Auburn Ringlet is a Cherafir-based nivik, or Hrnic knarr, specializing in trade with Evael. Operating between Melderyn's main port and Ulfshaven, she trades the luxury goods of Lythia for the Sindarin and Jarin craftwork that are in high demand on the continent. Auburn Ringlet was built by the same shipwright that laid and commissioned Jonby yet, in spite of identical hull designs and size, the two ships are quite different.
Length: 36' | Beam: 12' | Draft: 3' 6" | Freeboard: 2' 6" | Gross Burthen: 26 tons |
Auburn Ringlet's owner-captain, a transplanted Karejian merchant, prefers the comfort of a private cabin and had a small one designed into the ship. It and the other crew accomodations and lockers account for nearly half of the ship's burthen, leaving just over 13 tons for cargo.

The ship's officers (Captain and Pilot) normally do not receive wages but instead share in the ship's profits. But any share of profits that works out to less than the daily-wage rate will be considered as a loss of income. So, in calculating the ship's operating costs, we will include their daily wage rate in our calculations of costs.

These costs represent the expense of delivering a 13-ton cargo to the specified port -- i.e. the ship proceeds directly to the wharf upon arrival and unloads its full cargo onto the docks. The same figures apply to the case of a ship already at the docks taking on a full cargo and then departing. In the case of a ship arriving, unloading its cargo, taking on new cargo, and then departing, double the amounts shown for pilotage and cargo handling. The indicated costs reflect the discounts applicable to the ship in its port of registry. They do not include the costs incurred by delay in arranging repairs or finding buyers and new cargo (which will reflect in anchorage costs and additional pilotage fees).
Use the information above and an estimate of the passage time between ports (click here: ) to estimate the costs of the passage. Please note that these figures do not include time spent in port waiting for repairs, or the time involved in arranging the sale or acquisition of cargo.
Already alongside the docks at Cherafir, Auburn Ringlet takes aboard 13 tons of olives, rice, tea, saffron, peppercorns, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, mace, sesame, almonds, sugar, limes, lemons, myrrh, bdellum, nard, sponges, spirits, and rare hardwoods delivered by the recently arrived Karejian Larun. The ship passes her inspection and pays the obligatory tariffs and sets sail for Evael. After an 11-day passage, Auburn Ringlet arrives at Ulfshaven and delivers her cargo to the docks where the merchandise is negotiated away in a barter exchange. The actual cost of transportation totals 1,181 pence ( (72d/day x 11days) + 105.5d + 283d = 1180.5d). With an assumed profit margin of 30% to the ship's owners, the ship's captain will charge 1,687 pence for the passage. (1180.5d / 0.7 = 1,686.43d; note the actual price charged will have been negotiated in advance, based on the captain's estimation of the costs involved.)
The prorated cost to the mercantyler of carrying one ton of cargo from Cherafir to Ulfshaven aboard Auburn Ringlet is about 130 pence.
The straight-line distance between Cherafir and Ulfshaven is 135 leagues (27 hexes); the cost per hex for one ton of cargo is about 4.82d.
As the ship sails, the distance between Cherafir and Ulfshaven is 200 leagues (40 hexes); the cost per hex for one ton of cargo is 3.25d.
After taking aboard 13-tons (volume) of furniture, glassware, pewterware, and musical instuments, Auburn Ringlet hoists sail and steers for home. She arrives there only seven days later to unload her cargo on the docks where it is quickly sold to Karejian merchants making the return journey to Lythia. The actual cost of transportation totals 749 pence ( (72d/day x 7days) + 139d + 105.5d = 748.5d; note that since Auburn Ringlet already paid for wharfage at Ulfshaven, it is not included again here). With an assumed profit margin of 30% to the ship's owners, the ship's captain will charge 1,070 pence for the passage. (748.5d / 0.7 = 1069.29d; note the actual price charged will have been negotiated in advance, based on the captain's estimation of the costs involved.)
The prorated cost to the mercantyler of carrying one ton of cargo from Ulfshaven to Cherafir aboard Auburn Ringlet is about 83 pence.
The straight-line distance between Ulfshaven and Cherafir is 135 leagues (27 hexes); the cost per hex for one ton of cargo is about 3.07d.
As the ship sails, the distance between Ulfshaven and Cherafir is 200 leagues (40 hexes); the cost per hex for one ton of cargo is about 2.08d.
