Happy Birthday, twins. They are 6 year old today.Daddy took the morning off from work to help mommy set up the birthday party. The rental jumper house was delivered in the early morning. The twins went in and jumped for awhile before breakfast. Daddy set up a camping tent in the backyard per the twins' request. Daddy went out to pick up the birthday cake and some catered food. Mommy and the twins stayed home to wait for the guests.
The guests started to arrive after 11:30am. Annette and his brother Alex, Nicholas and her sister Patricia, Ansel, Valerie, Claire, Terence etc. (and their parents) were among the guests. The jumper house was a great attraction. After we had lunch, we cut the cake before daddy returned to office for a meeting. The kids played the pinata. The twins didn't even remember who won. All they cared about were how much candies they grabbed. Some kids stayed behind longer because of the jumper house. Claire and her mommy stayed till almost 8pm.
The rental people would come back the next morning for the jumper house. The twins invited daddy to jump with them inside when daddy came home from work. Daddy were exhausted after about 20 bounces. It was amazing that the kids could jump in it all day long. I asked the twins whether they had a happy birthday. They replied yes unanimously. Joanne added that she was really happy for being 6 year old.
The twins played hide-n-seek with daddy for awhile after dinner. Then they soaked in the bathtub with mommy. Daddy on the other hand found that mommy left the sprinklers on. The deflated jumper house was soaked in half an inch deep of water. Daddy spent the next two hours blotting the rental equipment dry. We were lucky that the electric blower still ran, otherwise we might have to pay a lot for the damage. Mommy had been busy preparing and hosting the party for the past few days. The two hour sweaty rescue mission was nothing in comparison.
We started on the Sleeping Beauty from Disney's Princess Treasury at bedtime. The twins asked for two chapters as usual. Half way through the first chapter, both twins said one chapter was okay. Though they didn't say, we knew the twins were quite exhausted due to the birthday party.

We all overslept in the morning. The rental people came back to retrieve the jumper house from our backyard, we didn't even wake up.The twins went to swim with their ex-classmates from the pre-school. They also went to piano class in the afternoon. Joanne said she told the piano teacher about their birthday party yesterday. They both received a small gift from the teacher.

August 8 is read as eight eight (八八) in Mandarin which sounds like daddy (爸爸). Today is the Chinese father's day.The twins went shopping at Costco with mommy. When daddy came back from work, the twins wanted daddy to join them in their board games which they received as birthday gifts. Daddy needed to assume the role of a princess to play their games. The twins said I didn't need to wear the tiara if I didn't want to.
The twins often said "too-taste" when they meant toothpaste. It seemed like it was not a deliberate word-play, but a slip of tongue. When I challenged them what "too-taste" was, they corrected themselves as if they didn't notice they had made a mistake.
When the twins hogged over the big screen TV, they said the TV was theirs because they picked it. When we shopped for the TV, mommy asked the twins opinion to pick between a silver vs black exterior. Now they owned the TV because mommy asked the wrong question.
Joanne had a dislike of Barbie. She had several Barbie-like Disney princess dolls including the Mermaid Barbie. But she didn't consider them Barbie despite they are all made by Mattel. She explains that she didn't like Barbie because when she was little, she smelled a Barbie's butt which made her throw up.
Daddy continued on Sleeping Beauty at bedtime. Again they asked for two chapters. I stopped after one and a half chapter because the twins were not paying attention.

We got up early and headed south. We were going to Los Angeles. We arrived at LA at around 2:30pm. We had a late lunch before checking into the hotel. We stayed at Wilshire Grand Hotel in downtown LA. We learned too late that the hotel charged extra for parking. Since there was no self parking, it was very inconvenient to go through the valet to get anything from the car. After we got the key to the hotel room, we went to visit daddy's cousin. The twins' cousins Amanda and Andric had been waiting all day. At soon as we arrived, the kids all jumped into the pool to have a swim. Though the air temperature was hot, the water was rather cold. Jasmine was shivering after about half an hour. She got out of the water first. Joanne discovered the water slide. When she slid into the deep end of the pool, daddy was waiting there to pull her out of the water.
We had Malaysian food for dinner. After dinner, Joanne wanted to stay overnight with Amanda. Jasmine wanted to stay with us. After some persuasion from Amanda, she was willing to stay with reluctance. Daddy and mommy went back to the hotel without the twins.
