The twins are 50 month old today. It was a rather chilly day.Mommy originally planned to take the twins to Paramount's Great America because it was close to the end of season and Melinda wanted to take Alan there too. However, mommy got a minor sore throat, so she told Melinda to go without them.
We picked up the twins from Aunt Tina after lunch. We stayed there for a while until Aunt Tina left for the airport to pick up Uncle Ivan. The twins wanted to see Hello Kitty. Hence we stopped by the mall and fulfilled their crave. As soon as the twins walked into the Sanrio store, Joanne asked mommy "我叻唔叻? (Am I smart?)" Trying not to hurt the kid's self-esteem, mommy casually replied "Yes" without knowing what would follow. Joanne immediately said "叻就獎粒糖啦! (If I am smart, award me a candy!) Mommy was cornered and the twins each got a Kerokerokeropi lollipop.
Before we went home, we stopped by a restaurant for an afternoon snack. The twins with the lollipop still in their mouths said they were not hungry and didn't want to eat anything. Mommy told them that they still had to watch us eat. Daddy ordered a banana crepe. The twins devoured the whole thing without leaving a bite for daddy.
The twins didn't take their afternoon nap. The twins were sent to bed early because Aunt Tina said they got up very early in the morning.

The day was warmer than yesterday. Mommy took the twins to Paramount's Great America to see Blue in the morning. Daddy stayed in bed the entire morning because I didn't have a season ticket. I thought Blue's Clues was a three-times-a-day stage show like the other shows at the amusement park. However, the twins later told me that it was a small puppet that came out to meet the kids. They said it was like the hand puppets that they played in the toy stores. No one can fool these kids anymore. Sophistication and innocence don't coexist. Knowledge seemed to spoil imagination in this situation. The twins said they liked to pat the puppet anyway. Of course, the twins wouldn't miss the swing and roller coaster rides. They were back home at around 1pm.They were quite exhausted from the excursion because they got up very early this morning. They took a long afternoon nap. Aunt Tina and Cousin Natalie stopped by and stayed until dinnertime.
Daddy spent some time scanning the twins' artwork into our on-line album. Most of the work posted was done by Joanne because Jasmine's art was just doodling and not really presentable. When Joanne was concentrating in drawing pictures, Jasmine was usually dribbling her favorite ball. Jasmine had a tendency to shy away from activities that Joanne was good at. That was one reason why we thought it would be better to separate the twins in school so that they each can develop their own personality and skills without looking up to each other.
Sometimes I feel guilty that Jasmine was not mentioned in this journal as much as Joanne was. Jasmine is coyer and more reserved, and hence she has fewer memorable moments than Joanne does. She is a very nice kid, less of a troublemaker than Joanne is. She is mommy's little helper as she sometimes scolded Joanne for not following mommy's house rules. She sometimes just speaks and acts like a serious little adult. We love them both equally.

It is Columbus Day holiday. No school for the twins. Daddy still needed to go to work though.Mommy took the twins to a pumpkin patch close to their school. Melinda, Michelle and their kids joined them there. The kids had fun playing in the pumpkin patch. Mommy said there was a tunnel formed by stacked bales of hay. The kids enjoyed going in and out of the tunnel.
At bedtime, Jasmine came to us and complained that she couldn't sleep because Joanne wouldn't stop talking. I asked Joanne whom she was talking to. She said she was talking to her friend. I asked for more information about this friend. She said her name is Prianca. She is five years old. She goes to Challenger School. Neither mommy nor Jasmine knows this girl. I said I have only heard of Bianca. Joanne confirmed that Prianca spelled with a P. Jasmine also said she has a friend called Mango. Mango came to existence shortly after Cassy. Mango is also five years old. We already knew about Cassy and Mango, now Joanne got another imaginary friend. This is spooky.

The twins went to school as usual.Joanne reported to daddy that she bumped her temple on the corner of the bathroom counter. On further investigation, she admitted that it happened when she was fighting with Jasmine for a tube of toothpaste. Daddy told her that she could only blame herself.

