The twins are 58 month old today. Their noses were still a little stuffy. But they no longer had any fever. They went to school as usual. I asked them what they did in school. They said singing, drawing, playground but nothing new.The kids' room faces east, the twins complain that the sun gets into their eyes in the morning. Mommy replaced the venetian blinds in the kids' room with some opaque honeycomb shade. The room is very dark when the shade is down.
Joanne still wanted daddy to sleep on her air mattress.
Friday, Jun 7, 2002 (4y+10m+1d)
Jasmine woke up in the morning and told daddy that she got a good sleep because the sun no longer bothered her in the morning. The new shade really made a difference. I'd try to use that as an incentive to convince Joanne to return to her own bed. She had been sleeping on the air mattress for almost a week now.Mommy took the twins to their weekly ex-classmate gathering before school. They went to school as usual afterwards.
Mommy started Joanne with the INH treatment. Joanne had a positive reaction to her TB skin test two months ago. We started to worry every time she got sick. Taking the treatment is optional, but it let us stop worrying.
Mommy crushed the tablet into powder. Joanne didn't like the taste of the medicine. She spat it out, but she was willing to swallow it with water.

The twins' classmate Alisa and her mom Donna visited us. It was a reciprocal visit because the twins had visited Alisa's home twice and they insisted to invite her to our home in return. The twins played bubbles in the backyard with Alisa. They also showed Alisa their Hello Kitty computer game. Towards the end, the twins wanted to ride their bikes. I asked which twin was willing to lend a bike to Alisa. Both said no. Alisa was taller than the twins were and the twins' tricycle was too small for her. The twins just let their friend stand there to watch them ride the bikes. Alisa and her mom left soon after that. The twins were not a good host that made their guest feel welcome. We spent three hours in a kitchen design company to figure out how we could remodel our kitchen. The twins did their own drawing in the waiting room. They came to bother us several times, but given the length of time, they were very well behaved already.
We paid a visit to Grandma Chui and we dined out together. There were three large banquets in the restaurant. The twins enjoyed taking a peek at the brides and bride-mates when they walked by.
On our way home, we bought some Jell-O. We planned to mix Joanne's medication into it per the nurse's advice. With the Jell-O as incentive, Joanne took the medicine with no resistance before she devoured the dessert.
Daddy told Joanne I could not sleep in her bed every night and Jasmine also needed company. Joanne still refused to return to her own bed. She seemed to enjoy sleeping alone in her own room.

We had lunch with Winnie, Simon and Samantha. The kids were prepared with coloring pencils. They kept themselves entertained while the adults chatted over lunch. The twins borrowed some ideas from Samantha's drawings. We dropped off the twins at Grandma Ling's and went to see "Star Wars: Episode II". It was beneficial to both sides. The granny got to play with the grandkids. We got a day off to watch a movie.
We rented the "Harry Potter" movie and showed to the twins. They liked the movie but they were scared of the troll and the monsters in the movie. They sat close to daddy throughout the movie. Joanne got a bit impatient and asked when the movie would end. They managed to finish the movie. Over 150 minutes was quite an attention span for kids their age. They were exhausted and went to bed right after the movie.

The twins went to school as usual. There was a solar eclipse visible from Western United States starting at around 5pm. It would be too dangerous to let young kids view a solar eclipse; besides, the twins would be too young to understand what it is. Daddy's coworkers used a pinhole on cardboard to project the eclipsed image on a piece of paper. We also used a CD as sunglasses. The aluminum foil of the CD blocked off most of the sunlight, but it was still too bright for direct view. By 6:16pm, only a crescent is left. Since it was not a total eclipse, the sky was not dark. The light in the surrounding seemed dimmer, but that feeling could well be psychological.
Joanne took her medication with no problem at all. Mommy didn't even need to crush the tablet for her. Joanne just chewed and swallowed the tablet before eating her Jell-O. Jasmine got the same dessert even though she did not need to take the medication.
Joanne fell asleep on my lap while we watched TV. I put her back into her own bed. If she made her own choice, she would sleep on the air mattress again. Daddy was curious what her reaction would be in the morning.