Sunday, Aug 10, 2003 (6y+4d)
We went to SeaWorld in San Diego. It was a 2 hour drive from LA. Amanda's family and Amanda's cousin went with us too. Jasmine said she did not like Amanda because Amanda only played with her own cousin. She liked Andric better because he paid more attention to her. They enjoyed the Shamu's show and the sea lion show. They were thrilled to touch the dolphins at their feeding pool. They spent a long time in the playground before we left the theme park.
We had dinner at Hunter Steakhouse in Oceanside. It was a nice restaurant on the way back to LA. We parted with them at the restaurant after dinner. We went back to the hotel directly.
Monday, Aug 11, 2003 (6y+5d)
We visited Kathy and her children Raymond and Derek. Ricky was on a business trip overseas. The twins missed ET. They knew ET drowned a few months ago and they understood they would never see ET again. We spent the afternoon at South Coast Plaza. The twins and daddy went to the Disney store. Jasmine bought a Tinker Belle nightshirt. Joanne picked a Sleeping Beauty purse and a toy cell phone. Mommy commented it was typical of Joanne to make herself fashionable. We had dinner with Kathy's family before we returned to the hotel.
Tuesday, Aug 12, 2003 (6y+6d)
We went to Knott's Berry Farm theme park with Amanda, Andric and their mom. The kids spent the whole day in Camp Snoopy. We didn't see three quarters of the theme park. We didn't miss much because the kids were too young for the rides outside of Camp Snoopy anyway.Uncle Allen rendezvoused with us after work at the restaurant. After dinner, Joanne went with Amanda. Jasmine returned to the hotel with daddy and mommy.
Wednesday, Aug 13, 2003 (6y+7d)
We got up late. We checked out from the hotel and went to Amanda's home. Jasmine rode Andric's motorized toy outside the house. Joanne played with Amanda in the car. We had lunch in Monterey Park. Jasmine told us about her loose tooth. She was rather proud to join the rank of big girls by having a loose tooth like many of her classmates. She was proud to have it before Joanne did. She showed off her loose tooth at every opportunity she got.We left for Las Vegas at 2pm. It was a 4 hour drive from LA to Las Vegas. We checked into the Venetian Hotel before dark. It was the biggest and grandest hotel room we had ever stayed in. The kids went to the pool to swim. We swam in the pool until it went dark. We had a quick late dinner in the food court of the hotel. We then went for a night stroll to see the Las Vegas night scene. Andric wanted to see the white tigers. The kids complained that they were too tired. We cancelled the plan and went back to the hotel.
Thursday, Aug 14, 2003 (6y+8d)
Daddy got up in the morning and went to the casino before everyone woke up. Daddy won almost a hundred dollar from the slot machines. When I got back to the hotel room, the kids were still in bed. Uncle Allen watched the kids. Mommy and Aunt Ivy went shopping already. They came back before the kids were up and ready. We had a quick lunch at the food court. We went to New York, New York Hotel in the afternoon. The kids and the dads stayed in the game room. The moms went to the casino. The kids won many tickets to exchange for toys. Jasmine had almost 200 tickets, Joanne had more than 300. Andric won over 500 tickets with his father's help. Joanne had enough to get a micro boombox, she was thrilled to have her own working FM radio. The trouble was that daddy spent over $5 at a tourist shop to buy the batteries. The batteries definitely cost more than the radio. Jasmine spent her tickets to buy a sheet of Care Bears stickers plus other smaller toys.
Jasmine's loose tooth came off. She wanted daddy to save it for her. She later saved the tooth in a plastic treasure box with a label "tooth saver" on it. She got the treasure box from her last visit to the dentist office.
We stopped by the Coca Cola and M&M store. Daddy stayed in the car outside of the store because parking was too far away. We then went to Paris Hotel for a buffet dinner. It was a very good meal at a good price because we went in before 5:30pm and we only paid the price of lunch. We went to see the fountain at Bellagio Hotel and the white tiger at the Mirage Hotel. The tiger was asleep and motionless, the kids were kinda disappointed. We walked back to the hotel because the Venetian was just across the road from the Mirage. We were back at the hotel at 9:05pm but the kids were very disappointed to find that the pool was closed at 9pm. We promised the kids that they could swim in the morning if they would get up early.
