Hurricane Rita hits Lake Charles 3 weeks after Katrina

On Sep 24, 2005 Hurricane Rita, a Category 5 hurricane rolled directly into Lake Charles. Mandatory evacuations had cleared out the residents and emergency crews had learned a lot about preparation after the Katrina fiasco in New Orleans weeks earlier. Family who were already caring for New Orleans refugees were uprooted and moved again. Fortunately, no Louisiana family were injured although many houses were damaged, including a huge tree through the roof of Johan and Allies place and and another through the roof of John and Heathers new house.

From the Baton Rouge Advocate front page Sep 29, 2005:
Chris Ieyoub, left, and Gerry Obluda work on Wednesday atop the roof of a Lake Charles house pierced in several places by the toppling of a large oak tree during Hurricane Rita. Owner Steve Cochran and a small crew of friends worked on the tree for several hours, cutting branches off before pulling the huge trunk off the house with a strap, rope and truck