Daddy left for work before the twins woke up. I have to wait till the evening to learn about Joanne's reaction. The twins went to school as usual. The twins' classmate Foti came to visit the twins after school. His two years old brother Visuli went into tantrum every five minutes. His mother Despina stopped everything to give him attention whenever he whined and nagged. Mommy advised her that such action and reaction feedback loop would condition the kid to manipulate the adults and take control of the parent-child interaction.
We give attention to the twins only when we see appropriate. We decide what they get. They can ask, but the final decision is always ours. If the twins nag and whine, we will scold them and give them a time-out. They know that the more they cry and whine, the less likely they will get want they nag for. They always get opposite result whenever they nag. They understand they get what they want only if they ask nicely and behave themselves. Over time, the twins learned what "NO" means. They may cry a little, but when they know the tears are wasted, they stop within minutes.
Our strategy worked since the twins were still infants. When the babies cried, we would check on them for any obvious problems such as wet diaper, fever etc. But we refrained from picking them up to sooth them when they cried. Anyway, it was impractical to pick up both twins when they cried at the same time.
They received a lot of hugs and kisses when they were in good mood. We basically severed the association between crying and holding. It is just natural animal behavioral conditioning that traps many parents in a vicious cycle of more attention resulting in more tantrums.
Mommy said when Joanne woke up this morning, she demanded to know why she was put in the wrong bed last night. When I talked to Joanne in the evening, I asked how she felt about sleeping in her own bed last night. She said she was angry because daddy didn't put her in the "bubble bed". She chose the "bubble bed" again for the night.

Mommy took the twins to a gathering in the park before going to school as usual. One of the twins' classmates Amy came to visit them after school. Joanne got an Eeyore toy from her McDonald's happy meal. But she lost it before dinner. She insisted to find it before going to bed. Daddy helped her look around the house before she settled with a substitute. (Her toy was found in the garden the next day.)Jasmine woke up in the middle of the night crying. She cried very sadly. When I asked her why she cried, she didn't respond. She only grabbed daddy for a long hug. She went back to sleep after I had given her a small towel to wipe her tears.
Thursday, Jun 13, 2002 (4y+10m+7d)
In the morning, when mommy asked Jasmine why she cried, she didn't remember a thing. She said we must have mistaken Joanne as her.The twins went to school as usual.
Friday, Jun 14, 2002 (4y+10m+8d)
The twins went to school as usual. As school projects, the twins brought home a Father's day card and several hand-made gifts. They each made a decorated paper heart with their own photo at the center. They also made a jar filled with colored sand.
Saturday, Jun 15, 2002 (4y+10m+9d)
Lucy and Terence visited us in the afternoon before they went to a wedding banquet.Daddy's teacher in college was in the area for the Usenix conference. I invited him and his coworker to our home for a barbecue dinner. We have not met in person since I graduated from college 21 years ago.
Sunday, Jun 16, 2002 (4y+10m+10d)
Aunt Tina, Cousin Natalie and Aunt Jun visited us in the afternoon. The twins were excited to show Cousin Natalie how they jumped from the dresser to the air mattress below. The only logical course of action for me was to rain on their parade. I had to deflate the air mattress before it got damaged. We went out for dinner with Grandma Chui and Aunt Elaine to celebrate father's day. Grandma Chui treated. We returned to grandma's place after dinner. Aunt Elaine showed the twins a music video for kids while we had some fruits as dessert. Joanne started to complain about being tired before dinner. But she managed to stay awake the whole time. Even after we returned home, she refused to go to bed right away.
Joanne requested daddy to inflate the air mattress for her. I told her it was about time she returned to her own bed every night. She made up all kind of excuses. She said the air mattress was more comfortable. She said her own bed made her itchy. Daddy said we had to save the air mattress for travel next week. Apparently, it was a good enough reason for her to stop nagging.

The twins went to school as usual.I bought a music CD with soothing tranquil music played in harp with sound of ocean surf and sea gull calls in the background. I put it in the kids' room for their nighttime music. Usually, the twins did not let us change the music easily. Over the past 4 years, we have only changed the music once. I didn't set my hope too high. Jasmine noticed the new music right away and she said it was beautiful. I was glad they accepted the music because I hoped the tranquil music would help them fall asleep faster.
