The twins are 6 and 1/3 years old.The twins performed us a puppet show in the morning. They woke up a few hours before daddy and mommy did. They had plenty of rehearsal before they decided to invite us to the show. Jasmine helped to gave out tickets and let the audience through the door. Beside daddy and mommy, there was also a large crowd of stuffed animals in the audience, each with a ticket around their necks. Joanne hid under the computer desk behind a curtain she hung across the opening. She put their care-bears and two puppy dolls on the keyboard tray. She reached behind the tray to move the dolls around. The story line of the show was mainly around sleeping and eating. The characters woke up in the morning. Jasmine served them breakfast. After breakfast, they went back to bed. We had an intermission, just like in the Disney on ice show we went to. The twins said it was necessary because people needed to go to the bathroom. Joanne said she needed a break because her legs were numb for hiding under the desk for too long. Then the characters woke up again to have lunch. Again Jasmine was the cook and waitress. The plot was pretty boring in my opinion. Mommy said she needed to leave the show to prepare breakfast. The performers were not offended by the walkout. I guessed they were more hungry than being proud of the performance.
In the late afternoon, Michelle & her husband and son Aaron, Sunnie and her son Ryan and sister Jenny came to visit us. They brought along grocery for dinner. We had beef steak for dinner. As usual, Jasmine didn't want any.

We went to lunch at Hing's home. In mid afternoon, we went to Annette's piano recital. One of daddy's coworker also sent her son to the same piano teacher. The odd coincidence was that she was also a long lost high school classmate of Annette's mom. She was surprised to see me at the recital, but she was more surprised to see her high school classmate there. We all went to Pasta Pomodoro for dinner with Annette's and Nicholas' family.
This was the first time to twins attend a recital. We told them they had to do the same in the future. It was nice to let the twins see how other kids make mistakes during a performance. The twins, especially Jasmine, need to learn that no one is perfect and that is why practice is important.
The following are pieces used for piano recital by Annette's class. (not in particular order of difficulty)

Wednesday, Dec 10, 2003 (6y+4m+4d)
The twins went to school as usual. Mommy took them to abacus and piano class in the afternoon. Before they reached the piano school, steam bellowed out under the hood. When the twins came off the car, they wanted to go to the front of the car to check out what happened. Mommy yelled at them for being dangerously stupid. While the twins were in class, she sought help to fix the radiator hose that came off.
Thursday, Dec 11, 2003 (6y+4m+5d)
After mommy took the twins to school, she took the car to the dealer to check the radiator. On the way there, the radiator hose came off again. She barely made it to the dealership. It turned out that an expansion value was broken. The radiator didn't circulate at all which cause the pressure to build up and blew off the hose.Annette's mom helped us pick up the twins from school when mommy's car was in the shop.

The twins went to school as usual. Mommy went to pick up the car from the dealership. Annette's mom helped us pick up the twins from school in the afternoon. Jimmy's mom grabbed Jasmine by the shoulders to interrogate her if she kicked Jimmy during recess. When mommy found out Jasmine was in trouble in school, she asked Jasmine what happened. She refused to say anything. We found out from the other kids that the kids played tags on the playground during recess. It was girls against boys. They were playing very rough by pulling on the jackets. Jimmy fell down and for some unknown reasons, Jasmine kicked his back while he was on the ground. We went out to dinner with Annette's family after we picked up the twins from their home.

