Oviedo - The Gamonal

We leave Oviedo by N-630. This road is excellent for cycling since it is a road little journeyed and with ample borders. After about 4 kilometers of ups and downs a drop of two kilometers begins and it leads us to the power station of Soto de Ribera. After a level section and immediately after crossing a tunnel we turned to the right towards Riosa by the AS-231. This road is enough narrow for the traffic that it supports so it combienes to have well-taken care of. From here the road begins to raise slightly. After crossing La Foz, we arrived at La Vega where a deviation to the right is taken where the ascent begins. The 6 first kilometers do not emphasize by their hardness (on 7%) and when arriving at a recreational area there is a false zone of level. After crossing this section it is where the impressive hardness of this ascent begins, that in the following six and a half kilometers has an average unevenness of more of 13%, is here where we have the first wall of 19% during a zone of curves in horseshoe. Nevertheless the hardest part is at one and a half kilometer to the top with an impressive incline that gets to reach 22% during 300 meters that become interminable. It is in this part of the ascent we find with impressive views that arrive, in days cleared, until the coast, to almost 50 kilometers of distance. The road is well, it was asphalted in his final section months ago, and presents revolts that contribute to increase the spectacularity of the ascent. After crowning, the road follows some hundreds of meters to die in a precious lowest part of valley surrounded by cabin where in summer there are a lot of asturian race of valleys cows. In summary can be affirmed that this ascent, in addition to an impressive hardness it presents spectacular landscapes and views.
In order to return there is no more remedy than to undo the way done, until at least Las Segadas, where a train that goes to Oviedo, can be caught , to avoid the last six kilometers that become hard enough after the great effort made. It is necessary to have much precaution in the drop since it is frankly dangerous with curves very closed and with slopes very pronounced.
