Sonic Chronology:
The
Fight For Freedom
(Sonic the
Hedgehog #s 0 – 50)
Note: Between the
lack of references in the comic to what the current year is, and the
confusing nature of the Sega Data Files, dating events after the
beginning of the series is somewhat difficult, and the events of
just before issue 0 to a week before issue 72 is particularly
difficult. As such, there is more conjecture than usual in this
section.
3233
*The
Origin of the DownUnda Freedom Fighters.
--Sonic 103-
"Myth Taken Identity" Part 1. Date is speculation.
*Antoine
falls in love with a girl named Tatiana, but she ends up going out
with Sonic. Soon after this, she moves away.
-- Sonic
137: “One Part Ooh-La-La, Two Parts Treachery”,
flashback-within-a-flashback. Said to be early in the days of the
Freedom Fighters, but it is obviously after Sonic has gotten old
enough to be interested in girls. The main flashback and the outer
framework of the story are full of anachronisms, but the inner
flashback seems fine, and explains a comment Antoine made in SSS7:
“Parallel Paradigm”.
3234
Note:
A strict reading of the “Sega Data Files” would delay the
change-over to 3234 until between issues 9 and 11.
*Charmy's
origin
--Knuckles 14, sometime prior to the “Chaotix”
special.
* Rotor and Sally devise a
pair of boots for Sally to wear which would contain
various sensors and might be able to prevent roboticization. Rotor
begins working on them.
-- Months before mini-series issue 1.
* Rotor
begins work on a bathysphere (a mini-sub).
-- Months
before mini-series issue 1.
*Princess Sally
falls in a vat of chemicals while on a mission
in Robotropolis. Her hair turns blonde, and
her fur orange.
--Knuckles 29, shortly before “Don't Cry For
Me, Mobius”
*Robotnik
bulldozes several acres of the Great Forest
in an attempt to find Knothole Village.
--No more than a
few weeks before “Don't Cry For Me, Mobius”
*Sonic
ends up being chased by Robotnik, who is in
his mini hover-ship.
--Just prior to the beginning of “Don't
Cry For Me, Mobius”
*Sonic the Hedgehog (Mini-Series) #0:
“Don't Cry For Me, Mobius”
Sonic escapes Robotnik, and returns
to Knothole. Antoine reveals that there is a leak in the roof of
Freedom Fighter Headquarters. The Freedom Fighters investigate and
learn that it is a result of the bulldozing
Robotnik did recently. They are attacked by Robotnik, but Sonic
defeats him with a Power Ring. The Freedom Fighters plant some
saplings in the damage area.
“Oh
no – Robo! No Mo' Mobo!” -- Listed elsewhere, and non-continuity
to boot.
Non
Continuity One-pagers: “The Royal Family Tree of Mobius”,
“Sonic's Six Speed Settings”, “Robotnik's Badniks”, “Sneaker
Peak”
* After washing Robotnik's chemicals out of her fur and hair, Sally's fur becomes pink and her hair black. Sally refuses to say what exactly caused this second color change.
--
Knuckles 29, sometime between issue 0 and mini-series issue 1. It is
implied several times in the early comics that her hair color change
was dye, but Sally refuses to discuss it. The second fur color change was shown in Knuckles 29, but not explained.
*
Rotor finishes Sally's special boots.
--Not long before
mini-series issue 1.
* Rotor
finishes his bathysphere.
-- Not long before mini-series issue
1.
*
Princess Sally arranges a meeting with Robotnik to negotiate the
return of her father. She writes a Royal Proclamation to inform the
Freedom Fighters of this. She then heads out to meet with a
Buzzbomber who will take her to the arranged meeting site.
--Just
before mini-series issue 1.

