The 1st Annual DG Awards

Well, like all years, 2002 had it's fair share of memorable moments. We've seen the death of the Pop Explosion, the emergence of "real" musicians (Michelle Branch, Avril Lavigne, Vanessa Carlton, etc.) as the dominant force in the music industry, the return of a legend (Bruce Springsteen) and a plethora of one-hit wonders in the mold of Carlton, The Calling, Tweet, Jimmy Eat World, Daniel Bedingfield, DJ Sammy, Iio, etc. It's been a strange year, to say the least, and, now we must say goodbye. However, before we go, I've decided to introduce the 1st Annual DG Awards, where the best of 2002 are highlighted. I've picked a list of nominees- based on singles with an artist represented once per category- and I'll be announcing the winners in January. Now, before I continue, there won't be a ceremony or any actual physical awards given out, just the winners posted on my Site (I'm just a University student, so funds are EXTREMELY limited). There are two awards- Album Of The Year and Artist Of The Year- which will be announced later and do not appear here- I still have albums to review for December and the Artist Of The Year will get a seperate feature and page- and the awards are simply based on singles. You'll also get a chance to provide your own input at the bottom of the page.

As for the actual awards, Michelle Branch with "All You Wanted", Eminem with "Lose Yourself", Disturbed with "Prayer", Pink with "Family Portrait", 1 Giant Leap with "Braided Hair" (featuring Speech & Neneh Cherry) and Avril Lavigne with "Complicated", lead the pack with four nods each. Branch receives nods in the "Alternative", "American Artist", "Artist (Single)" and "Song" awards, Eminem in "Rap", "American Artist", "Artist (Single)" and "Song", Disturbed in "Rock", "American Band", "Band" and "Song", Pink in "Pop", "American Artist", "Artist (Single)" and "Song", 1 Giant Leap in "Dance", "International Band", "Band" and "Song" and Lavigne in "Pop", "Canadian Artist", "Artist (Single)" and "New Artist". Since I'm Canadian and a lot of my work deals with Canadian radio, I have seperate categories for Canadians, but, even so, Canadians did have a large impact on the world at large- artists like Lavigne, Simple Plan and Nickelback all hit it big internationally and all scored well here, while The Rascalz and Ghetto Concept managed to sneak in strong showings of three nominamtions each. International artists also did well, as the UK's Daniel Bedingfield and 1 Giant Leap, Sweden's E-Type and Spain's DJ Sammy- among others- all scored nods here outside the International categories. It's a really diverse field and should make for some interesting results come January.

(NOTE: For the votes, please only vote for the genre(s) and award(s) that you care about. I want to ensure all the votes received are valid and that winners are not chosen due to pranks- I want real winners. You do not have to vote for each one if you do not want to, just the ones that you care about most.)
