Richard Shindell - Reunion Hill (1997)

Although he has two earlier albums available, this album was my introduction to Richard Shindell as an artist, and what an introduction it is! At a time when so many songwriters seem satsfied with churning out one dimensional, pop oriented, bubble gum for the teen market, Shindell has created a rich tapestry, and one of the most compelling albums of the year!

Reunion Hill is more than just a collection of songs. It is a series of stories that speak to the heart. They speak of faith and hope, the helplessness of love lost, and the certainty of age.

The title track has to be the highlight of this album. It is the kind of song that can touch your soul, and bring a tear to the most cynical eye. Although it doesn't actually say so in the song, the lyric's and feel of the music indicate it is set during the American Civil War. The effect is incredible.

Beyond the title track, this album is jam packed with captivating songs. It indicates that Richard Shindell is one of the best emerging singer songwriters of the 90's, and will be a force to recon with.
