TORONTO ARGONAUTS HISTORY

 

 

 TEAM HISTORICAL HI-LITES:

 

 1872

Harry O'Brien gathered crews of oarsmen, decked them out in Oxford and Cambridge blues, and formed the Argonaut Rowing Club.

 1873

First Argonaut football club was started under the guidance of head coach H.T. Glazebrook. Argonauts play one game in 1873 against the University of Toronto, and two against the Hamilton Tigers.

 1883

Ontario Rugby Football Union was formed. Under the direction of coach A.H. Campbell, the Argonauts defeat U of T 23-4, and Ottawa City 9-7, to win the championship.

 1895-97

Argonauts bowed out of competition after a dispute over professionalism.

 1909?

Argos begin play in VARSITY STADIUM.

 1914

Argonauts win their first Grey Cup.

 Dec 3, 1921

With 9,550 fans on hand at Toronto's Varsity Stadium, the Argonauts won the first-ever East-West Grey Cup, defeating the Edmonton Eskimos 23-0.

 1947

Argonauts win their third-consecutive Grey Cup, defeating the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 10-9.

 1950

Argonauts triumph in the infamous "Mud Bowl" game, defeating the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 13-0.

 1959

Argos move to newly-built EXHIBITION STADIUM.

 1983

Argos win their first Grey Cup in 31 years, defeating the BC Lions 18-17.

 1989

Argonauts move to SKYDOME.

 1997

Argos win their 14th Grey Cup November 16, 1997 in Edmonton, defeating Saskatchewan 47-23.

 1999

New York Insurance magnate Sherwood Schwarz purchases the Argos.

 2000

Michael "Pinball" Clemons becomes Head Coach of the Argos.

 2002

Argos promote Pinball to President of Football Operations, hiring Gary Etcheverry as Head Coach. Midway through the season Pinball takes over as Head Coach; leads team to Eastern Division Final.

 2003

Argos celebrate their 130th consecutive year, making them the oldest continuous professional sports franchise in North America!

 July 29, 2003

The CFL takes control of the Argonauts.

 Oct 24, 2003

Argos defeat the Calgary Stampeders 13-12, qualifying for post-season.

 Nov 5, 2003

David Cynamon & Howard Sokolowski purchase the Argos from the league.

 Nov 21, 2004

Argos win their 15th Grey Cup, defeating the BC Lions 27-19.  Damon Allen wins his third Grey Cup MVP award.
