| In the early 1990's, Texaco Stations were nearly gone from the northern Nevada landscape. There were one or two older stations remaining, with the shells of many closed station sitting in a few spots around town. In the mid 1990's, some of 1these stations began re-opening. They were opening as Jackson's Food Stores, after serious remodels (or maybe reconstructions, can't remember). Jacksons had apparantly started doing this in Idaho, re-opening closed Texaco Stations in markets that Texaco had nearly abandoned, and ended up doing this in market after market. In the meantime, some new Texacos were popping up in newer parts of town as franchise stations (not Jackson's). Within the past few years, most of those franchise Texacos have been taken over by Jackson for whatever reason. They never seemed to do very well in this market for whatever reason, be it location or price, but with a good convenience store program Jacksons was able to make things work. And they continued expanding their store network in other markets after this one, increasing it by nearly fourfold within a seven year period. On September 9,2003, as I was driving home, I noticed a Texaco Station in downtown Reno located at Center Street and 395 was in the process of converting to Shell. I had heard these conversions would take place sometime before 2004, and had meant to get around to taking pictures of these stations. Needless to say, the point came where I had to get these shots before the conversions were all finished and Texaco was gone from this area. The northern Nevada Texaco Stations are all controlled by Jackson Oil Co. Jackson is (was) the largest Texaco dealer/jobber on the west coast, with some kind of interest in nearly 500 stations. Jackson operates maybe 100 of the stations, while they serve as a jobber to others. All of their stations in this area are converting to Shell. However, Jackson is switching over to Chevron in a number of other areas, such as Idaho. Looks like Shell was unable to hold onto all of these stations. If anybody has any corrections or additions to this information, please e-mail me: newuser998 (at) hotmail (dot) com. Memories tend to be somewhat faded. |

| North Virginia at 9th Street, Reno, NV September 2003. This is the only Texaco in the area that does not display signage on the pump talkers and near the street touting their acceptance of the Shell Credit Card. It will be interesting to see what becomes of this station and if it brands Shell or not. |
