Llantwit Major
The people of Llantwit Major live in a place which has been occupied for over 3,000 years from the bronze age people to the Romans.
The oldest buildings that can be seen now were built by the Normans. The old part of the village is a maze of narrow lanes and streets, the other half with a modern shopping mall.
The best place for the visitor to start is the Tourist information office at the town hall (pictured left)
The Town Hall rebuilt in the 16th century
Pictured right is the Old Swan Inn which I believe dates back to the 13th century and has a fascinating history. It is said that the pub was once a mint. This dates from the civil war when the owner, Edward Maddocks, struck brass tokens for his workers.
The Old Swan was popular with American visitors to the Vale of Glamorgan  before the 1939- 1945 war when nearby St Donats castle (now the Atlantic college) was owned by William Randolph Hearst.

Pictured left is St Illtyd's church, described by John Wesley in 1777 as "the most beautiful and spacious church in Wales" Christ has been woprshipped here for about 1500 yrs, since Illtyd came and established a church, monastery, and school. It became the burial place of local kings. The wall paintings, and medieval altar (in the Lady chapel) and unusual memorial stones should not be missed.