“Run,
Sally, Run!”
“Silent Running”
“Something Fishy”
“Equal Time”
“Ground Rule Double”
“Photo Album”
*Sonic the Hedgehog (Mini-Series) #2
Non
Continuity: “A Crowning Achievement”
--
Note: This story features a different mystical crown of the Acorn
family than the one seen in later issues, as well as the revelation
of the location of Knothole to Robotnik. As such, it can only be
considered non-continuity.
Also non-continuity: “Top 10 Reasons to Buy Sonic
Comics”
One-pagers: “Fin Fans”, “Photo Finish”
*Sonic
goes into battle with a group of Crabmeats, who chase him to the edge
of a cliff.
-- Just prior to mini-series issue 3.
*Sonic the Hedgehog (Mini-Series) #3
“Sonic Flashback”
Sonic falls off a cliff, and is knocked
unconscious. He wakes up in time to defeat
the Crabmeats after him.
-- The bulk of this story is Sonic's
dream. The dream is portrayed as possibly a flashback, but in the
post issue 15 continuity it is clearly just a product of Sonic's
imagination.
“Why
Ask Spy”
Sonic dons a robot costume to spy on Robotnik. While
he's there, he discovers his Uncle Chuck
and his dog Muttski, both roboticized. He manages to blow up a
Buzzbomber factory before his cover is blown.
-- Sonic's
robot costume consisted of... a toothed leg-trap, and a pair of red
swirly contact lenses. But then, the only visible indication of Uncle
Chuck's robotic nature was his own swirly eyes! ...However, if we
assume that there was more to the costume, and that the art does not
portray “reality”, the story can still be rectified with
continuity.
3235
Note:
Placement of the year change-over is arbitrary;
it just has to be before issue 11 if “You Are What You Eat” is to
be on Sonic's 15th birthday. On the other hand, a strict
reading of the “Sega Data Files” would have that be his 14th
birthday, and would delay the change-over to 3235 until 2 days before
issue 50.
* Sonic goes “Super” for
the first time.
--Sometime prior to Sonic 4. The circumstances
of this first transformation are unknown. Date is arbitrary.
*Sonic the Hedgehog #1
“Meet
Me At the Corner of Hedgehog and Vine”
R&D Swatbot #693
presents Robotnik with a mechanical “plant”, Krudzu. Robotnik
seeds the Great Forest with it, hoping to either kill the Freedom
Fighters or force them out into the open. However, the Krudzu turns
out to not be water-proof, and is destroyed by a thunderstorm.
--
Battle Royal's “the Map” would suggest the Swatbot merely
rediscovered Krudzu, rather than inventing it as portrayed in this
story. However, as “the Map” left blatant loose-ends that should
have been tied up long ago (such as when Antoine was reunited with
his father), it is possible “the Map” is non-continuity.
“You
Bet My Life!”
Sonic visits the Casino Night Zone, and battles
Orbinaut for the first time.
One-pagers: “I'd Like to Thank”, “Keep Looking Up”, “Fast Food”
*Robotnik completes his
latest Badniks: Scratch, Grounder, and Coconuts. Scratch
is appointed leader of the “Super Special Sonic Search and Smash
Squad”.
-- Not long before Sonic issue 2.
*Sonic the Hedgehog #2
“Triple
Trouble”
Scratch, Grounder, and Coconuts attempt to defeat Sonic
and Tails for the first time, but fail.
“In
the Beginning”
When the Sega engineers got the signals that
inspired the Sonic games, Mobius Prime wasn't the only Zone whose
Sonic they observed...
“Vertigo
A Go Go”
Sonic enters a bizarre Zone,
and meets Horizont Al and Verti Cal.
One-pagers: “Foiled Again”, “Two-Timer”
“All
the Mail's About Tails!”
Sonic and Tails read some Sonic Grams
letters about Tails.
* Robotnik discovers his
pantry infested with flying ants. Soon after this, he begins work
on... “The Bomb”!
-- Prior to Sonic issue 3's “The Bomb
Bugs Me”.
* Sonic the Hedgehog #3
“The Bomb Bugs Me”
Can the Freedom Fighters stop Robotnik from
using... “The Bomb”? ...And when Rotor disguises himself as
Robotnik, the question arises, is Rotor Robotnik, or is Robotnik
Rotor?
One-pagers: “Tails' Fairy Tales”, “Double Speak”;
“Paper
Trail”: An article in the Knothole Inquisitor criticizes Sally's
change from blonde to brunette.
“Rabbot Deployment”
When the Freedom Fighters learn that
Robotnik is making inroads into Southern Mobius, Sonic and Rotor head
down to stop him. Down south, Sonic rescues a rabbit just as she's
being roboticized, leaving her a “Rabbot”. Bunnie Rabbot joins
the Freedom Fighters.
“Robotnik's Rules”
* Sonic the Hedgehog #4
“Lizard
of Odd”
When a robotization goes awry, Universalimander
threatens Mobius. The planet's only hope is for Sonic to become Super
Sonic again to stop him.
-- Sonic seems to know exactly
how to become Super, so this could not have been his first time, even
though it was the first time shown.
“Tails' Little Tale”
-- Explicitly states it is later on in the day of the issue's first adventure ("Lizard of Odd").

--
Later in the day after “You Are What You Eat”. A strict reading

birthday better fits all other evidence.

Seeing as how Sally is still drawn and colored in the pre-SatAM style, this story is going to have anachronisms no matter when you place it, so I choose to ignore the image of Nicole, thus allowing this story to remain placed where it was published.

