The twins are five and a third year old today. The twins went to school as usual. Mommy invited several families to our home for dinner. Elizabeth's family, Poon's family and our next door neighbor were among the guests. Our neighbor's kids Josephine and Daniel returned home after dinner because they expected some of their friends to visit. The others stayed around the dinner table to chat after dinner. The kids continued to play with each other. We didn't intervene until some kid slammed a door. Our neighbor left at around 11pm. Poon's family stayed rather late, probably close to midnight. Elizabeth's family stayed till almost 1 am because they asked for a house tour after other guests have left.
Jasmine stayed up to play with Lori and Harrison. She finally asked for Joanne. I told her that Joanne went to bed when she felt tired. Jasmine suddenly realized that she was very tired too. She ran to bed immediately. We planned to let the twins stay in bed as long as they needed the next morning. We didn't force them to go to bed. We just let nature take its course.

In the late morning, I sang the song "Happy birthday to Foti" in the twins' room. They got up immediately because they looked forward to their ex-classmate's 6-year-old birthday party. We didn't force ourselves to be punctual because our late party last night. We arrived to the party almost 40 minutes late. The clown was already doing magic when we got there. The twins didn't miss the face painting and balloon-sculpture. Joanne had two hearts painted on her face. Jasmine said she didn't want to paint her face. Both twins asked for a butterfly for their balloon sculpture. After the clown left, many kids gathered around the TV to watch the movie Spirit. Apparently, that movie appeals to many kids. The twins watched that movie more than any other cartoon in our collection. We bought the "Spirit" and "Ice Age" DVD around the same time. The twins watched Ice Age once, and that was it. They didn't seem to watch enough of Spirit. My theory was that the minimal dialogues probably made the movie more acceptable to kids. The main character Spirit in the movie was a horse. He didn't speak at all in the movie except an occasional narration to express his thought. Almost the entire movie was pure animated acting. After Spirit, Foti put on Toy Story 2. The kids gradually left. It was an indication on how attractive "Spirit" was in comparison.
The kids gathered in the backyard to play baseball. None of them played by the rule. They took turns to hit a tennis ball with a bat. Joanne was not interested in the game. Jasmine on the other hand didn't want to let go of her bat. She had trouble hitting the ball despite her enthusiasm. I worried that her perception of depth was impaired due to her cross-eye problem before. Though her eyes look straight, but according to the doctor, whether her brain combines the left and right image into a 3-D view is not guaranteed.
After the party, the twins said they were tired. It was expected given that they stayed up so late last night. We returned home to put the twins in bed for a nap. We put them in separate rooms to prevent them from chatting in bed. They fought for the air mattress. Since Joanne got in first, Jasmine had to sleep in her own bed. She cried because she didn't get what she wanted. There would be a crying baby either way. So I told Jasmine that she wouldn't make a difference by crying.
Daddy went out to do some shopping. Mommy said the twins didn't take their nap. They got out of bed soon after I left home.

We were expecting HungYip and Sabrina from New York today. However, we found out that Sabrina cancelled her trip at the last minute due to business reasons. HungYip was in town for a conference. But since he didn't contact us, we assume he was too busy with his business trip. Since they cancelled their visit, we decided not to stay home.Denis and Jane originally planned a birthday party for his son. But they cancelled it when the weather forecast said it would rain today. It didn't rain.
We went to Hing and Lucy's place at last minute notice. Mommy and Lucy went to Stanford shopping mall. The dads took the kids to the park. We had dinner together in the evening before we parted our ways.
Joanne told daddy that Jasmine was not sweet to her anymore. I explained to her that Jasmine stopped doing that because she was not receiving sweetness in return. For example, when Jasmine wanted the air mattress yesterday, Joanne refused to yield despite Jasmine's crying. Joanne said that Jasmine is supposed be sweet to her because she is her sister. I explained to her that the same reasoning should apply in both directions She refused to acknowledge that.

It rained as predicted though a day late. The twins went to school as usual. They were excited to get the chance to use their umbrella.Jasmine memorized the short Mandarin phrases taught in school. She recited it really quickly without reading from the paper. Joanne read phonetic symbols and built the pronunciation one syllable at a time. Joanne was mad at Jasmine because Jasmine read so fast that she could not catch up.