Uncle Allen drove daddy back to the Paris Hotel to fetch the car after the kids were settled down. When daddy came back to the hotel, mommy was in the casino. When I found her at the slot machine, she was collecting over $300 dollars of winning from the machine. She went on to gamble at a blackjack table. Daddy went to play on the slot machines but lost the money I won in the morning. When I found mommy again, she won another $300 in blackjack. It was almost 1am when mommy decided to quit. Her winning of the night was more than enough to cover the cost of the trip.
Friday, Aug 15, 2003 (6y+9d)
The kids got up at 8am because they wanted to swim. They spent almost an hour in the pool. We washed up after the swim just in time for checkout. We packed the luggage in the cars and went for a brunch at the Mirage. We went to see the white tiger again. This time the tiger was awake pacing around the cage and played in the pool too. The kids finally watched the tiger to their hearts' content. We took a gondola ride at the Venetian canals before we fetched the cars.Mommy tried her luck again in the Circus Circus Hotel's casino while the rest of us spent the afternoon at the Adventure Dome. The twins were disappointed to find that they were too short for some of the roller coaster rides. The twins liked the pirate ship which was basically a giant swing. They also liked a baby roller coaster that looked like a train.
Uncle Allen treated us dinner at Las Vegas' Chinatown. Joanne was so tired that she took a nap at the table. We said goodbye to the cousins at 8pm. They had a 4 hour drive and we had a 8 hour drive ahead of us. We decided to leave late to avoid traffic jam. Jasmine fell asleep in the car first. Joanne stayed up to watch a DVD because she took a nap in the restaurant earlier. Mommy drove most of the way. Daddy took a 2 hour shift. Mommy took over again after she took a nap in the car.
Saturday, Aug 16, 2003 (6y+10d)
We arrived home at 4am. We put the twins in bed with little interruption to their sleep. The twins didn't bother us in the morning because we told them last night about the long drive home. Daddy slept till 10am. The twins woke up daddy when they had trouble changing the TV channel. Daddy made breakfast for the kids because we were out of milk and cereal. Mommy slept till noon. We stayed home most of the day except we went out for a quick dinner.
The twins wanted daddy to resume Sleeping Beauty for bedtime story. They wanted two chapters. They said they forgot where we left off since last week.
Sunday, Aug 17, 2003 (6y+11d)
We stayed home most of the day to rest. The late night long drive really took the toll. It took extra sleep and naps to recuperate. Daddy and Joanne rode the bike to the park in the afternoon. Jasmine refused to go because she could not wear her helmet when wearing her pig tails. She rather stayed home than taking off her pig tails. We went out for dinner with Annette and Nicholas' family. After dinner, we went to Annette's home to watch The Lizzie McGuire Movie. Jasmine brought along her tooth saver box and her tooth to show her friends. The box was empty by the time she got home. We spent some time looking for it in the car. She was not too upset about missing the tooth after she realized she still had many teeth to lose. I told her that the tooth fairy took it away. She received a quarter under her pillow that night. Come to think of it. Jasmine's tooth fairy brought many quarters to daddy and mommy's slot machines a few nights ago.
Monday, Aug 18, 2003 (6y+12d)
The twins stayed home most of the day, except they went with mommy shopping for school supply in the afternoon. Daddy bought a Vectron Ultralite infrared remote control wireless flying saucer from Costco. The twins couldn't have enough of it. They wished the battery recharged faster so that they could play with it non-stop.Jasmine asked daddy to help her with the "dinner ta". Daddy was totally lost on what she said. She said she was speaking Cantonese, but I had no clue. When she showed me the electric tooth brush, then I figured out she meant "電牙刷 din6 ngaa4 caat3". Her pronunciation was way off. Both twins had a big laugh at daddy for not knowing their Cantonese.
We finished Sleep Beauty at bedtime. Joanne requested Little Mermaid from Disney's Princess Treasury for tomorrow.
Tuesday, Aug 19, 2003 (6y+13d)
The twins stayed home all day. Mommy said the twins had a great time playing "school" at home. That was a sign that they missed school. The timing was just right for school to start in two days.
