The Angliru satege of Vuelta 2000 was agin a great success. Although there were only a dozen of installed tents on Sunday, the official figures are 100.000 fans along the ascent, I think this number is a bit exagerated. The climatologic forecasts were bad but it did not rain, although there was fog along almost all the ascent. This Asturian mount was final of stage of the Vuelta of Spain for the second time. Tuesday September the 12th was the great day, this event will not repeat next year since the organization of the Vuelta has confirmed that the Angliru will not be raised in the next editing, nevertheless everything indicates that it will be present in later editings until convertising in the emblem of the Spanish race. The city council of Riosa has improved the road for this editing according to requests of Unipublic. The main modification is the increase of wide of the highway in the Cueña les Cabres, the hardest part of the ascent with a 22%, without diminishing its slope.
From Sunday at 15 hours road RI-2 will be cut from Viapara to the top of the Angliu. Tuesday, day of the race, roads RI-2 and MO-1, Santa Eulalia - Busloñe will be cut, to the 7 hours. Parkings in Viapara and Covarriella will be arranged. Also, in the surroundings of Viapará it is installed the encamped zone, as well as the Hospital of the Red Cross, the control center of the Civil Guard and the power station of operations of the transmitters. Also it has been installed in the top the carps help to the cyclists to rest.
Everyone wanted to take the escape in the first kilomers, but was the untiring Roscioli who took off and it went in solitaire. In Luanco the leader Heras received spirits, with placards and paintings on the roas, of his friends of the childhood, when he was neighbour and he formed as cycling.it was after Avilés when the foreigners Lombardi, Miceli, Brozyna, Trenti, Petacchi, Huser, Brochard, Tafi and Hruska and the Spaniards Guerricagoitia and Rafa Diaz were united to Roscioli. Kelme, defending the leadership of Heras, paced the squad to try to neutralize them and that the leader could also look for the stage triumph. But the numerous group of head collaborated well and after maintaining a persecution of 30 kilometers "kelmes" gave up before bursting and, in a while, the advantage of 2 minutes turned into 10 minutes in Padrún and 12 in Santo Emiliano. That caused that the flight had all the options to arrive because in the escape there were strong and climbing men like Simoni, Brozyna, Hruska, Brochard, Guerricagoitia or Rafa Diaz. Among so many, some could win specially when arriving at Riosa with more than 7 minutes of advantage. So Simoni, an exceptional climber winner of a montanious stage in Giro and who finished third in theoveral, did not fail to take advantage of the occasion and at 10 to go kilometers he went in solitaire. The Italian of the Lampre, with a powerful rithm, gave an exhibition of how to climb and prevailed in the goal, with 2,19 on another winner in Italy: Hruska (Vitalicio).
The other battle, the one to gain the Vuelta, began when the director of the Kelme, Vicente Belda, commanding to his runners to mark a infernal rate, once passed Sotrondio, in the beginning of the strong ascent to the Colladiella. At 60 kilometers to the squad was broken and only the best ones, among them the Asturian Coke Uría, Marcelino García, Ricardo Valdés and Chechu Rubiera, were in the leading group of thrty runners. Kelme could not tell on Óscar Sevilla, who had his bad day, and the Kelme sacrificed one was Chechu Rubiera who had a selection in the final part of the ascent, then in the drop and in the level slope and until Pola de Lena and later made another exhibition in the ascent to the Soterraña, where third of the overal, Igor González de Galdeano, offed-hook and left the Vuelta before beginning the ascent to the Angliru. The group has only a dozen of chosen runners in the top of the Soterraña and in the drop he followed in head until La Vega de Riosa. But the Gijonian still had capacity to do ahead 3.5 kilometers of the Angliru, where to only went whith him Casero, Rumsas, Laiseka, Tonkov and his companions Heras and Escartín. This last one carried out an attack of 2 kilometers until passing Viapará where Casero had already difficulties. The counterattack of Tonkov and Heras in Cuesta them Cabanes, of the 21 percent of unevenness dia Caseo left touch. It lelt 6.5 kilometers for the goal when the leader took the initiative to go forwards to try to remove to the maximum advantage to Caserto. The bejarano went with great force and wt 3 kilometers ho go he had 2'09" to Casero. The thousands of fans, under a dense fog, vibrated with the spectacle, mainly in the Cueña them Cabres, with unevenness of the 23.5 percent. There Heras was given thoroughly because he knew that he gambled the Vuelta and was his stellar moment among the spirits of the fans. Meanwhile Casero a high cyclist as began to accuse the effort and Rumsa and Escartín left him. He underwent its great calvario and until the goal, no matter how muchhe fought, he got to lose 3,41 with respect to hos greatest rival Heras. This, also accused the effort but he had obtained more advantage of which he had thought and left sentenced the Vuelta. He could not gain the stage because Simoni maintained the distance to him in almost the three final kilometers. But he took a giant step to gain the Vuelta in Madrid. By not taking place an accident, Heras, in final podium, will be accompanied by Casero and the Russian Tonkov, who was very recovered. Chechu Rubiera, after his recital of leading the squad 50 kilometers, in which he sacrificed his options in the general, where he lost three positions passing from tenth positiona to 13th, so that his companion Heras won, arrived at 8'44 " demonstrating his great professionalism, because this year leaves the Kelme and he could have reserved to play a better role at personal level. The result of the rest of the Asturian ones was: Valdés, 40 to 13'04 "; Uría, the 42 to 13'33 " and Marcelino García, 9 to 14'41 ".

Heras made the final ascent in 41 minutes (18 kph), from Viapara to the top, 6.5 Km, he spent about 27 minutes (14.5 kph) and in the hardest kilometer, from 3 to 2 kilometers to go, five and a half minutes (11kph). Simoni spent 6 minutes in this kilometer (10 kph) and 30 minutes since Viapará (13 kph). This figures shown the difficultie of the ascent. The classification of the stage was as it follows:
