What The Hell Is "Cosmic Debris"?

(Look for Links while you read!)

At 11:00 am, on Sunday, September 14th., 1997, 'Cosmic Debris' hit the airways on 93.5 CHMR-FM. I took the name from the Frank Zappa classic Cosmik Debris. (Is that a real Poncho, or is that a Sears Poncho?)

At the outset, 'Cosmic Debris' was a Concept show... that means that each week we took a concept and explored it musically. The Series Premier was on "Origins" and featured music like the original House of the Rising Sun (1933) by Woody Guthrie, The origin of Klaatu (Featuring Silly Boys by Klaatu) and the song from which the show got it's name.

The Concept idea ran for just over 3 years, by which time the show went through a couple of hundred themes like "Sex", "Religion", "Drugs" and "War". The show on "War" recieved rave reviews locally, and has since become an annual fixture at a Local Royal Canadian Legion. (They have a tape of the show that they play every year on their anniversary)

In the Fall of 1998, the show moved from Sunday Mornings to Wednesday evenings at 8:00 pm (Prime Time), then moved again in the spring of 1999, to Monday Nights at 7:00, which is where we stand today.

Cosmic Debris has also spawned two of my other shows on CHMR-fm. The Songwriters was actually a conceptual series of Cosmic Debris episodes before it became a show on its own. As well, The Sunday Morning Hangover Cure came about after Cosmic Debris went Prime Time. There was a void to fill on Sunday Mornings, so I filled it... but those are other stories you can check out in this website.

The current format of Cosmic Debris, Featuring "The Weird, The Wild and The Wacky from the World Wide Web", came about at the end of the Spring 2000 season. We were going into summer, and I had just come out of a couple of difficult years personally. Another season of researching and writing Concepts just wasn't appealing. I needed a break from deep, and often, somber thought, and came up with the idea of giving Cosmic Debris a comedic theme for the summer. I had fully intended to go back to concept shows in the fall, but by September, people were calling and telling me to "keep it as it is". Cosmic Debris... as we know it, was born...

Then, in the fall of 2002, I added a couple of little segments to spice up the show and add a little variety. The Today In History segemnt tooks at a great Moment in Rock History, and features a song associated with it. The Monday Night Epic is a Long Epic Classic Rock Song, seven and a half minutes long, or longer.

So... every Monday night at 7:00 pm, it's your weekly fix of Sex, Drugs and Rock-n-Roll on the Radio! Look beyond Popular Culture and into the Cosmic Debris only on 93.5 CHMR - FM, or on the web, Via MP3 Stream or Real Audio at www.mun.ca/chmr
