IF there is one young star who shows real promise in the field of serious acting, it's Claudine Barretto. A familiar face on television because of the top-rating soap opera "Saan Ka Man Naroroon," Barretto has proved that she is the next drama actress to watch out for.

Her roles in the daily soap provide a triple challenge since she has to breathe life into the lead triplets, Rosemary, Rosario and Rosenda.

We recently observed the taping of the series at White Plains and discovered that what Barretto is required to do is no easy task. She has to change not only the way she looks, but to shift personalities at the snap of a finger.

"It's still hard," she says, "but I have somehow gotten used to it. Sometimes, I have to be reminded who among the three sisters I'm supposed to be next, kasi nga nakakalito kung minsan."

The harder part not just for Barretto but for all the cast members, is when each sequence has to be shot twice or thrice if the scene calls for two or all the triplets to be onscreen at the same time. When this happens, Barretto's "doubles" have to come in and act out their parts.

During our immersion on the set, we saw how Barretto shifted from being devious to being sweet and being manhandled with the same intensity. She says it helps to be working with fine actors like Cherry Pie Picache, Eric Quizon, Joel Torre and Gladys Reyes, and director Wenn Deramas and assistant director Randolph Ranay.

"We tape almost three times a week and that can be taxing. Lately, we even tape during weekends since I was given permission to leave for a holiday," Barretto says. She's set to fly to the States and Canada for a well-deserved break, after which she will come back and work even harder because she will be promoting her latest movie under Star Cinema, Rory Quintos' "Anak," wherein she co-stars with Vilma Santos, Cherry Pie Picache and Amy Austria.

"Anak," the story of an OFW mom in Hong Kong and her relationship with her children, will have its premieres in Hong Kong's Cinemetro Theater on May 7, Manila (May 8) and Lipa City (May 9).

"It's a film I'm really proud of. You're gonna hate me and feel for me at the same time. I hope this will be the turning point in my career," Barretto says.