Today is the 90th anniversary of the Chinese revolution that overthrew the Qing Dynasty. Taiwan celebrated it as the 90th birthday of the Republic of China. But Mainland China celebrated it as the 90th anniversary of the revolution. The twins went to school as usual. They attended the dance class after school. Joanne jumped around and fell on the street. She got a tiny scratch on her elbow. They were exhausted and fell asleep on the way home. After dinner, Jasmine wanted to work on the 150 piece Pokemon jigsaw puzzle. She invited Joanne and daddy to help. I guessed she knew she could not finish it without help. Daddy helped her to sort the pieces by color. Jasmine put the puzzle together. Joanne helped only a few pieces, but she was eager to disassemble it before they went to bed.
For a while, the twins wanted to ride on my shoulder to their room every night. Recently, they liked daddy to swing them up and down on the way to their room. They wanted to swing high before landing on their beds. All the swinging was taking a toll on daddy's lower back.
Thursday, Oct 11, 2001 (4y+2m+5d)
The twins used to watch Teletubies on PBS before switching to Nick Jr. for Blue's Clues. In the past few days, they wanted to watch Franklin (the animated turtle) on Nick Jr. right before Blue's Clues.Mommy planned to take the twins to visit Christen (an ex-classmate of the twins) before going to school. Joanne and Jasmine said they'd never been to Christen's home before. Daddy asked Joanne about Cassy's and Prianca's home. Joanne said they live far away, and we cannot visit their home. Jasmine said we don't need to visit Mango, because she is right here next to her. Mango sleeps on the same bed with her at night too.
The twins went to school as usual. Mommy dropped the twins off at Elizabeth's home after school so that she could go out to dine with the moms tonight. The mothers in the mommy club (including Melinda, Debbie, Michelle et. al.) decided that they needed a break occasionally and hence a dinner gathering. Daddy picked up the twins after work. We all had dinner at Elizabeth's before returning home. The twins didn't eat much. Jasmine nagged to leave right after dinner. Joanne wanted to have Jell-O, but Jasmine wanted to leave right away. The twins had Jell-O after we arrived home. They worked on their jigsaw puzzles for a while. Mommy didn't return home until almost 11pm.
Friday, Oct 12, 2001 (4y+2m+6d)
Daddy went to work early before the twins got up. I have nothing to write about until I find out what they did today. They went to school as usual.
I was watching TV and Joanne was making a ponytail with her hair right in front of me. I noticed that she put the rubber band on her wrist first. Then she collected the hair into a ponytail and held it with the hand that had the rubber band. She used the other hand to pull the rubber band from the wrist over to the ponytail. I said it was a smart way to handle the rubber band. I looked to mommy, she said she didn't teach her that. I asked Joanne, she said Cassy taught her how to do the ponytail. Cassy seemed to be realer than just imaginary.
While we were on the topics of their imaginary friends, Jasmine clarified that Mango was a boy, not a girl. However, Jasmine called herself a boy too, so Mango's gender was still unclear. Jasmine laughed that Mango's name sounded like the fruit.
The twins said Cassy and Mango both have babies. The babies came from their belly buttons. Cassy's baby is called Jer-ma-li (Joanne confirmed that the name is not Jeremy). The twins called their dolls as babies, so I guess Cassy and Mango (being only 5 years old) have dolls too.
Saturday, Oct 13, 2001 (4y+2m+7d)
It was an unusually hot day. The temperature reached in the 90s and 80s. The twins wanted to swim in the pool because it was hot. We went to the pool in the afternoon. The pool was empty for an obvious reason. The water was coooooold! The twins went in the water with no hesitation. They also insisted daddy to perform a dive for them. I swam two laps and couldn't stand the coldness. When I came out of the water, the air was warm and comfortable in comparison. The twins went between the pool and the hot tub several times. They threw their hats into the pool, so that they could swim to them and retrieve them. (Note: they still swam with flotation devices.) We left when their fingers looked like wrinkled prunes.
Sunday, Oct 14, 2001 (4y+2m+8d)
We went out to have lunch with Wil'n'Lil and CW's family. The twins played with Deanna (7) and Addison (11) while the adults chatted and enjoyed lunch. We gave the twins some dim sum and later found that it was spicy hot. Joanne said it burned her tongue. I offered to take the spicy food away. But both the twins insisted they loved it because it was tasty. They took a sip of water between bites. The twins saw a TV commercial for the Barbie in the Nutcracker video in the morning. They wanted it. We went to Costco after lunch and bought them a copy. They watched half the video before they took their afternoon nap. The video was unexpectedly good. It was done by computer animation with motion capturing technology from real ballet dancers. So the movement of the animated characters looks very realistic. The only caveat is that the lighting of the graphic rendering is not very good. Anyway, it is still an excellent movie for children and may become another classic for the holiday seasons in the years to come.
