Foreword
This discography places in chronological order all public, commercially-released recordings on which Scott LaFaro performed. Information, for the most part, has been compiled from 'liner notes' printed on the container (the jacket) accompanying long-play [LP] vinyl recordings, as well as from the program booklets and inserts that accompany Compact Disc [CD] recordings.
I have, however, included quotations from other publications to make clearer a recording date, identities of performers, instrumentation, and related issues. This is a beginning. Much remains to be done. Locating some of the original vinyl LPs is one task. Verifying dates, identities, etc., is another. Many recording companies, more focused on getting a product to market, neglected to include with their released recordings detailed information about the recordings themselves. As a result, simple questions about recording dates, performers, instrumentation, program content (compositions, tunes, alternate takes), initial release dates, re-issue dates, compilations, technical recording data all become a puzzling maze after half a century.
The order herein is first by recording date, rather than by release or publication date:
Original releases by year recorded: 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, with 1956 and 1957 together.
Re-issued recordings are grouped as follows: 1961-1979; 1980-1989; 1990-1999, 2000--.
If a recording was not released near the actual recording date, but much later (in some cases decades later) I have placed it in chronological order by date of recording. For example, West Coast Days, recorded in 1958, appears early on in the list although it was first released in 1992 in CD format. This arrangement more clearly represents the actual chronology of the recordings.
One recording that LaFaro made with pianist Paul Bley in Los Angeles has never been released as far as I have been able to determine and therefore is not included. Some other recordings that LaFaro may have performed on (e.g., Benny Goodman, Barney Kessel, and Frank Sinatra) have not yet been verified and therefore are not included.
Also, I have included recordings released in countries other than the United States when I've found them. Such releases, however, have a secondary role in this discography at this time.
Where I have listed 'OCLC control numbers' , note that such numbers refer to the Online Computer Library Center bibliographic database, headquartered in Dublin, OH. This is a librarian's tool for the most part, but with a librarian's help, a researcher may find such data useful.
Again, this is a beginning. Revisions will be made as new information comes to light. Digital images of all LP and CD album covers have been added whenever I have the item in hand.
Suggestions for improvement are welcomed.
Please look also at the Scott LaFaro discography published on the Internet by the Jazz Discography Project (JDP) at < www.jazzdisco.org > compiled by Kohji 'Shaolin' Matsubayashi and his colleagues. The JDP has several entries ranging from Julian 'Cannonball' Adderley to Mal Waldron, including entries for Chet Baker, Ornette Coleman, Bill Evans, Hampton Hawes, and Booker Little with whom LaFaro recorded. JDP exhibits its discographical information by Catalog -- Album and Discography -- Session indices. The entry for Scott LaFaro will be found at < http://www.jazzdisco.org/lafaro/ >.