Wednesday, Aug 20, 2003 (6y+14d)
Jasmine was showing off her missing tooth with a wide grin. Daddy said Jasmine had become a big girl when the baby teeth started to come off. She was bigger than Joanne. I asked her if she wanted to become the big sister to Joanne. Joanne heard that and strongly objected.Mommy took the twins to Great America. This would probably be the last for this season because school starts tomorrow and mommy hated the crowd in the theme park in weekends.
Joanne got a serious nose bleed at Great America. Mommy had to buy her a T-shirt to change. Jasmine also got a matching T-shirt.
Thursday, Aug 21, 2003 (6y+15d)
The twins were excited to start first grade. They had been looking forward to today all this week. Both daddy and mommy took them to school in the morning. They went into the classroom without hesitation. On the contrary, one of Jasmine classmate Ansel had to be dragged into the classroom by his daddy. In the evening, daddy asked the twins how they felt about the long school day. They told daddy that they didn't know school was longer in first grade.
Friday, Aug 22, 2003 (6y+16d)
Joanne and Nicholas were in the same class. During recess, they took a stroll around the playground. Joanne said they didn't say a word to each other, they just walked together. Jasmine was in the same class as Ashley. She liked Ashley because they had similar personality. Ashley also liked doing homework just like Jasmine did. Joanne ran away as soon as she saw Jasmine.Jasmine was the lucky girl, she got the better teacher than Joanne's this year and last year. Joanne got Ms Dong this year who was the teaching trainee in Jasmine's class last year. Joanne's teacher last year was also a newbie. Jasmine got Ms Huang and Ms Guo this year who were ranked the best teachers by the parents.
Grace invited our twins to swim in their pool after school. However, mommy declined the invitation because it was quite cold today. Instead, mommy invited them over for a brief gathering. They bought us some mooncakes for the upcoming Mid-Autumn festival.
Mommy bought new sneakers for the twins while they were in school. They had to return to the store because mommy underestimated the twins' size. The twins exchanged their sneakers for the right size after they came out from school.
We went to dinner with Annette's family in a new restaurant nearby. We complained to the restaurant owner that the combo dinner menu was misleading. It was written to imply more dishes than the dinner actually consisted of. The owner got mad and asked us not to return again in front of all the other customers. We would certainly take his advice. And I hoped all the customers who overheard the conversation would do the same too.
Jasmine asked daddy to read only one chapter tonight. They seems to be quite tired.
Saturday, Aug 23, 2003 (6y+17d)
We went to lunch with Denis' family. Denis arranged the lunch gathering because Joseanna was in town. We had dinner with Joseanna a few years ago in Tokyo when she expatriated there. She then expatriated to Singapore for two years. She planned to stayed here for couple of years before considering expatriation again. We talked about old times and realized how time flew fast. It had been almost 10 years that we knew each other. We went to visit Grandma Ling in the afternoon. Lucy and Hing invited us over for lunch, but we had to decline because we were fully booked today.
There was an annual Chinese street fair in Oakland Chinatown during the weekends. We took the twins to stroll through the stalls. We bought some Chinese concert DVDs and a children song karaoke DVD for the twins. We left after dinner.
We asked the twins to practice some piano before sending them to bed. The twins asked for only one chapter for bedtime story.
Sunday, Aug 24, 2003 (6y+18d)
We slept in on Sunday. We asked the twins the night before not to wake us in the morning. They had so much fun with themselves in the morning. They horsed around their room. They tucked themselves into their pillows to play kangaroos. The laughters woke us up.We had lunch with grandma Chui in the afternoon. It was a hot day. We went for some cold drinks after lunch. We then went to the local YMCA to inquire about their membership information. Since the twins loved swimming so much, mommy considered joining. The pool was under renovation starting today till the end of the month. We didn't want to make a decision yet because the pool was closed anyway.
We returned home and the twins practiced piano for awhile. Daddy set up the water slide on the front lawn where the ground was slightly sloped. The twins had more fun sliding there than at the backyard where the ground was level. After the twins took shower and dried themselves, we had a late dinner. Then it was about time to get ready for bed. The twins asked for two chapters for bedtime story.
