Why did I join CHMR?

Although I was a student of Memorial University for less than 1 year, I have been a card carrying member of CHMR for over 25 years.
I was not what you would call a Model Student! In fact, less than a week into my first semester, I did a test as part of my Psych class, and found I had a "Grade 7 Reading Level". This didn't sit well, so on Thursday, January 20th., 1977 I paid a visit to my my student councelor, Mr. Gill. (I can't remember his first name)
He made a monumental, and inspired suggestion. He told me that the best way for me to improve my reading skills quickly, would be to read alot under circumstances that supported improvement. He suggested that I join CHMR (The University's New Radio Station), and read the news on air. It would help me improve my reading skills, and give me an activity to help me feel more at home.
That after noon I called the station and spoke with George Smith (Goo-Haw) who told me there was a board class the next day. So, at 9:00 am Friday, January 21st., 1977, I walked through the doors of CHMR, on the third floor of the Thompson Student Center, for the first time. Back then, it was 860 am, CHMR, broadcasting closed circuit to the Thompson Student Center, and Carrier Current to Paton College.
The first board class was at 1:00 that day, which I attended. There I met the DJ that was on that night (I'm sorry but I can't remember his name) who told me that night would be his last show, and would I like to co-host with him. That way, If I liked the slot, I could take over for him the next week.
So that evening I walked into the Master Control room for the first time, and co-hosted a show. It was great! No one was listening, there were no requests, but He introduced me to a world of music I never knew existed. By the time the show was over, I was hooked! The next day I did another board class, and took my board test that Tuesday, which I passed, and was on the air that Friday Night for my first show.
With in 8 months, I had dropped out of University, but I have remained a member of CHMR ever since!
