, she was kind of too old to play with the kids. All the boys play video games in the boy's room. We stayed until like 11:30pm.
The twins took the day bed in mommy's room and sent daddy to Jasmine's bed so that daddy's snoring would not bother mommy. Joanne also snored, so the difference was little.
Sunday, Jun 12, 2005 (7y+10m+6d)
We had lunch with grandma Chui. We came home and asked the twins to play piano for grandma. Mommy went to a tennis match in the afternoon. After we dropped off grandma at her home, daddy took the twins to see mommy's match. We brought the twins' bicycles along. The twins rode around the park and daddy rollerbladed behind them. Instead of watching mommy's tennis match, the twins spent most of the afternoon in the playground and the park. When we returned to check on mommy, she was already out of the game. She lost. At this time, Claire's family arrived. They also wanted to see mommy's match, but they were late and fortunately missed the embarassing loss.Daddy and twins went back to the park with Claire to play in the playground. Mommy stayed with her teammates to watch their matches. The kids played together for the rest of the afternoon. After the matches, we returned home to take a shower. We went to dinner together at around 7pm. Then we went to Golden Gate Badminton Center's grand opening. They were opened to the public free of charge for 3 days as a promotion. We took advantage of the free admission and let the kids play badminton for real. The twins played badminton in the backyard, but they'd never watched how the game was played for real. One of Hong Kong's famous singer Sally Yeh was a helper in the grand opening event. We pointed out the star to the twins, but they had no idea who she was. When half way into the game, Deanna's family also show up. The twins played badminton with Deanna while the adults played a more serious game. We played until 10:30pm. The twins fell asleep really quickly after a long day of physical activities. They would spend the whole school day in a picnic field trip tomorrow. So we didn't worry about keeping them up too later at night.
Monday, Jun 13, 2005 (7y+10m+7d)
It was a very hot day today. It was some 90 degree before 9am in the morning. The twins returned to school as usual. This was the last week of the school year. The twins would have no more homework this week. The teacher would not teach anything new either. The class went to a nearby park for a picnic today. The twins requested mommy to go with them.In the afternoon, the twins' friends came to our home to play. Ashley, Brandon, and the twins played with the garden hose in the backyard. We bought a water volcano from Costco. It provided the much needed water spray and splash for the hot afternoon. The twins said that they have changed three sets of underpants today. They got soaked in the park during the school outing and they got soaked again at home.
After a full day of physical activities, mommy sent them to bed at 9pm. Their room was still warm from the day's heat when they get in bed. Half an hour later, they yelled for help from upstairs. They said they had already stripped to just the underpants and they were not covering with the blanket, yet it was still too hot to sleep. Daddy set up a fan to blow air into their room. The twins said they remembered when they were little, they fought to move the fan at different directions to get the cooler breeze.
Tuesday, Jun 14, 2005 (7y+10m+8d)
The twins went to school as usual. They had piano lesson in the afternoon. Mommy had a tennis match in the evening. Daddy picked up the kids after work from the tennis court. We stopped for 5 minutes to watch people play volleyball in the park. Daddy took Itaka and the twins to Maruichi Ramen restaurant for dinner. After dinner, we went to the aquarium store a block away. The kids were especially interested in the sea horses, a snapping turtle and some bright color frogs. On the way home, we stopped by the aikido dojo to watch some aikidoka practiced. The twins watched the kids lesson some weekends ago. There were only adults in tonight's session. A couple of them had blackbelts. Itaka had not seen aikido before despite he is Japanese. After we came home, the kids spent an hour playing on the computer. The moms returned and Itaka left with his mom at around 10pm. All three teams lost the matches tonight.
Before bedtime, Joanne had a bad case of nose bleed while she was brushing her teeth. The bleeding didn't stop for like 5 minutes.
Wednesday, Jun 15, 2005 (7y+10m+9d)
The twins went to school as usual. They said they did a memory book as the class project today. They went to piano class in the afternoon.Daddy came home with a bandage on the elbow for blood donation in the afternoon. Jasmine asked if daddy was injured.
Thursday, Jun 16, 2005 (7y+10m+10d)
The twins went to school as usual. I didn't take note and I couldn't remember what the twins did!