Monday, Aug 25, 2003 (6y+19d)
The twins went to school as usual. They did a lot after school. They finished all their homework and practiced piano.Jasmine complained against mommy. She reported to daddy that mommy wouldn't let her wear the green underwear after shower. Joanne cut in and explained to daddy that mommy did the right thing because the underwear belonged to her. She further clarified that Auntie Ivy gave her the underwear when she stayed overnight with Amanda. Daddy agreed that Jasmine must let Joanne decide. Jasmine was unhappy and said Joanne should change her name to "Meany".
We finished the Little Mermaid tonight. After we finished two chapters, Jasmine suggested we should read the last chapter too because it only had two pages. After the story, they wanted to decide what to read tomorrow night. There were only two more stories left from the book Disney's Princess Treasury. Joanne wanted Snow White. Jasmine wanted Beauty and the Beast. Daddy suggested them to settle with Rock, Paper and Scissors. Jasmine won, but Joanne accused her for cheating by showing her hand late. Jasmine yielded without admitting guilt. She suggested that we picked the story with less chapters to go first. It turned out Beauty and the Beast was shorter by one chapter. Joanne was unhappy for not picking Snow White, but she needed to learn that she couldn't always get what she wanted.
Tuesday, Aug 26, 2003 (6y+20d)
The twins went to school as usual. After school, Jasmine asked mommy why she didn't ask what happened at school. When mommy asked the question, Jasmine started to spill her heart. She said she had a sad day. The kids made paper craft today in class. Jasmine make a doll. When the teacher picked up her work, the arm of the doll fell to the floor. The classmates laughed. Jasmine said tears rolled down her cheeks. As she told the story to mommy, she cried emotionally. Though she didn't cry in front of her class, she was really hurt for being laughed at.We went out for dinner at Outback steakhouse. Mommy asked Jasmine to tell daddy the story again. Joanne cut in to repeat the story she heard. When she said everyone in the class laughed at Jasmine, Jasmine corrected that Seline didn't laugh. Seline was her best friend. Daddy told Jasmine that the kids only laughed at the broken doll, not at her.
It was late when they got in bed. They agreed that we only read one chapter for bedtime story.
Wednesday, Aug 27, 2003 (6y+21d)
The twins went to school as usual. Mommy and several moms went to the opening ceremony of the IKEA store in the south bay. They went to abacus class after school. They did homework and practiced piano before they went to bed. Daddy suggested they help daddy to read the bedtime story because they didn't do their reading today yet. Joanne insisted that she would read her own book. She went downstairs to read to mommy. Daddy and Jasmine took turns to finish a chapter of the bedtime story. Joanne was mad at daddy for not letting her read. She wouldn't let daddy give her a goodnight kiss. The news said Mars is closest to Earth in 60000 years. When I went outside to look for Mars, I could only see an overcast sky.
Thursday, Aug 28, 2003 (6y+22d)
The twins went to school as usual. They had their piano class after school. The teacher reported the kids' progress to the parents. She said a lot about every kid. But she said only few words about the twins, "Joanne, Jasmine, very good. We need to make some arrangement after class." It turned out that the teacher wanted to promote the twins to the next level. Actually, the twins were the oldest in the class, because they started late. After the promotion, they would be at par.
Friday, Aug 29, 2003 (6y+23d)
The twins went to school as usual. Mommy said they had a great time playing in the house after they finished their homework. After daddy came home from work, we went to IKEA. We placed the twins in the Small-land. They enjoyed playing in the playground while daddy and mommy shopped around. We picked them up after an hour. We then had dinner at the cafeteria. Due to the grand opening, they were offering free kid's meal and one dessert at $0.25. We continued shopping and spent some time in line and loading the purchase onto the car. On the way home, the twins fell asleep in the car. Mommy stopped by Aunt Tina's place to drop off something and stopped by Debbie's house to pick up something. By the time we arrived home, it was a quarter past eleven. We put the twins in bed directly. Joanne woke up briefly to go to the bathroom. Jasmine decided not to get up.