Tuesday, Jun 18, 2002 (4y+10m+12d)
The twins went to school as usual.Jasmine cried in the middle of the night couple of times last week. But she refused to tell why she cried at the time. It was understandable that anyone would be confused after waking up from sleep. I picked a time when the twins were playing and wide-awake to ask them about their crying at night. Jasmine said she cried because her dream was not happy. But she couldn't tell me what upset her. I asked if the dream was scary or sad. She said it was sad. Joanne said she had a bad dream where Jasmine swung a chair at daddy's stomach. She cried because daddy was hurt. I was surprised that Joanne would have such violent dreams.
Wednesday, Jun 19, 2002 (4y+10m+13d)
Daddy went to work before the twins woke up. Joanne cried when she missed daddy after she woke up. Mommy let the twins call daddy at work. I told them that they needed to get up early if they want to kiss daddy goodbye in the morning.Jasmine went to see her eye doctor. It was the second checkup since her eye surgery. Jasmine refused to wear her glasses since her surgery. We didn't force her because we knew the current prescription of the lens was not appropriate and was causing her astigmatism in the first place. However, the doctor said she must wear the glasses to correct her vision or her cross-eyes may come back. We would get her glasses with the new prescription before we force them on her. The doctor said Jasmine might need the glasses for the rest of her life. It is not good news.
The twins went to school as usual.
Thursday, Jun 20, 2002 (4y+10m+14d)
There was a traffic accident about two exits on the highway from the kids' school. A chemical truck loaded with nitric acid overturned on the highway. Portion of the highway was closed due to the cleanup effort. Mommy was concerned that the toxic fume may be blown to the school area. We decided to let the twins go to school as usual. If the school was not evacuated, it was probably safe.Jasmine cried easily recently. Whenever we scolded her or when we gave her an angry look, she would cry sadly. That indicated that she was very sensitive to our disapproval and she behaved accordingly. Joanne was remorseless even if we punished her. She would cry if she didn't get what she wanted, not because of our disapproval.
It would be last day of school tomorrow. It would be the clown day. Joanne put several stickers on her face and said she were a clown. She refused to wash her face because of the stickers. Mommy forced her to because she could not go to bed with the stickers on her face.
Friday, Jun 21, 2002 (4y+10m+15d)
Today is the last day of school before the summer break. It is the school's tradition that all the teachers will dress up as clowns. The boys were asked to dress up as clowns also and the girls were to dress up as ballerinas. Joanne requested to wear her leotard and tutu since last night. Of course mommy wouldn't let her until the morning. The school rented a jumping pad in the playground. The twins said they had fun jumping on it. School cut short today, not much teaching was done.
Saturday, Jun 22, 2002 (4y+10m+16d)
We took off at 7am heading to Southern California for a weeklong vacation. We made couple of stops along the highway. The twins took a short nap when the long journey became boring. We arrived at San Gabriel at 12:30pm. We had lunch with Pat and her two years old Rachel. Rachel was a quiet baby who didn't interrupted our conversation. We then visited my Cousin Allen. We crashed into a birthday party my cousin threw for a friend of his. His son Andric played with other kids in the party. But his daughter Amanda played with the twins right away. She helped the twins put couple of strands of beads on their hair. Joanne wore those beads for the rest of the week. Jasmine got rid of them on the first night. We left the party at 5:30pm and arrived at San Diego around 9pm. The trip was pretty smooth except for the traffic jams when we entered and left the LA metropolitan area.
Sunday, Jun 23, 2002 (4y+10m+17d)
We went to San Diego Zoo. We rendezvoused with Foti's family at the zoo. The cellular phones helped us get together without much trouble. Actually several of the twins' classmates were in the area due to the school break. Rachel, Amy and Foti all came to San Diego for vacation. Mommy gave our schedule to Foti's parents and they decided to match their itinerary with ours so the kids could play together. Grace decided to take Rachel to Disneyland first, so they won't come along with us.The highlights of the zoo visit were the hippopotamus and polar bear exhibit. The mother and child hippos were standing under water just next to the tank's window. The kids could come to within inches from the faces of the huge animals only separated by the glass pane. The animal rose to the surface for air once in a while, so there were a lot of actions for the excited kids to watch.
It was feeding time when we got to the polar bear exhibit. The bears dived into the pool to fetch the food. The kids could observe the playful underwater activity through the tank's window.