The twins went to school as usual. Tuesday school runs on an early schedule.Several classmates came to visit our twins. The moms had their culinary gathering on Tuesday. Mommy prepared braised beef with noodle. The other moms found it delicious.

The neighbor invited the twins to make Christmas cookies at their home. The twins went to school as usual afterwards.Jasmine was interested in playing the "FreeCell" game on the computer. She saw daddy playing the game a few days ago. She needed daddy to tell her which cards to move. She picked up the idea pretty fast. She might be able to play the game on her own pretty soon. She also liked to play the 3D pinball game on the computer. Joanne watched us play and then walked away. She was not interested.
Friday, Dec 13, 2002 (5y+4m+7d)
Today is Friday the thirteen. The twins hung the pillows on their bed headboard as saddles. They rode the headboard as horses. Joanne said she was riding "Rain" and Jasmine was riding "Spirit". The twins went to school as usual.

Severe winter storms hit the area really hard. It was pouring rain and the wind blew at high velocity. Part of the fence around our house was blown down.Mommy went out early in the morning to Macy's for its special pre-Christmas sales. She said everything was 40% off between 6am and noon. Many items were already on sale to begin with. So after the sales discount and the 40% early-bird discount, many items were at a real bargain.
Daddy and twins stayed in bed. The power was out at around 11am. The natural gas supply was intact. So we were still able to cook by lighting the stove with a match. The hot water boiler is powered by natural gas and it still functioned as normal. The furnace was powered by natural gas. But the blower was electric, so we lost central heat to the house. I burnt some wood in the fireplace to heat up the living area. But fireplace is much less effective in heating the whole house.
We invited grandma Chui over for lunch. We didn't change our plan despite the storm and power outage. With grandma watching the twins, daddy and mommy went to the bank. On the way we saw fallen trees around the city. In one parking lot, we saw a big tree crushed into 4 cars underneath. One of the crushed cars carried a New York license plate. I told my wife that the owner must be in very bad luck to park his car under that tree so far away from home.
We managed to let to twins watch a movie using the DVD player on the laptop computer. The battery was drained after one movie.
It got dark pretty early in wintertime. And with stormy sky, the inside of the house became very dark starting in mid afternoon. The twins had fun playing with the flashlights. They found the battery-powered lights they got from last Christmas. I installed some new batteries. The twins were carrying the light everywhere they went.
At around 6pm, we went to Valerie's birthday party. There were many kids in the party. The twins fit in right away. There were lighting and thunders from outside which blended in with the camera flashes went off inside the house. We left the party after the cake cutting. It was almost 11pm when we got home. The twins were already asleep. We just moved them into bed because we bathed them earlier in the afternoon. We sent them to the bathroom to empty their bladders and washed their faces before leaving the party. They were all ready for bed when we got home. The house was in total darkness due to the power outage. We won't be able to do much besides going to bed.
Sunday, Dec 15, 2002 (5y+4m+9d)
The house was cold in the morning because the furnace wouldn't work without electricity. Since the water heater still worked, we could still take a hot shower in the morning to warm up. We still didn't have electricity when we left the house. We went out for lunch. We headed to Sacramento after lunch. Betsy and Kenny were expecting a baby boy at the end of January. We wanted to visit them in Sacramento before the due day.
It was pouring rain along the way. Traffic flowed at speed limit due to the heavy rain. It was kind of uncommon in the Bay Area because almost everyone exceeded the speed limit. On a normal sunny day, people would drive at 75+ mph on the freeways. My cousin from Los Angeles said he believed the drivers in the Bay Area were crazy to ignore the speed limit by such a large margin. I told him that he probably was jealous because the freeways in LA were always jammed. There would never be a condition for anyone even to reach the speed limit.
The trip took two hours. We arrived at 4pm. We sat around to chat and waited for other guests. We put on a cartoon DVD on the TV for the twins so that they would not bother us. Ronald and Evon arrived next. SiuLing and her husband arrived later. We chatted till 6:30pm before we went to the restaurant for dinner. Cindy and Ray arrived late and they went to the restaurant directly.
When we arrived at the restaurant, Jasmine said she was not feeling well. She slept on daddy's lap until dinner started. We thought that she must have caught some bugs from other kids at the birthday party yesterday. One of the boys was coughing in everyone's face. His parents asked him to cover his mouth when coughing, but it was unreasonable to expect kids to follow instructions like that. We always think the best way to stop spreading germs to other kids is to keep the sick kids at home.
