Synopsis:
(from The
CFL in America)
| Baltimore
was the most succesful of the American teams, setting a record their first
season for most wins by a first-year team. Owner Jim Speros' approach
was simple: he knew the Canadian game was different from the American version
and knew to get coaches & players with CFL experience. He selected
a coach with extensive CFL experience (Don Matthews). Matthews then
brought in experienced players like QB Tracy Ham, RB Mike Pringle (the
CFL's leading rusher in 1994), LB O.J. Brigance, DT Jearld Bayliss, and
DE Elfrid Payton. They appeared in the Grey Cup in both seasons they
existed. They won it in 1995, becoming the only American CFL team
to win a Grey Cup. |
| For awhile,
they were the horse with no name. They started out unofficially as
the Baltimore CFL Colts, until the NFL sued them over the use of the name
Colts. They were eventually succesful in their suit, so Baltimore
was known as the Baltimore CFL's for a time. They then became known
as the Stallions. After the 1995 season, the NFL Cleveland Browns
moved to Baltimore. Speros hoped to enlist the support of local government
& business to keep the Stallions in Baltimore, but was unsuccessful
and elected to move the team to Montreal, after the CFL decided to disband
all the other American teams. |