Friday, Jun 17, 2005 (7y+10m+11d)
The twins went to school as usual. Today is the last day of school. The twins came off school at 11:30am. They were there basically to pick up the report card.Mommy and twins picked up daddy in mid afternoon. Daddy got off work a little early. We went to LA. It took us around 5 and half hour to arrive at Monterey Park. We had a late dinner at a restaurant before going to the cousins' home. The twins immediately played with Amanda seamlessly. Our last visit was 10 months ago. The twins still remembered their second cousins very well. The twins shared Amanda's bed. Andric slept in his parents' room when he surrendered his room to us.
Saturday, Jun 18, 2005 (7y+10m+12d)
Mommy complained that daddy's snoring kept her up all night. We left the cousins' home in the late morning and drove south to Irvine, CA. It was frustrating that highway I-5 was jammed with stop-n-go traffic in mid day Saturday. We seldem have traffic jam on weekends in most of the Bay Area. We arrived at Kathy's home before 1pm. Kathy and her sons took us to lunch at a Japanese Ramen place. It was a small place but with a long line. While we were waiting, the twins played happily with Derek. Derek was a college freshman this year but he still played chase-n-tag with the twins. The twins liked to poke him on his back. The twins didn't mix well with Raymond because he was a little older. I guessed the real reason was that Raymond was not home last year when we visited them. So the twins felt more close to Derek because they played with him 10 months ago. We waited outside the restaurant for almost a hour to get in. Ramen is one of the twins' favorite food, so they were very satisfied. After lunch, we went to a tea-shop to enjoy some afternoon tea. When we returned to our host's home, the twins jumped on Derek's computer to play games. Daddy lied on a Lazy-boy and fell asleep within minutes. The twins said they heard daddy's snoring from upstairs.
Daddy woke up after about half an hour nap. We went to Raymond's graduation commencement ceremony. The twins behaved well even the ceremony took over two hours. They were quite bothered by the loud air horns the people used as graduates went to stage. It took half an hour to reunited with Raymond after the ceremony ended. Cellphone didn't work because all lines were busy when everyone tried to contact their friends after the ceremony. It was around 8pm when we left the venue. On our way to the car, daddy played with Joanne by kicking her butts lightly. She broke into tears and weiled. She wouldn't forgive daddy though I thought she was overreacting. Mommy said daddy asked for trouble when played with the twins at the wrong time. The kids were touchy when they were tired.
It was Raymond's big day and he still had to attend his friends' commencement and the party that followed. We went to dinner with Kathy and Derek while Raymond had fun with his friends. It was past 8:30pm when we had dinner. We returned to the cousins' home after we dropped off Kathy and Derek at their home. We asked the twins to take a nap on our way. They were fully recharged by the time they saw Amanda and Andric again.
Daddy set up an air mattress in the family room so that mommy could have a good night sleep without daddy's snoring. Joanne wanted to fill daddy's spot in the bed. However, when I said she is replacing daddy's snoring with her kicking and mommy still couldn't get a good sleep. She understood and returned to Amanda's bed. Mommy gave her a raincheck. She could sleep with mommy after we came home.
Sunday, Jun 19, 2005 (7y+10m+13d)
In the morning, the twins gave daddy the Father's Day presents. They wrote English and Chinese passages that praised daddy. They even included a stack of service coupons as gift to daddy. My favorite was the back massage coupon. There were other services such as taking out the garbage, folding laundary etc. that would help mommy instead of daddy. We went to Todai Seafood Buffet for lunch in Beverley Center. We had to pay dinner price because they serve dinner quality food all day today for Father's day. Both Allen and I got a free Todai coffee mug that says "The world's greatest dad". I joked that both of the mug couldn't be true at the same time unless he and I lived in different worlds.
We left the restaurant and went to Venice Beach. The kids ran to the beach and they flirted with the ocean waves. Initially they only got their feet wet. Then not long later, their knees were wet too. Then a bit later, they just fell down and got soaked from head to toe. The kids built a sand dam on the beach and watch ocean waves crashed into it. Joanne quitted early complaining she was cold. The other kids kept themselves busy, active and warm.
After the kids changed into dry warm clothing, we went for a walk on the famous boardwalk. The kids wanted to rent bicycles and rollerblade to enjoy the long trail along the beach. We said no because we didn't have enough time. We walked from the north end of the boardwalk and stopped at the Muscle Beach. The kids played on the exercise equipment there. The twins hang on to the gymnastic rings and used them like a swing.