When dinner started, Jasmine said she felt better. She had a good appetite too. She finished half a braised squab. With her fingers still in her mouth, she asked for another half. There were many courses in the dinner. The twins filled up pretty fast. However, daddy kept asking Jasmine to try different dishes. Without keeping count, Jasmine ate quite a lot. Mommy took care of Joanne, so I didn't know how much Joanne had. It was almost 10pm when we left the restaurant. We took a 2-hour trip back home.
The twins played and sang along the way. They fell asleep in the last hour. When we got home it was almost midnight. The electricity was back on. We simply put the twins in bed because we got them all washed up before we left the restaurant.
After the twins were in bed, we found that our house was invaded by a colony of ants. They were all over the kitchen. Mommy and daddy spent the next hour wiping off the ants. While we were battling with the ant colony, Jasmine came downstairs crying in panic. I found her covered in her own puke. Her bed was covered with a stinky mess too. We cleaned her up and removed the soiled bed sheets.
She calmed down after daddy told her that it was okay. I asked her to sit upright in our bed while we were busy cleaning up. I gave her a bucket in case she needed to puke again. She was shivering in cold. So I tried to cover her with our comforter. Probably caused by the movement, she hurled another batch of stinking mess. Half landed in the bucket, half landed on our bed. We needed to follow up with more cleanups.
Jasmine was quite calm because we were handling the mess quite calmly too. I believed if we panicked, she would be scared by our reaction too. We gave her some warm water to warm her up. She later puked a few more times. We could see that her stomach was emptied because only water and some mucous came out at the end. We set up the air mattress next to our bed and let her spent the night next to us. It was 2am in the morning when we all got in bed.
When Jasmine said she was not feeling well before dinner, I should not let her eat so much. Also when we drove two hours home with full stomachs, we should not put them in bed right away. We should let them run around a little bit before going to bed. At hindsight, we could figure out what we did wrong. However, given the same situations again, we would not do it differently. At below 35 pounds, the twins were still under weight at age 5. When the twins had good appetite, we would never try to stop them from eating. When they were sound asleep, we would never think of waking them up. Assuming both twins ate roughly the same amount, and Joanne had no problem at all, Jasmine threw up probably due to some virus she caught from yesterday birthday party. It was a waste because the dinner was very delicious.
Monday, Dec 16, 2002 (5y+4m+10d)
Early in the morning, Joanne came to our bed. She told daddy in a concerned tone of voice that Jasmine was missing. I showed her Jasmine on the mattress next to us. I sent her back to her bed after explaining that Jasmine was sick last night.Everyone woke up late today because we stayed up late last night. Daddy went to work late also. Jasmine seemed fine in the morning. She even hopped up and down energetically on the air mattress. She asked us if she could sleep on the same spot forever. Of course the answer was no. She also told Joanne what happened to her last night.
The twins went to school as usual.
When daddy came home in the evening, the twins were chasing around the house in horseplay. There was absolutely no sign of sickness. Either Jasmine cleansed her system by throwing up everything yesterday, or she was not sick last night. Since she was asleep in the car with a full stomach, she might have motion sickness that caused her to puke.
Hing and Lucy stopped by with Terence after dinner. They brought us the Christmas gifts. The twins were eager to know what they got after the guests left. They asked mommy if they could open the gifts. Since we would be out of town in Christmas, mommy let the twins enjoy the Christmas atmosphere early.

Tuesday school runs on an early schedule. The twins went to school as usual. Mommy went to the plumbing supply store in San Francisco to replace a broken shower-head, which was still under warranty. She also went to Japan town for lunch. She came back just in time to pick up the twins after school.
Wednesday, Dec 18, 2002 (5y+4m+12d)
The twins went to school as usual. The twins joked that mommy was their stepmother. They said that when mommy was mad at them, she was as mean as Cinderella's stepmother was.

