Historical Overview of
Converse Lions Club

IMPORTANT DATES IN OUR HISTORY

February 27, 1947

Cibolo Lions Club was chartered on February 27, 1947. It was sponsored by the New Braunfels Lions Club. Two of its members were Lions HH Gold and Ewald Pheil. The Cibolo Lions Club became inactive shortly after the beginning of World War II.

April 25, 1949
The Cibolo-Schertz-Converse Lions Club (CSC Lions Club) was organized on March 11, 1949 by Lion JC Welch. It was sponsored by the Seguin Lions Club. CSC Lions Club was chartered on April 25, 1949 with 35 paid members and 5 reinstated members. The charter meeting was held at the Outpost (just outside of Randolph Field) at 7:45 pm, Monday April 25, 1949. The Charter President was Lion John Sipple and the Charter Secretary was Lion CT Shelton. The CSC Lions Club met twice a month with meetings alternating between Cibolo, Schertz, and Converse. Meals were $1.00 and dues were $3.00 a month including meals.

In 1949, when CSC Lions Club was chartered, there were 8 districts in Texas: 2-T1, 2-T2. 2-E, 2-X, 2-A, 2-S1, 2-Se, and 2-C3. The District Governor was Lion Jack Wiech from Corpus Christi, Texas. The Zone Chairman was Lion ME Rust from New Braunfels. CSC Lions Club was part of District 2-A.

April 1963
CSC Lions Club was renamed to the Converse Lions Club in April of 1963. There were several reasons for the renaming. Texas was redistricted in 1959, splitting the area at Cibolo Creek. The cities of Cibolo, Schertz, and Universal city had grown large enough to support their own clubs. The members residing in the areas of Cibolo and Schertz were dropping out of the club. The remaining members, and interest, were primarily from the Converse area. It was determined that the Charter date and historical record of CSC Lions Club was to be retained by the Converse Lions Club. Lion HR Voges became President of the Converse Lions Club and Lion Eddie Zimmermann became Secretary/Treasurer.