“What's the Big Idea?”
“Animal Magnetism”
* The color changes produced
by Robotnik's chemicals finally wash out of Sally's fur and
hair. The color of her hair after this may be the result of re-dyeing her hair.
--
Prior to Sonic 16. In Sonic 24, Sally and Anti-Sally both claimed the
other was dyeing her hair, and while this was clearly meant as an
insult, it still may have been true.
*
The Freedom Fighters receive an advertisement that mentions free
chili-dogs. Sonic drags Sally, Tails, Rotor, and Antoine to Sleepy
Hollow, where the event is to take place. However, there is nothing
there. While they're waiting around to see if this changes, they all
mysteriously fall asleep. When they wake up and there is still no
sign of anyone, they head back to Knothole.
-- Prior to
Sonic 16. The Freedom Fighters were put to sleep by gas Robotnik
pumped into the clearing. Robotnik then brought them to Robotropolis,
where he plugged them into a Virtual Reality machine. When they woke
up, they were in fact in the Virtual Reality, but did not realize
this.
*
“January, 3235”: The Freedom Fighters defeat Robotnik – or so
they think.
-- Just prior to Sonic 16. The Freedom
Fighters are unaware they are in Virtual Reality, and it was not the
real Robotnik they defeated. The Wedding seen in the story was said
to be in June, “six months” after the defeat of “Robotnik”,
so the Freedom Fighters must have thought it to be January. It is
likely, however, that some time had already passed in VR, so we can't
assume it to be January in the outside world.
* Sonic the Hedgehog #16
“Sonic Under Glass”
The Freedom Fighters celebrate their
victory over Robotnik. Six months later, Sonic and Sally prepare to
get married, when suddenly Antoine replaces Sonic at the altar. As
things continue to get stranger, Sonic meets with what appears to be
Uncle Chuck, and learns that the Freedom Fighters (except Bunnie) are
in a Virtual Reality program concocted by
Robotnik. Sonic takes control of the simulation, and frees everyone.

*
Robotnik heads to Skoal Island to track down a wayward creation of
his, King Gong. The Freedom Fighters are puzzled when several weeks
pass without any sign of Robotnik.
-- Robotnik leaves
Robotropolis “several weeks” prior to Sonic 17: “Gorilla
Warfare”.
* Sonic the Hedgehog #17: “Gorilla Warfare” or “The Apes of Wrath”
* The “Knothole Village
Players” (A group of actors from Knothole Village, including
several Freedom Fighters) decide to stage a production of the play
“Our Wedding”. Planning for it begins, including casting and
eventually rehearsals.
-- Some time
prior to Sonic 18: “Wedding Bell Blues!”; probably several weeks
or more.

“Cry of the Wolf”
“Growing Pains” (Part
One: Sonic 28 / Part Two: Sonic 29) / Sonic 113 – “Cry of the
Wolf” / Tail Mini-Series: “Southern Crossover” One-Three.
--“Cry of the Wolf” occurs after Dulcy joined the team,
meaning it can't be long before issue 29, and it must be prior to
issue 46. As meeting other Freedom Fighter groups was seen as a big
thing in both “Cry of the Wolf” and the Tails mini-series, I feel
they should be around the same time; and since Tails was not in “Cry
of the Wolf”, that story could have even taken place during Tails'
adventures away from Knothole during “Growing Pains” or the Tails
Mini-Series. I have arbitrarily decided to place the bulk of “Cry
of the Wolf” during “Growing Pains”, and have the “important
meeting” Sally mentioned she and Sonic would be going to at the
beginning of the Tails Mini-Series be the meeting seen at the very
end of “Cry of the Wolf”.
*Sonic 29
“Steel
Belted Sally”
-- As “Growing Pains” continues directly
from the main story of issues 27-28, and there doesn't seem to be
much time between “Growing Pains” and the Tails Mini-Series, I
have chosen to place “Steel Belted Sally” after the Tails
Mini-Series.
Off Panel: Adventures of Scott, Paul, and Freddy
* Dulcy is discovered by the
dragons. For her leaving the caves, her black ring is replaced with a
power ring, inhibiting her fire-power; and she is exiled.
--
Sonic 155: “Price of Flame”. Some time after Sonic 29. One
editor's note implies it's right after 29, another claims it's
sometime after “Brave New World” - but that contradicts the
implied length of time she's been exiled. It is also uncertain
whether she was returning to the mountain occasionally,
or whether dragons actually left the mountain to track her down.
*Sonic 30
“The
Return of Uncle Chuck”
Sir Charles regains his free will.
Robotnik and Sonic are temporarily trapped in “the Void”, and
Snivley threatens to destroy the world accidentally when he takes
over for Robotnik.
“Who
Keeps Stealing My Chaos Emeralds?”
When some of Robotnik's Chaos
Emeralds are stolen by an “Anteater”, Robotnik leave Coconuts in
charge of protecting the rest. However, Coconuts' elaborate traps
don't quite perform as expected.
It seems unlikely Robotnik
would store Chaos Emeralds rather than using them, or that Bunnie
would use them as jewelry. As such, this
story is likely non-continuity.
Off Panel: Adventures of Scott, Paul, and Freddy.
