| Scholarships |
| Music scholarships are highly competitive. As a rule, approximately one student from each studio each year receives a 5 year scholarship ranging between $800 and $1600 per year ($4000-$8000 scholarship). At times there may be as many as 2 trobmone students who receive a scholarship in an audition year. Since there may be between 14 and 18 trombonists auditioning for the trombone studio each year the competition for scholarships is normally strong. Scholarships will be based on your performance, including scales and sight reading; and will also be based upon how well you do on the entrance theory and audiation test, as well as your academic and performing success in high school. Studio acceptance: Normally, in order to maintain a studio of 16-18 trombonists, I am able to accept between 4 and 6 students per year. Trombone Student Success: We are very proud of our students who have graduated from CMU. During the past three years alone 11 trombone BME majors have gone on to obtain jobs teaching in Michigan public schools. Two graduate students are now teaching at community colleges, one BME student is now attending the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music as a graduate performance major and performing with the West Virginia Symphony, and one is currently performing professionally with 'Blast'. One recent graduate is now performing in the Army Band program. Trombone graduates have been accepted at schools such as- Cleveland Institute of Music Esther Boyer School of Music at Temple Universilty University of New Mexico Cincinnati Conservatory of Music Michigan StateUniversity. During the past four years seven different students have performed regularly or as substitutes with the Midland Symphony Orchestra and the West Shore Orchestra. Eight different students have gigged with area big bands and/or jazz combos. Most students have participated in chamber music ensembles that have participated in our Chamber Outreach program. It is our job to prepare students for success whether they pursue a career in teaching or graduate studies. We are proud of our comprehensive program that places equal improtance upon academis and performance. In the ten years that I have been teaching at CMU we have a 100% placement rate with all trombone BM or BME graduates. |