In the middle of the night, Joanne came to our room with blood all over her clothes. She had a serious case of nosebleed. She was scared, as were we due to the amount of blood on her. However, as soon as we put a cold wet towel on her forehead, the bleeding stopped. After the bleeding stopped, she was very calm and let us change her into clean clothes.
Joanne was prone to have nosebleed, more so than Jasmine. We believed it was because she picked her nose and might have punctured some membranes in her nose. One reason might be the temperature, it was a hot day today, their room was hot even at night. Another reason was the spicy hot food she had during lunch. According to Chinese food therapy theories, chili pepper is known to be on the extreme yang side of the yin-yang scale of food. Yang type food often leads to nosebleed and dryness of mouth and skins.

According to the news, it was Winnie the Pooh's 75th birthday today. The twins didn't know about it. Or else they may ask for a birthday cake. :-)The twins went to school as usual.
Mommy called me at work. The twins sang their school song in its entirety. They had sung the chorus often in the past. Singing all the lyrics was unprecedented. They sang the song while daddy listened on the phone.
The twins' memory is pretty good. They could recite the pledge to allegiance without our help. Given that they do it everyday in school, it may be something as expected.
Tuesday, Oct 16, 2001 (4y+2m+10d)
The twins went to school as usual. When daddy peeled some oranges after dinner, Jasmine wanted to peel one too. She took a very long time because her fingers were small and could only pulled a small piece off at a time. She had perseverance and wouldn't give up until it was all done. She proudly gave the peeled orange to mommy. Joanne wanted to do the same too. The twins then each peeled another orange.
Wednesday, Oct 17, 2001 (4y+2m+11d)
The twins went to school as usual. The twins also went to the dance class after school. They went to bed early before daddy came home. They were still awake when daddy gave them a goodnight kiss.
Thursday, Oct 18, 2001 (4y+2m+12d)
Mommy said Joanne has a good friend at school whom she played with often. Her name is Alisa. Jasmine also has a good friend at school called Amy. These are real girls unlike Cassy and Mango.Mommy took the twins to the Disney's store to exchange the Halloween costumes again. Mommy struggled to decide if "trick or treat" is a good thing to do given the current anthrax attacks on America. What kind of costume to buy depends on whether the costumes would be used indoors or outdoors or nowhere at all. The twins had the Sleeping Beauty and the Little Mermaid dress before the September 11 attack. Mommy changed them to the warmer Piglet and Tigger's outfit because the twins might have to do outdoors "trick or treating" this year. She didn't plan to take the twins to the mall on Halloween this year. Now after the anthrax attacks, mommy probably would only let them "trick or treat" at school. So in-doors costumes are in again.
Before the twins went to school, mommy took them to the playground in the park where Christen (their ex-classmate) and her mom would meet them.
After school, mommy took them to the Picture People store in the mall. She got a coupon for some free pictures. The twins put on the new costumes they got today and had some Halloween photos taken in the studio.
At dinnertime, Joanne finished early. That made mommy and daddy very happy. The twins often dragged on, in the worst case, took over an hour to finish dinner. As a stimulus for Jasmine to also hurry up, daddy asked Joanne to show her empty bowl to Jasmine. Jasmine acted as if Joanne was invisible. Joanne called Jasmine's name several times getting no response at all. When daddy asked why Jasmine was not responding to Joanne, she replied, "I am busy, don't bother me". I believe this is called "selective listening".
Friday, Oct 19, 2001 (4y+2m+13d)
The twins went to school as usual.Joanne got a runny nose. She must have caught some bug from school.
Saturday, Oct 20, 2001 (4y+2m+14d)
Due to Joanne's runny nose, we stayed home all day. Aunt Jun came visit. She washed her car on our driveway. The twins tried to help for a while.
