"When sixteen of his fragments appeared in Poetry early in 1963, it was widely supposed that 'Archilochos' was the invention of a new and ingenious American poet . . . Sic semper poetis. The book in our hands has two authors, Archilochos and Guy Davenport, and a third coauthor, Chronos: devouring Time." (Kenner)

Translation based on:  Archiloque:  Fragments, Texte établi par François Lasserre, traduit et commenté par André Bonnard.   Paris: Collection des Universités de France, publiée sous le patronage de l'Association Guillaume Budé, 1958.  "Since I first read Archilochos in J. M. Edmonds' Elegy and Iambus, Vol. II, Harvard University Press, 1931 (reprint 1954), the scholar will find slight traces of that edition in my translation . . ."

Acknowledgements in 'Translator's Note':  ". . . [T]he impulse to translate Archilochos comes as much from the barracks of the XVIII Airborne Corps and of the 756th Heavy Artillery [as from the classroom], and I know not what tone Robert Gallway's Matchless added to Version I or Steven Diamant's Norton and Seefab javelin to Version II, but the clarity and irony of Mary Ann Mott's imagination I know well and acknowledge strenuously.  To Cedric Whitman and Hugh Kenner this translation owes its existence, for without their encouragement I would not have undertaken the job at all.  And fortune has been good about joining my walks around Haverford with those of the scholar Arnold Post, so that we could talk Archilochos under dogwood and oak.  Guy Davenport, Haverford College, 1963"