We left in the morning for Southern California. We originally planned to have lunch with my cousin in Monterey Park. However, the traffic on Highway 5 started to slow down once we passed the "grapevine". It was after 3pm when we got to Los Angeles. We decided to check in to the hotel in Anaheim first. After we settled down, we went back to visit my cousin Allen. The twins looked forward to see their cousin Amanda. My cousin told me that Amanda had been asking about our arrival since the morning. It was less than a month ago they visited us so the kids still remembered each other well. Andric was not too enthusiastic to see his cousins. Probably he still remembered from their previous visit that his father punished him after he pushed Jasmine on the floor. I asked Joanne to give her cousins a hug, which broke the ice. The cousins played together for a while before we went out for dinner. Allen bought us dinner at Black Angus Steakhouse. We returned to the hotel after we had dessert at Cold Stone Creamery.
Sunday, Dec 22 through Thursday, Dec 26, 2002 (5y+4m+16d)
We spent the next five days in Disneyland and California Adventure theme park. The theme parks offered a special deal to extend their 3-day park-hopper tickets to 5 days at no extra charge. The family of Jasmine's classmates Annette and the twins' classmates Michael and Katherine planned the same trip with us. Though the three families all traveled separately, we stayed in the same hotel and we walked to the theme parks together everyday. We played together in the parks most of the time except we took a short excursion on Monday to visit my friend Ricky and his family. The twins were happy to see Ricky's pug E.T. again. The pug was over 8 years old and she had lost most of her hearing. She became quite unresponsive when the twins played with her. Few years ago, Joanne loved to play with E.T. more than Jasmine did. However, in this visit Joanne cried after E.T. licked her face. She said it was too yucky and she did not like that.
The family of the twins' ex-classmate Rachel also took the same trip, but they stayed in a different hotel. Their family was all early birds and we couldn't keep up with their schedules. Our ex-neighbor Elizabeth learned from us about the special deal. Her family also took similar trip though their schedule started two days behind us. Their kids Lori and Harrison were older than our twins so we didn't arrange to play together despite we were in the same parks.
The twins said their favorite parts of the visit were the roller coasters, the parades, and the costume characters. They liked the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad ride so much that they rode the roller coasters 5 times. Michael and Katherine didn't enjoy the ride and their family gave their fast-passes to us for some extra rides. After the rides, Annette and the twins chanted "We want more! We want more!" In one of the rides, we were seated at the front of the roller coaster. The car went over a peak but didn't accelerate until the end of the train also passed the peak. The drag by the tail of the train gave the front riders an illusion that the roller coaster was moving slower. The kids changed their chant to say, "We want it faster! We want it faster!" By the law of physics, each car of the train moves together at the same speed. However the roller coaster seemed to run faster to the riders at the back. The difference was so obvious that the kids requested to always ride at the back of the coasters from that point on.
The twins also liked the Gadget's Go Coaster in Toon Town and Mulholland Madness in California Adventure. They also rode these coasters multiple times. We have not tried the California Screamin' because our 5-year-olds didn't meet the 48" height requirement. The twins often rode the coasters with their arms raised above their heads. Due to their petite size, the twins were tossed around inside the car like the dice when they refused to hold on to the handlebars.
Joanne enjoyed the nightly fireworks and wanted to watch more. However, Jasmine didn't want to see the fireworks again because of their loud noises. The twins liked the Disneyland parade more than the Electric Light parade in California Adventure, though I thought the latter was more beautiful.
The twins were well aware that the characters were wearing costumes. They even asked daddy how the persons inside could see through the costume. Yet, the twins collected autographs from the costumed characters and they wanted daddy to put their photos in the autograph book. The twins were scared of the characters in their previous trip to Disneyland. They conquered the fear by recognizing the characters are persons in costume. We believed it was a good tradeoff to let them spoil the imagination in order to cure their phobia.
The twins requested to ride "It's a small world" two times. Jasmine said the singing dolls were very pretty. Due to the season, Christmas songs were played instead of the original theme song. Joanne said it was not the same ride they went to when they were babies (34 month old to be exact). Joanne wanted daddy to take her to the same "It's a small world" ride that she remembered. She said she remembered riding a boat into a small cave where the "It's a small world" song was played. She even hummed the melody for daddy. When daddy said that was the same ride, she cried emotionally saying that daddy didn't understand her.