We went to Toyota in the morning to check out the new hybrid Prius. We were amazed by how nicely the car was built. Of course the gas mileage of 51 mpg (highway) and 59 mpg (city) was unbelievably impressive too. We were not very happy with the service from our car dealer. We were also fed up with European car's poor quality and cost of repair. We started to look for alternatives and replacement. The twins liked the Prius too. They liked the power button that turns on the car. They said it was like a TV set.Great grandma, grandma Ling, Aunt Jun, Aunt Tina, Uncle Ivan, Cousin Natalie came to our house in the afternoon. They brought grocery and prepared dinner. Daddy caught a sored throat and took a nap in the afternoon. The rest was effectively, and daddy recovered before dinner.
Sunday, Dec 14, 2003 (6y+4m+8d)
We went to lunch with grandma Chui. Daddy spent the afternoon replacing couple of exterior light fixtures outside the house. The twins stayed inside to do homework and practice piano.Annette's & Nicholas' family came to our house to dinner. Mommy prepared a rib-eye roast. The timing was all wrong. She ended up slicing the meat into steaks and prepared broiled steaks instead. The kids had pasta before returning to their games. Joanne came to our dinner take to get a few bites of beef steak. As usual, Jasmine was not interested.
We sent the twins to bed after the guests had left. We enjoyed a rental movie of "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" in the absence of the twins' noise.

The twins were surprised that their cousin is an adults. So far, the cousins they met were all little kids.

The twins went to school as usual. Jill picked up the twins for us in the afternoon. They finished their homework at Annette's home.Mommy took the cousins to Monterey Bay Aquarium, 17 mile drive. She picked up the twins from Jill's home on the way back. We then all rendezvoused at Cheesecake Factory Restaurant. We waited almost an hour for the table. Mommy and daddy waited at the restaurant for the table. The rest of the group went into the mall to look around. The twins led the way to their favorite Disney's Store. They managed to make their cousin Raymond to buy them two princess radios. We enjoyed a long dinner when our table was ready. We came out of the restaurant at 10pm. We tried to go to Vasona park to see the Christmas lights. But we found out the light show only open till 9pm. We took a stroll in Santana Row instead. The twins were asleep by the time we got home. We carried them in bed directly.
Friday, Dec 19, 2003 (6y+4m+13d)
The twins went to school as usual. They exchanged Christmas gifts at school today. The party was unlike that held in kindergarten and preschool in the past two years. The event had no Christmas atmosphere at all.Daddy took a day off to drive the cousins to San Francisco. We stopped by Lake Merced, the twin peaks, Conservatory of flowers. We then went to lunch. We resumed our tour at Stow Lake, buffalo grove, the wind mill in Golden Gate park, cliff house, Lombard street, Pier 39. I sent them to the Hyde street cable car terminal. They rode the cable car to the Powell Street terminal. They walked to Union Square where I picked them up again. We then drove around to see the nighttime city. We drove by the Market Street, the Ferry building, the Embarcadero, under the Bay Bridge, passed the San Francisco baseball stadium. We then got on highway I-280 and went straight home. We arrived at home at half past seven. Mommy already prepared a hot pot dinner waiting for us.
After dinner, we shared the photos we took in the past few days. The twins played like crazy with cousin Raymond. They also show their cousin their favorite movie, "Spirit". We took some Christmas pictures in front of the Christmas tree. Jasmine didn't like the flash and refused to take any more pictures. She went upstairs on her own. We later found that she went to bed and fell sound asleep. Joanne joined her soon after she found out Jasmine was already sleeping.
Saturday, Dec 20, 2003 (6y+4m+14d)
Daddy got up early at 6:30am. I dropped off the cousins at the bus stop before 7:30am. They booked a two day bus tour to Crater Lake in Oregon, along the way, they would see Eureka and other places in North California.Daddy went back to bed and slept till 10:30am. We went to Alameda for lunch with great grandma, Aunt Tina and Cousin Natalie. We then went to mommy's cousin Ken's home. The twins read Matthew's books together. Matthew was in preschool of the second year and he knew how to read his own books. They didn't play with their cousin Matthew and Alyssa that much. Matthew later was attached to the TV when the Hot Wheels cartoon was on. The twins received Christmas gifts from Matthew and Alyssa. Though we asked them to keep the presents wrapped till Christmas, they said they could read through the wrapping paper to tell one of the gifts was Finding Nemo. They received some cash gift from great grandma and Ken's mom. They also received two convertible cushion from Aunt Tina which can turn into blankets.
We returned home and went out to dinner with Annette's family. After dinner, we went to "Christmas in the Park" in San Jose. It drizzled and rained a little. Each of us was cladded with hooded jackets and umbrella, hence the rain didn't bother us. Annette's dad also read on newspaper about a house in Sunnyvale nicely decorated with Christmas lights. We headed to Sunnyvale to check that out. We were not disappointed. Joanne and Joanne came off the car to get a closer look in the rain. Jasmine and mommy stay dry inside the car.
We came home and the twins went to bed after they took a shower. They asked daddy to choose a book for bedtime story. They used to pick their own book, daddy got to pick different kind of reading for a change. I picked some nursery rhymes and children poems. The twins recognized some of them and recited or sang along with daddy.
Sunday, Dec 21, 2003 (6y+4m+15d)
The twins woke up early and played in their own room. They came into our own once. They whispered to themselves that they could not bother mommy's sleep. Then they went out and stayed out. Daddy woke up first and served them milk and cereal.Daddy took a nap in the afternoon. The twins played on their own. We had dinner at the Left Bank Restaurant in Santana Row. We continued with nursery rhymes and poems for bed time reading.

