Note: Joan Crane in her Guy Davenport: A Descriptive Bibliography, notes (p. 109) that four stories in JVSB comprise the second part of a trilogy begun with "Apples and Pears: Het Erewhonisch Schetsboek:  Messidor -- Vendémiaire 1981" in Apples and Pears (1984).  The stories making up the second part of the trilogy are: "The Meadow", "The Bicycle Rider", "The Jules Verne Steam Balloon", and "The Ringdove Sign".  All were published initially in magazines and journals, then gathered in The Jules Verne Steam Balloon (1987). The trilogy concludes with "Wo es war, soll ich werden" first published in The Drummer of the Eleventh North Devonshire Fusiliers (1990).