Saturday, Aug 30, 2003 (6y+24d)
We went to lunch with CW's family. CW spent most of his time working in China. It was rare occasion to get together with him. After lunch, mommy offered to babysit Addison and Deana. CW and Bonnie went shopping. Mommy also picked up Annette. The kids had great time playing in the house. Towards the late afternoon, Annette and the twins were asked to do abacus homework and practice piano. Addison and Deana watched TV while the other three kids were busy. They were picked up by their parents before dinnertime.Mommy bought an unfinished wooden box from IKEA the other day. The twins spent some time in the backyard painting the box with some color stain in the afternoon. While they were busy, daddy pointed them to a couple of hummingbirds in the trees. Joanne told Jasmine the hummingbirds would sing like Winnie the Pooh: "Hmmmm... Hmmmmm..." :-)
We spent some time playing balls in the backyard. Jasmine didn't wear shoes. Mommy was mad to found Jasmine's stocking heavily stained with mud. The games were interrupted when dinner was ready. Joanne said she wanted to return to the games after dinner, but her request was declined. Mommy sent the twins to take a shower after dinner. They requested to soak in the bathtub instead. They pretended to be mermaids in the tub. They could barely recognize a human called daddy. For bedtime story, they asked for two chapters of Beauty and the Beast.
Sunday, Aug 31, 2003 (6y+25d)
We originally planned to go to Happy Hallow Zoo in San Jose with Aden's and Terence's families. However, the plan was cancelled because Aden had not recovered from jet lag yet. They just returned from Hong Kong a few days ago. We went to Great American with Terence's families instead. We left at around 2pm and went to lunch. The twin took a nap in the afternoon. We went to Hing's place for dinner. We watched a movie on DVD before we went home. The twins went straight to bed when we got home. They are willing to skip the bedtime story.
Monday, Sep 1, 2003 (6y+26d)
It was Labor Day holiday. No school for the kids. No work for daddy too.Mommy invited Kioko and her family over for lunch. Jim was busy with something else, so she didn't come. Miki was 10 year old and she had grown as tall as her mom. Her mom said Miki was at an age that she became very shy. JR had no trouble finding the toys he liked. He felt right at home. Minnie was a happy baby too. After lunch and some warm up time, the kids started to play together well. At the end of the day, Kioko had a hard time getting JR to leave. I had to tell JR that the car had left before he started running out the door.
The twins did some homework before dinner. We had the leftover from lunch as dinner. When the twins had their glass of milk before going to bed, Jasmine threw up. After we cleaned up the mess, we sent her to bed. She threw up three more times over the night. Despite the bucket we prepared her with, we still needed to change a few sets of bed sheets. Joanne was very helpful in fetching change of clothes for Jasmine and she helped daddy to change the sheets too. Though Joanne said that the smell of the puke made her sick at the stomach, but she didn't throw up. We had no idea what had gone wrong because we all ate the same food today. We were all fine except Jasmine. I asked her if she washed her hands before eating after playing in the backyard. But she didn't remember if she ate with dirty hands.
Tuesday, Sep 2, 2003 (6y+27d)
Jasmine seemed okay in the morning. The twins went to school as usual. When they arrived at the school, Joanne found out that she didn't wear her sneakers. She wore the slippers to school. She wanted mommy to take them back home to get her sneakers. She was willing to take the late pass. Of course mommy didn't want Jasmine to be late too. Joanne cried until mommy promised her the shoes before her playground time.Daddy interrupted Joanne's class to hand her a pair of sneakers. Joanne was smiling with a broad grin. She was surprised to see daddy.
Tuesday is a short school day. The twins went with mommy to shop at Costco after school. They bought the Lizzie McGuire Movie. Daddy usually buy only animation films for the twins. They watched the movie at Annette's home before. They watched the movie all over again today. Mommy said they sat through the whole movie at full attention.
Jasmine looked very tired at dinnertime. Daddy asked her to take it easy. But mommy wanted her to finish dinner and have a bowl of soup. It was a mistake. Moments later, Jasmine threw up the soup on the kitchen floor. We let her sleep on the sofa in a slanting position. We worried that she might puke again when lying down.
Jasmine was asleep on the soda, so it was Joanne's turn to read bed time story to daddy. We put Jasmine in bed after Joanne had fallen asleep because we didn't want Joanne to wake up Jasmine.
Joanne woke up in the middle of the night with a bleeding nose. It was hot today at over 100°F in the day time. The room was warm even at night. Joanne had bleeding nose easily on hot days.
Wednesday, Sep 3, 2003 (6y+28d)
