Venus Hum- Hummingbird

As The All-Music Guide says, "Nashville, TN might not be the first place for a dream-pop band to come together, but the birthplace of American music was a nice fit for Venus Hum." The trio- comprised of vocalist Annette Strean and multi-instrumentalists Kip Kubin and Tony Miracle- formed in 1999 after an upbringing that saw an interest for such new wave acts as The Cure and Kate Bush. They'd toiled for a couple of years in Nashville before MCA spotted them and gave them a deal, allowing for their major-label debut, "Big Beautiful Sky", set for release this month.

Of course, what a better way to get identified than with a electronica single that's as spacy and surreal as possible but also as simple as it could be. In writing 2003's best dance tune to date, Venus Hum combine a myriad of sounds- among them a "boingy" lead sound and various synth loops- into a very simple, straightforward sound. It's very mindboggling. Furthermore, Strean sings the song very well, adding her own airy, spacey element to the song while the lyrics guide you through her favourite colour, the "pink hummingbirds". A very memorable hit and one that will be remembered for years to come.