When the kids walked back to the car, they came to a grassy knoll. As Joanne ran down the slope, she tumbled and scuffed her hip. She cried all the way back to the car until mommy put on a bandage for her. We went back to the cousins' home and we took turn taking shower. We postponed dinner because we had a full buffet lunch and the kids had a slice of pizza on the boardwalk a little earlier. After we were all cleaned up, we went out for dinner. The restaurant Allen picked had late dinner special, most dishes reduced price to $4.99 each after 9:30pm. We had a relatively inexpensive dinner yet very filling. It was midnight when everyone went to bed.
Monday, Jun 20, 2005 (7y+10m+14d)
Allen and daddy got up at 5am in the morning. He dropped me off at LAX before 6:30am. I was glad that we arrived early because the security check line into the terminal was alarmingly long. The departure was delayed a little due to a clogged lavatory. I took public transportation back to work. The car was still at the same place I left it on Friday. I was in my office chair at 9:30am.The twins got up from bed at around the same time daddy was back in the office. Aunt Ivy needed to go back to school for an end of school year party for the PTA. Two of Amanda's friends came to the house to play. Mommy baby-sat the six kids in the morning before aunt Ivy returned. While the kids had fun on their own, mommy vacuumed the house and cleaned the kitchen. She also cooked pasta for the kids. In the afternoon, the kids swam in the pool. Though it was in summer, the temperature was kind of cool this week. Nevertheless, the twins really enjoyed the swim.
Four hundred some miles away, it was an exhausting day for daddy in the office. Getting up at 5am to take a flight was quite drainning. Daddy had dinner at grandma's.
Tuesday, Jun 21, 2005 (7y+10m+15d)
It was summer solstice today. We had the longest day in the year. The twins went to Knotts Berry Farm with their cousins. One of the twins' classmate was in Irvine this week and she joined them at the theme park. When they visited Knott's Berry Farm last year, they spent the whole day in Camp Snoopy. I asked mommy to let them try other parts of the park. But I didn't how their trip turned out. They didn't want to leave. Mommy forced them to leave at 7:30pm, half an hour before closing. After mommy dropped off the cousins at home, she packed the luggage and loaded the car. They drove to Irvine and had a quick dinner there. They would stay at Kathy's home for the next two days. They stayed up chatting till 1am. The twins went to bed early on their own at around midnight.
Daddy had dinner at grandma's home again in the family absence.
Wednesday, Jun 22, 2005 (7y+10m+16d)
The twins stayed in bed until past 10am. It was a hot day in Irvine, it was 85°F in the morning. After lunch, they went to shopping in the mall. When the sun was not as hot, they went to swim in the community pool.
Thursday, Jun 23, 2005 (7y+10m+17d)
Mommy left Irvine after lunch. Kathy rode with mommy and the twins. Raymond and Derek drove a different car. Mommy and the guests arrived home 7 hours later. Mommy drove the entire trip on her own. She drove slower and took several breaks. The youngsters sped much faster. But they stopped at the Gilroy outlet store on the way. When daddy came back from work. We all went out to a Malaysian dinner at Layan Layan. When we came home, we watched some video recorded on Raymond's XBox media center. We watched some episodes of the Hell's Kitchen and an episode of Beauty and the Geek.
Friday, Jun 24, 2005 (7y+10m+18d)
Daddy went to work as usual. Mommy, Kathy and the twins went to shopping. The boys drove to Berkeley to meet their friends. Raymond made a dinner reservation at the House of Prime Ribs last night. But the restaurant was fully booked, the earlier time we could get was at 9:30pm. The twins ate some snack in the afternoon in preparation for a late dinner. We rendezvoused in the restaurant on time. We stil had to wait for like half an hour for our table despite our reservation. We all had a full dinner. The twins ordered kids' meal which included a drink and an ice cream. We went to Ghirardelli Square after dinner. Derek had a headache since before dinner, so he stayed in the car to rest. We went in to walk around the square for awhile despite most stores were closed. Raymond had a cone of ice cream while the rest of us were too full to have any.
Raymond drove Derek back to Berkeley to his friends before returning. We got home past midnight. The twins took a nap on the way.