The twins had their winter break from school. They helped mommy pack the luggage for the ski trip. We picked up the cousins from the bus stop in the evening. They came back from their 3 day trip to the north. Grandma Chui and Aunt Elaine also joined us for tappanyaki dinner. The twins picked a Cheesecake factory teddy bear as cousin's Raymond's Christmas present. We read 4 Aesop's fables for bedtime stories. The twins switched their beds just for fun. They have never done that before. It was a very unusual occasion because they wouldn't even switch their clothes.
Tuesday, Dec 23, 2003 (6y+4m+17d)
Daddy took the rest of the week off for a ski trip. We dropped off the cousins at the bus stop in the morning. They would travel to Mexico and then return to LA to visit other relatives. We took off with Annette and Nicholas' family and head toward the High Sierra. We arrived at Nugget's hotel before 5:30pm. We had dinner after we checked in and then we went to bed.
Wednesday, Dec 24, 2003 (6y+4m+18d)
It is Christmas eve. We woke up at 7am in the morning. We took off towards Mount Rose ski area at 7:30am. It was snowing in the mountain. Snow chains were required just 3 miles away from the destination. Nicholas and our family cars has 4 wheel drive and we were able to go up the mountain without the chains. Annette's family had to stop to install the snow chain. We all waited to move at the same pace. We arrived at the ski area at 9am. By the time we got through the line, we missed the 9am class. We signed up the kids for the next class at 11:30am. But the instructor said since we had 5 kids, she could start a class for our kids at 10am. We took time to have breakfast. It was snowing with wind blowing at 10 to 15 mph. We could barely see the kids from a distance because of the falling snow. The instructor taught them a couple to technical near the lodge. A Santa drove a snowmobile towing a sleigh came to pick them up. He transported the kids to the chairlift where they went up the mountain to ski. The lesson ended a bit after noon. We fed the kids lunch at the lodge. The kids didn't want to ski again because the blowing snow hurt their faces despite the goggle they wore. However, they wanted to play with the snow discs we brought along with us. The kids spent about half an hour sledding down the slope. Annette's little brother Alex enjoyed the sledding despite the close to blizzard condition. We left the ski area at around 2pm. The down hill trip was very slow because everyone was driving at about 10 mph in heavy snow. We got back to our hotel room at around 4:30pm. Mommy and the twins took a shower before we went out to have a buffet dinner at El Dorado hotel in Reno. We went to Circus Circus hotel's midway to win some stuffed animal. We saw CW and his family there in Reno. They had come to Reno since Monday and they were going to leave on Friday too.
We returned to the hotel before 9:30pm. The twins played some UNO and had some fruit before going to bed.
Thursday, Dec 25, 2003 (6y+4m+19d)
It is Christmas day. We got up at 7am in the morning. We checked out from Nugget hotel. We headed toward Truckee with Annette's family. Nicholas' family didn't go with us. Nicholas' sister Patricia had a fever. They decided to go home.We tried to stop by McDonald's for breakfast. We found that all McDonald's were closed for Christmas. It was snowing all day, though the wind was not as strong as yesterday's. Annette's father had to stop the car to install the snow chains. We were able to drive in the snow using 4 wheel drive. We arrived at Squaw valley around 9 am. Jasmine lost her goggle. We retraced everywhere she had been but couldn't find it. When mommy was upset with her, Jasmine said she would buy a new pair using her own money. The kids spent some time playing in the snow next to an open fire in the courtyard, while mommy went to look for breakfast. We had a nice relaxing brunch enjoying a White Christmas. The kids said they didn't want to ski because the blowing snow hurt their faces yesterday.
We took the kids to the snowy slope outside the ski school. They built some snow castles with some beach tools. They also sled down the slope on the snow discs. We left at around 2pm. The kids took a nap in the car.
We returned to Reno and checked in to Atlantis hotel. We had a nice Christmas dinner at the hotel's steakhouse. After dinner, the kids went to the hotel's game room. We bumped into mommy's ex-high-school-mate Michelle and her family in the hotel. They played the games for tickets. Joanne and Jasmine won 500+ and 150+ tickets respectively. Joanne did not want to combine her tickets with Jasmine's, but mommy made her. They wanted some toys but mommy wanted them to have something useful instead of junk toys that they wouldn't really play with. They used their tickets to exchange for two notebooks and a few erasers. They used the new notebook for their journals and stories. Jasmine started writing as soon as she got back to the hotel room.