The twins also enjoyed the patting zoo and riding the Skyfari aerial tram over the zoo.
The twins were so obsessed with swimming that they kept asking when we would go back to the hotel. They rather swim than see the animals. Since I saw that the "nighttime zoo" was advertised as a summer feature, I thought we could come back after a swim. We parted with Foti's family and returned to the hotel to swim during the hot afternoon. We returned to the zoo at around 6pm after the swim. We took the bus tour around the zoo. Joanne fell asleep in the middle of it. On afterthought, we should have let the twins take a nap before returning to the zoo at night.
Mommy was in a bad mood because we ran around between the hotel and the zoo but the twins were not very enthusiastic about the visit. We returned to hotel and mommy went to bed early. At this time Joanne woke up and asked why we were no longer on the bus. The twins played noisily in the hotel room that put mommy in a worse mood. Everyone went to bed after mommy scolded the twins for disturbing her sleep. We never experienced what it was like to visit the zoo at night.
Monday, Jun 24, 2002 (4y+10m+18d)
We went to Seaworld after we had breakfast. Foti's family was there already. They rented a recreation vehicle for the week. The beds, kitchen and bathroom go wherever the car goes. It was very convenient to travel with a RV especially with small kids. The kids enjoyed the Shamu (Orca) show in the morning. They had a good laugh when they saw the killer whales splashed at the people sitting at the front. They had a great time playing in the wet play area after changing into their swimwear. They were shivering when they decided to quit. The other reason they stopped was because they slipped several times inside the wet play structure. We were well prepared with towels and dry clothes when they came out. We moved on to more shows after we dried them.
In the late afternoon, we went to see the dolphin show. Jasmine and Foti said they wanted to get wet and decided to sit in the soak zone. We sat a few rows behind them even though we still had a chance to get wet. When the pilot whales and the dolphins were splashing at the audience, the two kids ran to us. They were wet but not soaked.
Mommy wanted to have something to eat, while Foti's family wanted to skip dinner to catch the last Shamu show. Foti's family decided to stay for the fireworks show at the end, while the twins said they were scared of fireworks. Joanne still remembered how scared she was when she watched the fireworks at Disneyland a few years ago. Since Foti's family and we had slightly different plans about dinner and the fireworks show, so we parted. After dinner, we were just in time to catch the Shamu show.
On the way out of the park, we saw the twins' classmate Amy and her family. We chatted a bit before heading to the car in the parking lot. As we climbed on the car, the fireworks started. The twins sat at the front to watch the fireworks through the windshield. With all the windows closed, the explosive noise of the fireworks was not scary. The twins liked it so much that they wanted more. We promised that they would see more fireworks on the Independence Day next week. It was after 10pm when we left for the hotel.
We found out later that Foti's two years old brother was scared of the loud noises from the fireworks too. We told his parents about Joanne's fireworks phobia resulted from her Disneyland experience. But they thought their son could handle it differently.

We went to La Jolla in the morning looking for a beach suitable for children. A lifeguard on one of the surfer's beaches pointed us to La Jolla Shore beach. We had breakfast at an IHOP restaurant before going to the beach. The La Jolla shore beach has a very gently sloping shore. We saw some people standing in water waist deep 30 yards from the shore. The water was cool. Under bright sunshine, the water temperature was not a problem.
The ocean waves were lapping on the sand. We held the twins' hands and walked 10 yards into the water. The water was knee deep for us, but about waist deep for the twins. The wave reached neck level for the twins from time to time. They enjoyed the excitement of the ocean waves pushing them around. They also ran in the water screaming in joy when the waves chased them up the shore. A lifeguard came to us and advised the children to move closer to the lifeguard tower at the other end of the beach or refrain from wading deeper than knee deep. Since the area in front of the lifeguard tower was very crowded, we decided to just let the twins play in swallow water.
When the waves receded, tiny clams were exposed and rolling down the sandy shore. The twins collected a cupful of clams. The twins said they wanted to collect the seashells. Daddy plied open one of the clams to show the twins that the clams were alive. The clams would rot if we took them home. The twins agreed to throw their collection away. Daddy gutted and washed a dozen clams or so to save the shells for the twins in a zip-lock bag.