Saturday, Jun 25, 2005 (7y+10m+19d)
Mommy and Kathy went out for dimsum lunch with Kathy's friend Sue. The rest of us stayed in bed until dimsum takeout returns. After lunch, they went to see Sue's new home still under construction. Daddy was not interested in other people's house and preferred to stay home to watch the movie Kung Fu Hustle on video. When they came back, we went to Santana Row for a coffee break. Daddy took the twins to the Border bookstore to read some books. They asked daddy to buy some coloring books. Jasmine wanted a picture book on horses. Daddy told her that we would never afford a horse, it was pointless to just look at pictures of horses. Mommy and Kathy walked around Santana Row when Raymond drove back to Berkeley to get together with his brother and friends. As soon as Joanne returned home, she started painting her coloring books. Jasmine wanted to ride her bikes. Daddy followed her in Joanne's bikes. Her 20" bike was big enough for adults after a quick adjustment to the seat. For dinner, we went to Maruichi for ramen. We watched the recordings on Raymond's Xbox in his absence before the twins went to bed. Raymond and Derek returned after 2am.
Sunday, Jun 26, 2005 (7y+10m+20d)
The twins got up before 10am. Daddy set up the eyetoy Antigrav demo game for them. They had fun playing the hoverboard game. They got a hang of the control very quickly. As soon as Derek woke up, Jasmine switched the game to Kingdom Hearts. She heard from Raymond that Derek had completed the game and she wanted him to show her how to play it. The kids had some pizza left over that Raymond and Derek brought back last night. We went to lunch and we ordered mostly noodles. Raymond and Derek didn't eat much because they were full with pizza. We said farewell after lunch at around 2:30pm. They headed back to Irvine because Derek's summer school would start the next day and their daddy would come back from Singapore on Tuesday. After the guests left, we hooked up with Terence's family in the afternoon. Hing asked if we liked to watch movie. Daddy suggested watching Batman begins in IMAX format. We drove all the way to the nearest IMAX theater in Dublin. There was a IMAX dome in San Jose, but a dome was not a good screen for watching movies. The other choice was in SONY Metreon in San Francisco, but it would be farther away plus extra parking cost in the city. We arrived exactly on the movie start time. The 4:15pm show was already sold out. We decided to watch the next show on 7:30pm. There was a big inflated slide outside the theater. The twins wanted to play on it. The admission was $3 for 10 minutes of play time. The kids got on and they played for more than 30 minutes. The attendants didn't enforce the time limit because the slide was not too crowded. Terence initially played together with the twins. Later the twins told us that Terence left them alone because he made a new friend already. Terence sat at the top to push his new friend down the slide. When it was time to go, he didn't want to leave. We stopped at Jamba juice to get some smoothies. Then we went to Old Navy to shop for some clothes for the kids. We were there until the store closed. We had a Thai restaurant for dinner. Joanne said she could not finish her plate because she had too much Jamba Juice. We went into the IMAX theater 30 minutes before showtime to ensure a good seat. The movie Batman Begins was over two hours long and the twins found the 12000 watts sound system too loud. They watched the movie with their palms over their ears. Terence's parents tried to cover his eyes when scary scenes came up, but he pulled their hands away. The movies was about fears and hallucinogenic poisons. Hence it was filled with many scary hallucinatory imageries. The kids were not scared to watch the movie, but they might have nightmare later. It was past 10pm when we got out of the theater. The kids fell asleep on the way home. Since they played on the slide in the afternoon. We woke them up to have them wash their feet and change their dirty clothes into PJs.
Monday, Jun 27, 2005 (7y+10m+21d)
The twins went to summer school. They were very happy to be playing with their classmates again. They said Annette and Jimmy were not coming to summer school. Rachael went to summer camp. Summer school only last half a day. They were home early, but they had no homework from summer school. At bedtime, the twins requested bedtime story. Jasmine said we had not read bedtime story for like three months. I looked up this journal, we stopped for about 5 weeks. The twins couldn't get enough and asked daddy to go on and on. They left their alarm clock downstairs in the guest room for Derek to use during his visit. Daddy kept on reading without knowing the time. They let daddy stop when daddy was getting tired. It turned out the story telling last for a full hour.