We got up at 8am, an hour later than the past two mornings. We went to Soda Springs for snow tubing at around 10am. It was a nice sunny day finally for a change. We left at around 2pm after lunch when the twins said they wanted to take a nap. We came down from the mountain. Annette's family car had to stop several times because the windshield washer on their car was frozen. It failed to wipe off the muddy sprays kicked up by the cars on the highway. Our trip back was further delayed when we were stuck in Sacramento's Friday rush hour. Mommy and Annette's mom wanted to stopped by the Factory Stores at Vacaville on the way. We got back to the bay area at around 8:30pm. We had noodle for dinner with Annette's family before returning home. As soon as we arrived home, the twins rushed into the living room to unwrap their Christmas presents under the tree. The twins took a hot showers before going to bed. Due to the long nap they took on the return trip, we let them stay up till past midnight. Mommy spent the evening unpacking and washed several loads of laundry. The twins wrote their journal on their new notebooks. Their entries were included below.

They showed us their vacation pictures after lunch. Lucy again bought the twins many toys including Hello Kitty T-shirts, couple of Hello Kitty dolls dressed like Hawaiians and a Hula dancing and a surfing Hello Kitty key chain dolls. Joanne named the surfer Sorifa. According to the news I heard before Christmas, any item with Hello Kitty was one of the hottest Christmas presents this year.We stayed home for the rest of the day. The twins practiced piano and did their abacus homework.