When the twins started to shiver, we rinsed them and returned to the hotel. The twins still wanted to swim in the pool. But they started to shiver again after a few minutes in the water. We returned to our hotel room and washed up thoroughly.
We went to Horton Plaza in downtown San Diego to kill time. When it was dinnertime we went to Ruth's Chris Steak House for a very nice beef steak dinner.
Foti's family didn't join us in our activities. They would like to join us for dinner. But when they called the restaurant, they were told that parking for the RV was very hard to find. They later told us that they enjoyed a very relaxing day doing nothing.
Wednesday, Jun 26, 2002 (4y+10m+20d)
We went to LEGOLAND in Carlsbad, which is about 30 minutes north of San Diego. We picked today to visit LEGOLAND because the park was on our way back.We rendezvoused with Foti's family in LEGOLAND. It was their first visit, but our third. The kids were excited about the rides. Foti's parents were amazed by the miniature world built of LEGO blocks.
Near late afternoon, Jasmine fell and hurt her nose. She got abrasion on her nose. We called her Jasmine the red nose reindeer and she laughed. She later told us that Foti pushed her before she fell down.
The twins were not tall enough to ride the roller coasters last year. They tried them for the first time. They loved "The Dragon" roller coaster but were scared by the steep drop in the LEGO test track ride. They asked to do it again, but Foti said he did not like the rides so we moved on to other less exciting rides. At the end of the day, we parted with Foti's family. They would stay longer in San Diego area while we went north to Irvine.
We arrived at my friend's home in Irvine after 9pm. The twins fell asleep on the way, but they woke up to play with ET (the pug). However, ET was not very playful.
Thursday, Jun 27, 2002 (4y+10m+21d)
Jasmine's abrasion wound on her nose had turned in a dark brown scab. The twins swam in the pool in the morning. Mommy and Kathy went shopping at South Coast Plaza in the afternoon. I took them to see the movie "Lilo and Stitch" at Metro Pointe across from the mall. After the movie, we took a long walk back to South Coast Plaza to rendezvous with mommy. Mommy told us to meet at FAO Schwartz. The twins were disappointed to find the toy store closed since last Christmas. They enjoyed couple of rides on the carousel inside the mall.We had Korean BBQ for dinner. The twins fell asleep when we arrived at the restaurant. We carried them in and let them sleep on the chairs. They didn't wake up until we finished dinner.
Friday, Jun 28, 2002 (4y+10m+22d)
The twins swam in their pool in the morning and again in the afternoon. They didn't want to come out of the water. But we forced them to when they start shivering. We had pizza in the afternoon. We just lay around all day to relax. Mommy watched a 12 episode Korean drama series on VCD within the past three days. We had some Taiwanese style noodles for dinner.
Saturday, Jun 29, 2002 (4y+10m+23d)
We left Irvine at around 10:30am. There was a stop-and-go traffic jam on highway 5 entering LA. I guessed it was typical on a Saturday morning. But we wondered how regular rush hour commuting would be like in LA on a weekday. We arrived at Monterey Park at 12:30pm. We had lunch with my Cousin Allen's family. The twins nagged to swim with their Cousins Amanda and Andric after lunch. Joanne took off her buoy to use an inflatable kickboard. When she was kicking around, the kickboard flop over and she dropped underwater. Her Cousin Amanda was nearby and grabbed her out of the water within two seconds. I saw it happened, but by the time I got there, Joanne was already saved. If Amanda were not around at the time, Joanne would have swallowed a stomach-full of water before I could get to her. Joanne was choked by water and was shaken a little. She returned to the pool right away after she caught her breath.
The twins rode their cousins' KettCar and motorized toy vehicles while their cousins rode on their bikes. They got a lot of exercise before we left at 5:30pm. We asked the twins to take a nap when we were on the way. They woke up at 8:30pm and stayed up till we got home at 11pm sharp. They sang to entertain us on the way.
Sunday, Jun 30, 2002 (4y+10m+24d)
We slept in till 10am. We had lunch with Grandma Chui. It was a hot day at home. It felt hotter than San Diego and Irvine where the sea breeze kept us cool through out the trip. We stayed home after lunch to avoid the heat and headache. In the late afternoon, the twins played with a sprinkler on the lawn until they started to shiver from the cold water. We put them in the bathtub to warm them up afterwards. We had a late dinner. The twins were sent to bed early right after dinner.