The twins went to summer school. They had piano class in the afternoon. After class, mommy dropped off the twins at Annette's family. Daddy and mommy went to a dinner without the twins. Joanne didn't want to go to bed immediately. She said Ms Shwu expected to see her play a piece in the class tomorrow. She must practice it a few times before bedtime. It was late, so they didn't get bedtime story tonight.

Daddy's ex-roommate Chun-Sing from graduate school days and his family came to San Francisco. We have not seen each other for almost 20 years. We invited them to come to our home for dinner. Mommy prepared pasta and salad. His son is 14 and daughter is 12. After dinner, we chatted about our past 20 years. We also asked his children to play some music on the piano. They went to visit their other friends at about 9:30pm.Daddy's cousin and the twins cousins came visit later at night. The twins visited Amanda and Andric just couple weeks ago. This was a receipical visit. This time another cousin Alisa came from Hong King. Alisa visited us more than 5 years ago. She is 14 years old now. She got along with the twins very quickly because she has a sister in Hong Kong who is about the same age as the twins.
Saturday, Jul 2, 2005 (7y+10m+26d)
We stayed home to prepare for a BBQ party in the afternoon. Our guests decided to go shopping in Gilroy before the BBQ. The other guests arrived at around 4pm. Ms Shwu's family arrived first, followed by Ellen's and then Li Hua's family. The kids had a great time playing in the backyard. After the BBQ, the adults played some Mahjongg, some watch a movie on DVD and the kids played video games. Our cousins didn't return until 8pm for the leftovers. Mrs Shwu gave daddy a short free piano lession before leaving. After all the other guests had left, the cousins continued to play till past midnight.
Sunday, Jul 3, 2005 (7y+10m+27d)
Everyone got up late. We had lunch with grandma Chui. Alisa, Amanda and Andric are grandma's brother's granddaughters. Grandma was particularly glad to meet relatives from Hong Kong. After lunch, we dropped grandma back to her home. The girls went to Valleyfair mall for shopping. The boys went to Fry's Electronics store. At around 7pm, we rendezvoused again at the mall. It was closing time, the girls actually kept the store open for another half an hours because the clerks wanted to stay open until they paid for their purchase.
We went from valleyfair mall to Pasta Pomodoro in Santana Row. We had a delicious dinner. Then we strolled around Santana Row. Most of the stores were closed except the restaurants. The Borders bookstore was still open. We went in to browse some books. We stayed until 10:30pm. Then we returned home. The kids played some video games. The cousins worked on some homework before going to bed. The twins didn't have any homework from summer school, so they went to bed early. Joanne and Jasmine had a fight about who got to sleep with Alisa tonight. Joanne won because Jasmine slept with Alisa in the past two nights. It was bad news for Alisa. She didn't get a good sleep because of Joanne's snoring.
Monday, Jul 4, 2005 (7y+10m+28d)
Everyone got up late because it was the Independence Day holiday. It was 229th birthday of the USA. We had Korean food for lunch. The cousins decided to shop at Gilroy factory outlets again on their way home. We said goodbye at 2pm. The twins wanted to see a movie in the theater. They said this time its their turn to pick the movie. They picked The Adventure of Shark Boy and Lava Girl in 3D. The twins said they like the movie. We had a short trip at the valleyfair mall after the movie. When we got home, the twins practiced piano. At around 6:30pm, Evon, Siu Ling and her friend came to our house for dinner. We served the left over from our BBQ party earlier. After the quick dinner, the women started a game of Mahjongg. The twins played some video games before going to bed early. Daddy watched TV. Ronald arrived later for dinner and he joined in watching TV. We watched the Capitol Fourth concert from Washington DC. They showed firework at the end of the concert. We also heard some thundering sound from a distance, but we could not see any firework from our house. The guests left after 1pm.
Tuesday, Jul 5, 2005 (7y+10m+29d)
The twins returned to summer school as usual. They didn't have piano class today because of the summer break. Mommy took the twins to her tennis match. Daddy stopped by the tennis courts to pick up the twins after work. The twins were playing with the Lava Girl squirt guns they got from McDonald's happy meal. When daddy arrived, their hands were cold and their shirts were wet. Daddy took them home even though they said they were not cold. The twins came home, took shower. Mommy came home later after she won the match. The twins practiced piano in mommy's presence before going to bed.
