Terry Draper - Civil War (2004)

If the name sounds familiar, Terry Draper is probably best known as the drummer of the enigmatic Canadian band Klaatu, but his talents have evolved far beyond the drum kit. Since the demise of Klaatu in the early 80's, Draper has expanded his horizons. He was already an excellent singer/songwriter, but through hard work, and dedication, he now plays multiple instruments, and is a world class engineer and producer.

Case in point, his latest release on Bullseye Records, "CIVIL WAR...AND OTHER LOVE SONGS"

Described as a "loosely conceptual album", Civil War is a collection of songs spanning three decades, and drawn from Drapers life long facination with the American Civil War. The conceptual matterial on this album, the mix of sound effects and music, is nothing short of brilliant. Thrown into the mix is a hodge podge of songs that don't necessarilly support the concept, but doesn't derail it either.

The production on this album is nothing short of amazing! A personal highlight for me is the song "All Over Morocco". Inspired by a trip Draper took in 1978, this song was originally intended for Klaatu, but ended up being shelved. Now, quarter of a century later, this wonderfully quirky tune, steeped in Arabic influence, has found a home on this album.

CIVIL WAR...AND OTHER LOVE SONGS is an excellent example of one mans vision and talent. Check it out, and you'll see what I mean!