Sunday, Oct 21, 2001 (4y+2m+15d)
Mommy took the twins to Kevin's birthday party. Since not many dads were going to attend this party, daddy decided to stay home too. The twins said they were happy because they got to jump on the inflatable jump pad that Kevin's parents rented. Mommy took the twins out of the party early because she promised to visit Cousin Natalie. The twins didn't get to eat the cake.Joanne asked daddy what the numbers were in the songbook. I showed her that those were music notations. I made a strip of paper that overlaid on a musical keyboard, and marked the do-re-mi with 1 2 and 3 etc. I also showed Joanne how to follow the numbers on the songbook and press the corresponding numbered keys to make music. She got hooked immediately and practiced the "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" over and over again after I showed her couple of times. Joanne was very patient in practicing the notes with one finger. However, whenever she made a mistake, she said "Uh-Oh!" Jasmine mocked Joanne's mistakes and she sang "Uh-oh-uh-oh-uh-uh-oh" to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" as Joanne played the melody. Everyone got a good laugh including Joanne. She didn't find the mocking insulting. The twins agreed to perform their "Uh-oh" song in front of a camcorder too.
Monday, Oct 22, 2001 (4y+2m+16d)
Joanne's runny nose got worse. Mommy decided to let the twins skip school today so the bug would not spread to the other kids in school. Even though Jasmine was not sick, she got a day off too because mommy was too lazy to take the trip just for one kid. They stayed home all day.In the evening, Joanne lost her voice due to a sore throat. When daddy came home, she used hand gestures to communicate with daddy. Nevertheless, she was still smiling and played actively with Jasmine.
Tuesday, Oct 23, 2001 (4y+2m+17d)
Jasmine had an appointment with the eye doctor in the afternoon. Due to the time conflict with school, the twins skipped school again today. Besides, Joanne's runny nose had not recovered yet, so they would have skipped school anyway. The twins started to complain because they missed school after skipping two days.Jasmine was very cooperative at the doctor's office today. She answered all the questions during the eye test. The doctor said Jasmine vision was 20/20. She still needed to wear her glasses. Apparently, her cross-eyes were not totally corrected yet because the problem was visible occasionally.
Mommy asked the doctor to look at the sty on Joanne's eye because there was a lump of scar still remained after the swelling stopped almost two months ago. The doctor prescribed some ointment for her.
We dined out. Before we went to the restaurant, we stopped by the Sanrio store in the mall. As soon as we walked in, Jasmine immediately asked mommy, "我乖唔乖? (Am I obedient?)" Mommy looked to daddy. We chuckled because we all knew that the twins were fishing for candies again. Joanne didn't eat much because of her illness. Jasmine ate regularly. When we were back home, Joanne ate some raspberries. Joanne coughed, and perhaps her throat was irritated, she threw up some raspberry puree into the carpet. That left another stain on the already discolored carpet.
Wednesday, Oct 24, 2001 (4y+2m+18d)
Joanne threw up again after eating. Jasmine also coughed and complained about a slight sore throat. She told mommy that she did not want to spread the illness to her classmates. Given that she missed school yesterday, it seemed to be a genuine gesture of kindness instead of an excuse for skipping school. Mommy decided to let them stay home again. In the late afternoon, mommy took the twins to their ballet class in their Halloween costumes. Joanne dressed as Belle in Beauty and the Beast, and Jasmine as Ariel in Little Mermaid. They were looking forward to that. In fact, they had a dressed rehearsal at home just last night. Jasmine was very active in responding to the teacher. She raised her hand eagerly when teacher asked questions.
Daddy came home late. The twins were already in bed. Joanne was already asleep while Jasmine quietly staring at the ceiling. Jasmine was glad to give daddy a good night kiss.
Thursday, Oct 25, 2001 (4y+2m+19d)
Since the twins went to bed early last night, they got up at 5am in the morning. Mommy later found that the twins played out of bed without putting on extra clothes. Both twins' hands and feet were cold as ice when we got to them. Joanne's nose was running again because of the cold air in the morning. It made mommy very mad. She spent much time to take care of the twins to help them recover from their illness. But the twins didn't take care of themselves.Mommy punished them by making them sit on the "thinking chairs" inside the bathroom with no TV privilege for their favorite Blue's Clues show. The twins returned to school today. Even though the twins had not recovered fully, but being out of school for three days was a bit too much.