The twins were scared by the 3D shows. They cried in fear when the mice ran loose from the "Honey, I shrunk the audience!" show in Disneyland. We had to walk out in the middle of the show to calm them down. They were also scared by "It's Tough to Be a Bug!" in a Bug's Land of California Adventure. They ducked and buried their faces in our laps for most of the show. They loved the Aladdin shows in both Disneyland and California Adventure.
In addition to their favorites, the twins enjoyed many other rides too. They said they also liked the "Soaring over California" in California Adventure. They also enjoyed Sun Wheel, the Ferris wheel with some cars that would slide back and forth in swinging motion. We went back for the second ride on the last night of our trip to see the night scene from high up. When we were still at the top of the Ferris wheel, the twins heard the public announcement saying that the park was closed. Jasmine said with a worried tone that she didn't want to stay up in the air all night. She wanted to go back to the hotel. So we did. The California Adventure Park closed at 10pm, but Disneyland closed at midnight during the Christmas week. We could have returned to Disneyland for another two hours, but the kids were too tired to last till midnight. So we concluded the theme park visit.
Friday, Dec 27, 2002 (5y+4m+21d)
We checked out from the hotel. We told the twins that we were going home. The twins asked if we could take a few more roller coaster rides before we left. The three families stopped at Monterey Park for lunch. As mommy pulled the minivan out of the parking garage, she backed the side door into a pillar. We later found the damage cost over a thousand dollars. Though the damage can be claimed from insurance, we still have to pay the deductible. Besides the claim will raise our insurance premium for the next few years to come. So the cost eventual comes out from the same pocket. This added extra cost to the already expensive trip.
Despite the long ride, the twins were well entertained along the way. I mounted a laptop computer on the armrest of our minivan. I used an audiocassette adapter to connect the computer to the car stereo system. I used the computer as a DVD player to play the twins' favorite movies. (The twins' pick of DVDs were Spirit, Cinderella II, Nick Jr. Holiday, It's the Pied Piper, Charlie Brown, and Barbie as Rapunzel.)
We were home by 8:30pm.
Saturday, Dec 28, 2002 (5y+4m+22d)
We invited CW and Ken's family to our home for dinner. The twins played with Deanna and Michelle. The boys Steven, Michael and Addison played their video games and watched the Star Wars movie on DVD.

Monday, Dec 30, 2002 (5y+4m+24d)
We invited Annette's and Michael & Katherine's family to our home for dinner. They stayed till midnight before leaving. We found Joanne asleep in our bed after the guests left. The twins knew when to quit when they were tired. We didn't need to worry about them.
Tuesday, Dec 31, 2002 (5y+4m+25d)
We had lunch with Aunt Elaine and grandma Chui. They came over to our place after lunch. I showed them the videotapes from our Disneyland trip. They stayed for dinner before returning home.

Happy New Year!
We explained to the twins that the date changed to 1/1/2003 today. They understood why it was called a New Year.We left in the morning heading towards the mountains. The family of Rachel, one of the twins' ex-classmates, told us about a special deal at Circus Circus Hotel in Reno. The room only cost $22 for tonight and we could stay an extra night for free. That averaged to about $13 per night after tax. We took the opportunity to take the twins to the snow.
I asked the twins to pick their DVDs to watch on the trip. Jasmine picked the new purchase "Peter Pan" and "Lilo & Stitch" in addition to the same DVDs they picked in the recent Disneyland trip (Spirit, Cinderella II, Nick Jr. Holiday and It's the Pied Piper, Charlie Brown.) I asked Jasmine if she wanted to pick different DVDs than those she picked for last trip. I suggested Toy Story and Monsters Inc. She simply said no. For some reasons, these DVDs had special appeal to them. Joanne said she liked Mary (the mouse) in the Cinderella story.
We stopped in Sacramento for lunch. We bought some take out for dinner too. We arrived at Kingvale at around 2:30pm. Rachel's family was already playing snow tubing for 2 hours. Since only 90 minutes remained before closing time, we decided not to buy the 3-hour tickets. We let the twins take a ride on the mini-snowmobiles. They looked like little aliens when they wore the oversized helmets. They went around in circles for a few minutes. They also spent some time playing in the snow with Rachel and her brother Randy. We then headed for Reno.