Monday, Jul 1, 2002 (4y+10m+25d)
The twins started to attend summer school 4 days a week at a new campus. They fitted in right away. They loved the bigger playground at the new campus. For the past couple months after we moved, mommy had to drive a long way back to the old school from our new home. Mommy was glad that she didn't need to commute anymore.Mommy took the twins to a swim class in the afternoon. Sharleen's neighbor was giving swim classes in the pool at home. The instructor Matt goes to college now and he was a champion in swimming.
The twins said they liked their swim teacher. They were willing to duck under water and blow bubbles in the first lesson. They loved it so much that they repeated that in the bathtub after they got home. I had tried to teach them to blow bubbles under water before, but they never listened to my instructions. Somehow the handsome instructors had his charm to make the girls do all the tricks.
Jasmine's scab on her nose fell off when she wiped her face frequently during the swim class. She still got a pink spot on her nose. We called her Jasmine the red nose reindeer again.
Tuesday, Jul 2, 2002 (4y+10m+26d)
The twins went to school as usual. Matt cancelled the swim class because he was tied up at school. The twins were disappointed. Mommy took them to Lillian's pool instead. Both Lillian and mommy became nervous when the twins started to swim in different directions. Lillian cannot swim. Mommy alone wouldn't be able to help both girls at different ends of the pool. Mommy was mad at the twins for not listening to her.
Wednesday, Jul 3, 2002 (4y+10m+27d)
July 3rd is Jasmin day in Hungary according to my friend there. The twins went to school as usual. There was no swim class today. Matt had to prepare for his test at school.
Mommy took the twins to shop for a new dress for a wedding this weekend. The store only carried one dress in each size. Mommy had to buy the dresses in two different sizes. Joanne took a size 4 and Jasmine took a size 6, which was a bit too big.
The twins were so excited about the dresses that they wore them all night. Daddy had to work overtime. The twins insisted to stay up to wait for daddy to come home. When daddy got home, the twins showed off their pretty dresses. Jasmine was so exhausted that she fell asleep on the couch right after the fashion show. I had to change her and carried her to bed.
Thursday, Jul 4, 2002 (4y+10m+28d)
It was Independence Day holiday. Happy 226th birthday to the USA.Eric invited us to a barbecue party at his home in San Ramon. Pow's, Alan's and Eric's brother's family were also invited. There were more than 10 kids from 5 families in the party. The youngest was Pow's at a few months old. The oldest was Eric's nephew at around 12 years old.
We all went to the community pool to swim. It was a hot but windy day. The water was quite cold and the twins had to come out of water when they started to shiver.
We then returned to his home to enjoy an early dinner. After dinner, the kids rode their bikes to a school playground nearby. Some kids played soccer and some played basketball. Then all the kids got together to play baseball. The twins also participated in the game by hitting the ball from a tee. The twins played the game for the first time and they didn't know the game. It was funny when they ran in random directions after hitting the ball. Everyone was yelling direction to them, but they were totally lost.
We left the playground when the sun started to set and the wind was getting cold. We returned to Eric's home to get warm and let the kids play indoors. When it was about time, we drove to the edge of a golf course nearby to wait for the fireworks. The golf course provided a wide-open unobstructed view to the fireworks in the San Ramon central park about 5 miles away. The twins liked the fireworks. But they complained that it was not loud enough. The twins played hard all day. They were so tired that they fell asleep on the way home.
Friday, Jul 5, 2002 (4y+10m+29d)
The twin had no school on Friday. They went to their second swim lesson. They could hold their breath and kick a few feet to the instructor. They were so proud of what they did in class that they wanted daddy to come along to watch them swim. When daddy told them I had to go to work to earn money to pay for their swim lessons, they settled for videotaping the lesson for daddy.Henry and Sherry invited us to dinner and an evening at their hot tub. We had dinner by the grill in their backyard while overlooking the East Bay at sunset. After dinner, we soaked in their hot tub while enjoying the views and stars in twilight. The twins were switching between the swimming pool and the Jacuzzi. Towards the end, they stayed in the hot tub when the pool became too cold after dark. Henry said that two-year-old Aden had not used the hot tub. He seemed to enjoy it too especially when he saw the two bigger girls having so much fun.