The twins fell asleep in their car seat right after school. That was expected when they got up at 5am.
Friday, Oct 26, 2001 (4y+2m+20d)
When the twins got up in the morning, Jasmine wanted to watch TV but Joanne insisted that she wanted to watch "Iron Giant". I was not sure what reminded her of that movie, they have not seen it for a while. Jasmine decided to stay upstairs and Joanne watched Iron Giant in the family room. The twins went to school as usual.
Saturday, Oct 27, 2001 (4y+2m+21d)
We took the twins to visit Cousin Natalie in the afternoon. Aunt Jun and Grandma Ling were there already. When we arrived, Aunt Jun and mommy went shopping. Daddy and grandma took the twins and Natalie to the park nearby. They spent some time playing on the swings and the jungle gym. When we returned to Natalie's home, the twins shared and played their Barbie's Nutcracker videotape. After we finished the movie, it was time we all went to the restaurant to attend great grandma's birthday dinner. On the way, the twins practiced the "happy birthday song" in the car. They had to ask us how to say great grandma in English because they had been calling her Chinese salutation all along. The twins had great appetite despite Joanne's still had a stuffy nose. They devoured everything that we put on their plates including each a big duck drumstick. The appetite indicated that they have recovered from their illness. In fact, this time around, Joanne took quite a long time to recover, she had the runny nose for over a week. Jasmine on the other hand, survived with just some minor coughing for a day or so.
After the twins were well fed, they left our table to stick to great grandma. They nagged great grandma to take them downstairs to see the wedding banquet in the other part of the restaurant. Since great grandma was the 'star' of the birthday dinner, daddy had to relieve her from time to time so that she could return to the table to finish her dinner. The twins were reticent initially, but before the end of dinner, the twins sang the birthday song to great grandma.
Sunday, Oct 28, 2001 (4y+2m+22d)
We had lunch in a restaurant. The twins had good appetite. The twins asked us who ordered the individual dishes, and then they thanked us individually for each of the delicious dishes we ordered. After lunch, we went to the Oakland Arena to watch Disney's On-Ice's Beauty and the Beast. We bought a copy of the official program book that came with a plastic rose. Jasmine said Joanne owns a Belle costume, so the rose belonged to Joanne. However, she wanted to hold on to the rose during the show because the rose would be Joanne's when they got home. Joanne fell for the stratagem initially, but then they fought for the rose from time to time.
There was a huge man sitting in front of us blocking the twins' view. When the show started, we put the twins on our laps so that they could see better. Joanne sat on mommy's lap and she watched the entire show quietly and intensely. Jasmine sat on daddy's lap and she turned around to ask questions every other second. "Why is this? Why is that? Where is Belle? Where is the beast?" She was a "problematic" girl.
We had a dinner appointment with Elizabeth. However, she called to cancel it. So we went to dinner with William and Lillian instead. We first went to their home. The twins had great time playing hide and seek with Lillian. When we went to the restaurant, Jasmine was particularly happy because she recognized the restaurant's name was also Jasmine. Jasmine told Joanne that she now had a restaurant while Joanne had a fabric store (JoAnn's fabrics). We stayed late in the restaurant chatting until almost all the tables were cleared. The twins danced with each other in the space among the tables.
Monday, Oct 29, 2001 (4y+2m+23d)
The twins went to school as usual. In the afternoon, Joanne played tic-tac-toe with mommy. She got impatient when she couldn't win. Then she told mommy to make this move and that move so that she could win the game. Mommy told Joanne that there was no difference from playing the game alone if mommy could not make her own moves.
Joanne's stuffy nose was almost all cleared. During the past week, the twins stayed very active despite the sickness.
When we were tucking in the twins at bedtime, Jasmine hid her head under the comforter. When I uncovered her, I found her sobbing. Once discovered, she broke into tears emotionally. I asked her why, she said that mommy gave her an angry look while tucking her in. Unlike Joanne, who is defiant, Jasmine is very sensitive to this type of small gestures.
Tuesday, Oct 30, 2001 (4y+2m+24d)
The twins went to school as usual.Jasmine reported to daddy that Joanne had a nosebleed at school. The teacher helped her clean up because mommy was not around.