Monday, Dec 29, 2003 (6y+4m+23d)
It was raining all day and the temperature was low in the low 50°F range. The news said the High Sierra received two feet of new snow today. The twins were still in their winter break. They played at home most of the day except when they followed mommy to grocery shopping.Joanne told us her stomach hurt after dinner. Daddy was worried that she really had a stomach problem. However, mommy believed Joanne was just pretending so that she didn't have to finish dinner. Daddy had a talk with her and she finally confessed that she was just pretending. Daddy reminded her of the story about the boy who cried wolf.
Later in the evening, Joanne crawled on the floor and up the stairs. She said her knee hurt. Daddy said she must be pretending again. Tears rolled down her face. She said her knee really hurt. Daddy again lectured her on how pretending and lying would make others to distrust her.
Tuesday, Dec 30, 2003 (6y+4m+24d)
The twins were still in their winter break. When mommy asked them to do abacus homework and practice piano, Jasmine complied. Joanne had her excuse, she said she was tired. Mommy gave her permission to take a rest. She went to play instead. In the evening, Joanne tried to use the same excuse. Mommy ordered her to finish her homework or else she was not allowed to sleep. When she saw Jasmine having ice cream, she had an incentive to work faster.
Wednesday, Dec 31, 2003 (6y+4m+25d)
The twins slept late into the morning. When daddy came back from work in the evening, we went to CW's home for the New Year countdown party. Several families were invited to the potluck dinner. After the dinner, we all sat around the table to chat about different topics. One of the family just finished submitting college applications for their kids. Other parents were interested to learn about the process. Though most of us went through college applications 2 decades ago, we still like to find out what the recent trends are. Our twins still had 12 years to go before college, but the information was interesting nonetheless. We also touched on Hong Kong politics, health issues for mid-age people like ourselves etc. The kids played on their own. The older boys played their video games. The girls played their own games. The girls played on the treadmill like a conveyor belt. They sat down on the front end and dropped off at the rear. They also played bingo. When it was about midnight, we popped the champaigns in front of the TV. After the countdown, we played some casino games. The family ended up with most chips at the end won the prize of the night. Jenny's family was the winner two years in a row. The twins had enough sleep in the morning. They stayed up with us all the way. It was 2am when we arrived home. They got in bed right away while mommy and daddy fought a trail of ants in the kitchen for another half an hour.
Thursday, Jan 1, 2004 (6y+4m+26d)
Happy New Year! Welcome to 2004.We slept in till 10:30 am. We turned on the TV to watch the annual Tournament of the Roses or commonly known as the Rose Parade. We didn't disturb the twins. They came downstairs half an hour later. Jasmine was mad at us because we didn't wake her up to see the Rose Parade. However, after half an hour later, she was bored and left the seat before the parade was finished.
It was a rainy and gloomy day. Mommy went out to grocery shop for dinner. But the rest of us stayed home in front of the TV all day long. We watched couple of movies on the movie channels. The twins complained that we watched couple of grown up movies and then they took over the TV for the TOON Disney channel.
Annette's daddy stopped by the borrow some DVDs. We found out that Annette's little brother Alex caught a flu after the ski trip. He was sick for almost a week. We were glad that our twins were quite "weathered" in comparison and could survive some rough conditions.

Sunday, Jan 4, 2004 (6y+4m+29d)
We had lunch with Uncle Ivan, Aunt Tina and Cousin Natalie. After we came home, daddy took the twins to the park on their bikes. It was a cold day, I had the twins circle the park couple of time because stopping at the playground. The twins complained that the equipment in the playground was too cold to the touch. I told them we should go home instead. Jasmine suggested that we returned to the usual cul-de-sac so that they can practice riding two wheels. Joanne lent Jasmine her two-wheeler to practice. After a couple of successful runs, she was able to keep the bicycle up. She was too busy balancing that she kept bumping to the curbs. It was so successful that she asked daddy to remove the training wheels on the bike as soon as she arrived home.We had dinner with grandma Chui and Aunt Elaine. We sent the twins to bed early after they have cleaned up.
Monday, Jan 5, 2004 (6y+4m+30d)
The twins returned to school after a two week winter break. Jasmine set a timer before dinner and did her reading. She kept going after mommy told her dinner was ready. She read for 50+ minutes. When it was time for bedtime story, the twins were not paying attention. Daddy cancelled the reading after three paragraphs. The twins argued that they had paid attention. When daddy gave them a quiz, they didn't remember anything from the first three paragraphs. Though they were upset about the cancelled reading, they understood who was responsible for that.