When we arrived at the hotel, we ate the takeout food from lunch as a quick dinner. Mommy then went to the casino. Daddy took the twins to the Midway of the Circus Circus hotel. We played some games and the twins each won several stuffed animals. Some games were set up to give out prizes for all players. But the twins were lucky to win in several other games too. Since mommy told the twins that they had too many toys at home, the twins felt uneasy to win the toys. They told daddy that they didn't want the toys because mommy might be mad at them. They took their winnings only when daddy told them it was okay. I took the twins back to the room and went to bed early. Mommy stayed in the casino till 2am in the morning.
Thursday, Jan 2, 2003 (5y+4m+27d)
Today's date is 01/02/03 (according to US date format). We left Reno at 8:30am in the morning. We went to Northstar ski resort. We planned to let the twins take their first ski lesson at 10:00am. The traffic on Highway 267 was slow. It took much longer than we planned to get there. We arrived at Northstar shortly after 10:00am. So we changed our plan for the next lesson at 12:30pm. By the time we got the tickets and rental equipment, we didn't have much time left for lunch and the bathroom trips. The lesson lasted from 12:30 to 3pm. The twins complained that the lesson was too long despite they took a long break on the hills for some snacks and a snow fight with the teacher and the classmates. To us, we didn't get our money worth. We were sitting on the side to watch the lesson. We counted that the twins took about 7 trips down a slope less than 10 yards long throughout the whole afternoon. Since the lesson and equipment cost $69 per child, we computed that it averaged to a dollar a yard. They were taught the basic skill of duck walking and wedge stop. They didn't even teach them the proper way to get up after a fall. The lesson was designed as a baby sitting session instead of teaching the kids the techniques. We left the ski area before its closing time to avoid traffic. Despite the early departure, it still took us a long time to get back to Reno. We asked the twins to take a nap in the car. They woke up after we had carried them back to the hotel room. We then went downstairs to have dinner in the casino restaurants. Mommy's favorite restaurant Roxy Bistro didn't have a table for us until 8pm. So we had dinner at another restaurant instead. After dinner, we returned to Roxy for desserts. Mommy went to the casino. The twins and daddy stopped by the game room before returning to our room. They won some tickets from the game machines and they exchanged some toys with them. When we came back to our room, daddy prepared a tub of hot water. Daddy and the twins sat on the edge of the tub and dunked our tired feet into the hot water. The twins had quite a lot of fun with the water and we chatted while we relaxed our feet. We went to bed early when mommy returned from the casino.
Friday, Jan 3, 2003 (5y+4m+28d)
We checked out from the hotel. We had a big breakfast before leaving Reno. We stopped at Kingvale for three hours of snow tubing. Towards the last hour, the twins would rather play in the snow than tubing. Joanne wanted us to build her a Hello Kitty snow-cat. When we said we didn't know how to do it, she asked for an igloo. The twins helped daddy collect snow chunks for mommy. Mommy stacked the chunks into a snow fortress because she couldn't figure out how to close off the top of the dome shape without collapsing. Because the slope was on the shady side of the mountain, it became very cold in the late afternoon. We took a few more rides down the slope. We left before the closing time because it was getting too cold.We headed down the mountains at around 4pm. The traffic was slow to a stop when we reached Roseville at rush hour. It took us more than two hours to reach Sacramento. We stopped in Sacramento for dinner. It took another two hours to reach home after dinner. We were home before 10pm.
Saturday, Jan 4, 2003 (5y+4m+29d)
Daddy washed the mud off the minivan. Mommy took a short trip to the grocery store. The twins and daddy stayed home all day.
Sunday, Jan 5, 2003 (5y+4m+30d)
We slept in late in the morning. The twins came to our room several times to get our attention. We sent them off to play on their own so that we could get more sleep. We went shopping at Costco in the afternoon. We had dinner at the Cheesecake Factory restaurant. We left our names there at 5:30pm before going into the shopping mall and we got our table after 6:15pm. Though mommy and the twins had eaten there before, it was daddy's first time at the busy restaurant. We failed several times to get a table at dinnertime because the wait was usually 2 to 3 hours. We went early today and were able get a table in less than an hour. The twins ate a lot of bread before the dishes arrived, but they didn't eat much of the main courses. They said they were tired near the end of the meal. They fell asleep on the way home. We put them in bed early. They would need the extra sleep for tomorrow when they return to school after the two-week winter break.
Monday, Jan 6, 2003 (5y+5m)
The twins are 65 month old today.