Wednesday, Oct 31, 2001 (4y+2m+25d)
Joanne got up early in the morning. I asked her why. She said she got up early so that she could wear the costume early. Jasmine squirmed in bed when we checked on her. She was not too happy that Joanne woke her.Today is Halloween. The twins went to school in their Halloween costumes. Mommy brought a box of candies so that the twins could give them out in the Trick-or-Treat party at school. She also taped some video footage of their party at school. Ballet class was cancelled today.
Probably due to the concern of terrorist attacks, there were only three to four trick-or-treaters ringing our doorbell. For the same reason, the twins didn't go trick or treat except at school. The twins wanted to give out the candies to the visiting goblins. They didn't seem to be scared with us behind them.
Thursday, Nov 1, 2001 (4y+2m+26d)
The twins went to school as usual. At bedtime, Joanne is very particular in laying her dolls neatly on the pillow and then put a blanket (a wash cloth) over them. Jasmine just tosses the dolls around.
Joanne told me the name of Cassy's baby is spelled Jaminly.
Friday, Nov 2, 2001 (4y+2m+27d)
The twins went to school as usual.Mommy called daddy at work and Jasmine was on the phone. Before she handed the phone to Joanne, she told daddy that Joanne wanted a haircut. When Joanne picked up the phone, she cried emotionally. It turned out that Joanne wanted to ask daddy about the haircut in her own words. When Jasmine stole her thunder, she felt deprived of her right to ask the question. Mommy got a short haircut in the afternoon. Joanne wanted the same immediately. Mommy told her to get daddy's approval first.
After dinner, I talked to Joanne about the haircut she wanted. I told her that after the hair was cut short, she could no longer wear "Dorothy", or "Melody" or "Misty". After some thoughts, she decided to keep her long hair. Jasmine wanted to keep her long hair all along.
The twins named their hairstyle after the characters they saw on TV. "Dorothy" is two braids like Dorothy in Wizard of Oz. "Melody" is a ponytail like Melody in Little Mermaid 2. "Misty" is a lop-sided pigtail like Misty in Pokemon. "Jasmine" is a ponytail with two to three constrictions along the length of the tail.
Saturday, Nov 3, 2001 (4y+2m+28d)
We took the twins to Tilden Park in the Berkeley hills. They rode the Marry-Go-Round. Jasmine said she was scared of the Halloween decorations next to the carousel, so she didn't want to ride second round. Joanne used Jasmine's ticket for two extra rounds. Then we took the mini-train twice. We bought take-out lunch and visited Grandma Ling. Grandma had to work in the afternoon. So we decided to go home after lunch.
Joanne had not fully recovered from her sickness from last week. The exposure to the cold air this morning in the park made her worse.
Sunday, Nov 4, 2001 (4y+2m+29d)
We went to see the Disney's movie "Monsters Inc." after breakfast. They have been looking forward to the movie since they saw the TV commercial. I told them up front that the monsters in the movie were good guys and they were funny too. After the movie, they looked a little dazed. I asked the twins if they liked it. They said no. The reason? They were scared of the blue monster Sulley because of his roar in the middle of the movie. Besides, they complained that they were tired after watching the long movie. After watching Beauty and the Beast many times, they are still afraid of the Beast because of his roar.We bought take-out and had lunch at home. We stayed home for the rest of the day. Joanne started to cough a little after their afternoon nap. Apparently, yesterday's trip to the park took a heavy toll.
The first school day of the week is always sharing day. The kids were told to share their home phone numbers tomorrow. Mommy had been coaching the twins on the home phone number. They picked up the last four digits right away, but it took quite awhile before they remembered all ten digits. Joanne got it remembered first. When she challenged Jasmine, Jasmine brought out many excuses, such as "I'm busy now", "I need to pee pee" etc.
Monday, Nov 5, 2001 (4y+2m+30d)
The twins went to school as usual. It is the sharing day. Joanne successfully shared her home phone number with the class. Jasmine failed. But she said some other kids failed too. She didn't seem to feel bad about it at all.
Tuesday, Nov 6, 2001 (4y+3m)
The twins are 51 month old today. They went to school as usual.
