Buyers Guide
Before buying your portable fire extinguisher, consult the Buyers' Guide issued by the South African Bureau of Standards. the Guide is obtainable free of charge from the SABS or from any consumer organization. Many different fire extinguishers are sold in South Africa. A large number of these fail to meet the safety and quality standards laid down by the SABS. To ensure the safety of your family and property, you are strongly advised to buy extinguishers that are reliable, effective and of good quality. i.e. those that bear the SABS mark of quality or have the specific approval of the SABS. PLEASE NOTE that, you, as the owner of a hand-held fire extinguisher, will, under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Act 85 of 1993, be held responsible for such equipment. The SABS mark of quality may be awarded to any manufactured products. Apart from the SABS mark bearing the fire-fighting appliances such as, amongst others, the CO2 type, certain imported extinguishers that bear the American "UL" or British "FOC" stamps of approval are considered suitable for use, but approval by the SABS is now implemented by law for all types of fire extinguishers and is now a must as from 6 October 1996
