SOUTHERN SOIL
"The Dirt Project"
At the November, 2003, organizational meeting, the members voted to actively participate in Memorial Day, Veterans' Day and Confederate Memorial Day services as they are held in various cemeteries in  Colorado.  Soil, collected from each of the Confederate States, is taken to the Memorial service.  At each Confederate grave, the veteran's name, company, regiment and State are read aloud in honor, then a small handful of soil from the soldier's native State is sprinkled over his grave site.

The members also elected to take an active role in cleaning and tending to the Confederate graves in Colorado.  Tom Monaco,
The Greenwood Guards, is very dedicated and diligent in the search for Confederate graves in Colorado and has provided pictures, locations and directions to grave sites in Fremont County in order to assist us in this endeavor.  Mr. Monaco addressed the group in February, 2005.  He described the Colorado Confederate interment project - an effort to locate the graves of Confederate soldiers buried in Colorado and place a CSA Veteran's marker on those who do not already have one.  Tom also demonstrated the use of divining rods in locating grave sites and invited us to participate in future grave searches.
